Our Shabbos in Shebreshin As Ashkenazim — Jews of Northern/Eastern European ances- try — we called it Shabbos; for the Mediterranean Sephardim, the word was Shabbat. It was our Sabbath, and it started on Fridays — to be exact, about six o’clock every Friday morning. I would hear my mother get out of bed and prepare herself for the big event of baking the bread that was to last all week. One day, as a young child, I too got up, announcing to my mother that I would go with her. She didn’t resist very much. She pulled down my nightshirt, took my hand, and led me in my bare feet across the few yards to my grandfather’s house. Grandma was already awake and moving about. The kitchen was brightly lit, the large brick stove and oven were fired up, and there were piles of sifted flour on the table. Some dough was already rising. The kitchen was adjacent to my grandparents’ bedroom, and the door was seldom closed. Zaida saw me coming in, smiled, and beckoned me to come join him in his bed. He put me on his chest. I buried my face in his beard. It smelled of spices. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the warmth. We watched the two women prepare the baking — sifting and kneading. First, the white flour for the twisted Shabbos challah and other white-dough baked goods; later, the dark rye OUR SHABBOS IN SHEBRESHIN 127 to bake in round loaves, sprinkled on top with caraway seeds. When fresh, the bread was soft and delicious. -

This illustration is from Jacobus de Teramo’s Das Buch Belial (Augsburg 1473). 2 WRESTLING WITH DEMONS Introduction From Scripture to Talmud and Midrash through medieval Jewish writings, we find mention of dangerous and evil beings. Scripture refers to them as Azazel and se’irim; later writings refer to them as sheidim, ruchot and mazikim. All these are different varieties (or different names) of demons. Belief in demons (and the associated belief in witches, magic and occult phenomena) was widespread in the ancient world, and the terror that it caused is unimaginable to us.1 But in the civilized world today there is virtually nobody who still believes in them. The transition from a global approach of belief to one of disbelief began with Aristotle, gained a little more traction in the early medieval period, and finally concretized in the eighteenth century. -

Yet that title (“son of David”) is found only in the synoptic gospels in association with Jesus’ healing and demonic exorcisms. While healing is a clear part of the messianic profile in the Old Testament, exorcising demons is not. What predisposed first century Jews to the idea that the Davidic messiah would cast out demons? I’m excited about this Valentine’s Special. MSH: Oh boy, Valentine’s Special, I didn’t even think about it in those terms. Well, today we do want to talk about exorcism as part of the messianic profile. If this sets your heart to fluttering, I guess we did our job. But this is a topic that has come up a couple of times, just sort of blowing by it, just mentioning it. In times of increasing polarization of our collective discourse, this program seeks to double down on its effort to bring a variety of voices and opinions to the table, and be a space where participants are exposed to new and different ways of thinking, particularly about Judaism and themselves. LimmudFest is the first content program in our Retreat Center season. Reviewed by Zelda Kahan Newman (Lehman College) Published on H-Judaic (September, 2011) Commissioned by Jason Kalman The Supernatural Reconsidered English-readers unfamiliar with premodern Yiddish literature will find in this book four different genres of Yiddish stories about the supernatural. Professor Dauber compares and contrasts these tales, giving the reader a sense of their individuality and complexity. However, the title of this book is deceptively narrow, while its subtitle is deceptively broad. Although this book does indeed deal with a tale of a she-demon in a man’s bedroom, that is only one of the four primary texts examined in this book. And while the early modern era (the sixteenth to the seventeenth century) is indeed the temporal locus of this book, there is no attempt here to examine all of the Yiddish literature of this era. Only tales of the supernatural are examined here. The introductory chapter of this book is followed by a second chapter that contains a comparative case study of witches and demons in the works of Christopher Marlowe and Shakespeare. After these chapters, the book begins in earnest to examine: 1) a book of fables; 2) the story of a she-demon and a man; 3) dybbuk tales; and 4) the chivalric romance called “Tale of Briyo and Zimro.” In his introduction, Dauber tells us that the supernatural element shared by the four stories suggests that all four genres are open to similar theoretical considerations. -
