Scripture refers to them as Azazel and se’irim; later writings refer to them as sheidim, ruchot and mazikim. All these are different varieties (or different names) of demons. Belief in demons (and the associated belief in witches, magic and occult phenomena) was widespread in the ancient world, and the terror that it caused is unimaginable to us.1 But in the civilized world today there is virtually nobody who still believes in them. The transition from a global approach of belief to one of disbelief began with Aristotle, gained a little more traction in the early medieval period, and finally concretized in the eighteenth century. -

Yet that title (“son of David”) is found only in the synoptic gospels in association with Jesus’ healing and demonic exorcisms. While healing is a clear part of the messianic profile in the Old Testament, exorcising demons is not. What predisposed first century Jews to the idea that the Davidic messiah would cast out demons? Reviewed by Zelda Kahan Newman (Lehman College) Published on H-Judaic (September, 2011) Commissioned by Jason Kalman The Supernatural Reconsidered English-readers unfamiliar with premodern Yiddish literature will find in this book four different genres of Yiddish stories about the supernatural. Professor Dauber compares and contrasts these tales, giving the reader a sense of their individuality and complexity. However, the title of this book is deceptively narrow, while its subtitle is deceptively broad. Although this book does indeed deal with a tale of a she-demon in a man’s bedroom, that is only one of the four primary texts examined in this book. And while the early modern era (the sixteenth to the seventeenth century) is indeed the temporal locus of this book, there is no attempt here to examine all of the Yiddish literature of this era. Only tales of the supernatural are examined here. The introductory chapter of this book is followed by a second chapter that contains a comparative case study of witches and demons in the works of Christopher Marlowe and Shakespeare. After these chapters, the book begins in earnest to examine: 1) a book of fables; 2) the story of a she-demon and a man; 3) dybbuk tales; and 4) the chivalric romance called “Tale of Briyo and Zimro.” In his introduction, Dauber tells us that the supernatural element shared by the four stories suggests that all four genres are open to similar theoretical considerations. -

271 Covering Mirrors in the Shivah Home By: ZVI RON One of the signature symbols of Jewish mourning is the covering of mirrors in the house where mourners sit shivah. When my father Shlomo Zalman Ron z”l recently passed away and we were prepar- ing the house, his caretaker, Melvin Manalo, a native of the Philip- pines, remarked that in his homeland they also cover mirrors in a house of mourning. When I mentioned this to a neighbor, he won- dered if this is a vestige of crypto-Judaism in the Philippines. A short time later I ran into a native of Sri Lanka working locally and when I asked him about mourning customs in his homeland he re- plied that in Sri Lanka they also cover mirrors in a house of mourn- ing. These exchanges spurred me to investigate the origin of this popular Jewish mourning custom. Ancient mirrors were made out of polished metal, like the cop- per mirrors donated to make the Altar in the Tabernacle (Ex. 38:8). Glass mirrors were introduced in 14th century Venice; however, the images were blurred and distorted. The technology to make perfect- ly reflective hand and full-length mirrors was developed only in the late 1600s.1 During all this time there is no mention of covering mirrors as a custom of Jewish mourning. The earliest reference to this custom is found in the writings of R. Moses Sofer, the Hatam Sofer (1762–1839). A Tale of Two Sisters. The Image of Eve in the Early Rabbinic Literature and its Influence on the Portrayal of Lilith in the Alphabet of Ben Sira Abstract: The purposes of this paper are (1) to outline the early Jewish traditions concerning Lilith so as to provide the backdrop for (2) the reconstruction of the main elements of her image in the Alphabet of Ben Sira [ABS] which contains the most elaborate variant of the Lilith-myth. The latter in turn will be (3) confronted with the early rabbinic traditions concerning Eve so as (4) to present the role of Lilith in unburdening Eve of her problematic past on the one hand and (5) to acknowledge the role of Eve in elevating Lilith to the position of the “prototypical” Jewish femme fatale. The conclusions are that (1) the image of Lilith in the ABS draws from the traditions arose around Eve in the early rabbinic literature; (2) the main difference lies in the fact that Lilith is portrayed as far more defined and unambiguous; (3) one of the functions of Lilith in the ABS is to promote the positive image of Eve.
