  • Genre Analysis of a Pakistani Clothing Brand Website
PUTAJ – Humanities and Social Sciences Vol. 26, No.1 (January-June), 2019 Exploring Structure and Content: Genre Analysis of a Pakistani Clothing Brand Website Fizza Farrukh*& Wasima Shehzad Abstract Analyzing the genre of websites helps in understanding the minimum requirements expected out of that particular virtual space. The idea of understanding the structure and content of a well-established e-commerce website is particularly important for those who are relatively novice in the field. For this purpose, the current study investigates how a popular Pakistani clothing brand has constructed its website by keeping its potential users in forefront. The theoretical framework comprises of genre-based approaches of Swales (1990) and Bhatia (2014). Moreover, the investigation outlines how genre-based studies help in understanding the meaning-making processes prevalent in the minds of the creators of that genre. The study also compares and contrasts the studied website with other similar websites to provide an overall comprehension of this sub-genre in particular. Keywords: Female education; economic development; women empowerment; Pakistan Introduction Formulating a discourse community for the users, websites become viable mediums to disseminate information (Mohd & Ali, 2015). Beyond the fulfillment of this basic functionality, websites’ genres will vary with variation in their targeted audience (Emigh & Herring, 2005). For example, Miller and Shepherd (2004) explored blog websites in their study, and argued that this genre fulfills rhetorical needs of the users, by providing a virtual space to them for writing their thoughts. The genres of websites of business companies designated for e-commerce (i.e. online stores) have been investigated by a limited number of studies (Mohd & Ali, 2015).

  • Transnational Islamic Networks
Volume 92 Number 880 December 2010 Transnational Islamic networks Imtiaz Gul Imtiaz Gul is the Executive Director of the Centre for Research and Security Studies,Islamabad, and has been covering security and terrorism-related issues in the South/Central Asian region for more than two decades. Abstract Besides a surge in terrorist activities, events following the 11 September terrorist attack on the United States have raised a new challenge for the world: the emergence of transnational Islamic networks, predominantly influenced by organizations such as Ikhwan al Muslimeen (the Muslim Brotherhood) and Al Qaeda, which are helping to spread a particular religious ideology across the globe and are also having an impact on pre-existing groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This article gives an overview of the role of Islamist networks and their influence, drawn from Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood, in South and South-west Asia and the Afghanistan– Pakistan region in particular. It also explains how local like-minded outfits have used Al Qaeda’s anti-Western jargon to recruit foot soldiers and enlist support within their society, besides serving as financial conduits for the radical Wahabite/Salafi reformists. Traditional Islam in South and South-west Asia Islam came to the Indian subcontinent in the eighth century with the Arab con- quest of Sindh (now the fourth province of Pakistan in the south). In the ensuing decades, however, besides struggles and battles for political domination among kings and sultans of the region, Sufis and saints played a major role in influencing traditional Islam in South (and West) Asia.

Shotguns and Munaqqabes along the Arabian Sea | norient.com 5 Oct 2021 01:51:14 Shotguns and Munaqqabes along the Arabian Sea by Mark LeVine Maybe it was the 13-hour time difference. Maybe it was arriving at 6 a.m., after two nearly sleepless nights in coach, at an airport that had recently been attacked by terrorists, where – at least at the arrival lounge – it seemed that hardly anyone spoke a language I could understand. Or the fact that from all the news reports, conversations with friends, and even the tension on the plane, it was clear that Pakistan was entering another one of those violent periods that have defined its short history. Landing in Islamabad, I was literally on the opposite side of the Earth, as my five year old son Alessandro pointed out to me a few days before I left when he traced the longitudinal line from California over the North Pole and down (roughly) to Pakistan. Even Iraq, a far more violent and depressing place today than Pakistan – as of early 2008 – somehow felt more familiar to me. At least I could speak Arabic. Pakistan was definitely not in my cultural and historical comfort zone. Yet the Himalayas were only a couple of hours away; for all I knew, the Buddha had walked not too far from where I was standing. And quite probably, so had Osama bin Laden. https://norient.com/stories/pakistanrock Page 1 of 25 Shotguns and Munaqqabes along the Arabian Sea | norient.com 5 Oct 2021 01:51:14 I had come to Pakistan on the trail of a friend and kindred spirit, Salman Ahmed of the Pakistani supergroup Junoon.

Not only are their careers mentally grueling and physically demanding but they also have an added risk of high investment and low returns. The rock genre has struggled to achieve its righteous place in the country whereas folk, qawalli, pop, bhangra and Bollywood music experienced skyrocketing popularity.

One of Frito Lays biggest brands, Lays Potato Chips, is a major competitor in the Pakistani Snack- foods market. However in 2009, Lays faced a major controversy when it was targeted with a campaign saying that an ingredient found in the manufacturing is Haram (prohibited for Muslims). This claim proved to be disastrous from Lays as it meant a loss in the consumer base as well as a dent onto the Brand's image amongst its wide base of Muslim consumers.
