Johnston, Ph.D. Date completed: July 1994 Problem This project emerged out of a sincere desire to find answers to the physical, emotional, and spiritual bondage that plagued Christians. After many years of pastoral ministry, I was convinced that something was not complete in my ministry to these troubled people. Traditional counseling methods I had been taught were ineffective in breaking these bondages. An honest soul search, and a new look at the ministry of Jesus and the apostles exposed this one area of neglect in my ministry. As an Evangelical I believed in the biblical account of evil spirits, but was not really aware of their hindrances in the lives of believers. These perplexing problems among my parishioners forced me into a counseling deliverance ministry. Method Needing to determine the biblical basis of a ministry of deliverance in this present age, I investigated all scriptural references to evil spirit or demons, trying to determine their affects upon God's people. The significance of the blessings and curses of the Bible was studied in an effort to understand their affects, if any, upon succeeding generations. Pertinent modern literature on demonology and the occult were reviewed, and relevant terms were clarified. The primary focus of the study centered on five selected case studies of individuals I have counseled who seemed to give evidence of these Satanic bondages. The sessions were recorded, and medical data were documented where available. Results and Conclusions Satan and his evil spirits do hinder Christians today with various degrees of bondage due to personal and generational sins and covenants. The data for this conclusion is found in the case studies, the biblical data and the present-day experiences of other counselors. I could not have carried on without them. vi CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Justification for the Project In a thirty-year pastoral ministry, I have observed that there is a severe lack of practical knowledge in the detection of, deliverance from, and post-pastoral care for parishioners who may suffer Satanic influences and bondages in their lives. Very few, if any, ministerial respondents that I surveyed in the traditional evangelical ranks claimed any formal education in this subject. Many charismatic and Pentecostal pastors have testified to an awareness of the problem.

    Forging Faithful Followers — Acts 8:26-40 John Mitchell Introduction. The book of Acts stands as the sole historical book in the New Testament. As we know, found in these pages is the early history of the Church as it strove to do exactly as Jesus desired, to take the gospel message from Jerusalem, to all Judea, to Samaria, and ultimately to the end of the earth. Consistent with this spread of the gospel, Acts is accurately viewed as the book of conversions — Acts being the only place in the New Testament where actual conversion experiences are recorded. The passage before us is rightly viewed as containing the conversion of an Ethiopian Eunuch and is worthy of detailed study as to what was said and done in bringing this man to the obedience of the faith. Fortunately, there is more here than a simple conversion account; we also find solid principles for the building of productive Christian lives. The theme of this year’s symposium is “ACTS in Action” — mining the treasures of this great historical narrative in practical and productive ways. The narrative of Philip and his interaction with the Ethiopian Eunuch models timeless principles for us to be faithful followers of Christ.     It Comes in Many Forms: Islamic Art from the Collection, Oct. 23, 2020 - Dec. 18, 2021 This exhibition presents textiles, decorative arts, and works on paper that show the breadth of Islamic artistic production and the diversity of Muslim cultures. Throughout the world for nearly 1,400 years, Islam’s creative expressions have taken many forms—as artworks, functional objects and tools, decoration, fashion, and critique. From a medieval Persian ewer to contemporary clothing, these objects explore migration, diasporas, and exchange. What makes an object Islamic? Does the artist need to be a practicing Muslim? Is being Muslim a religious expression or a cultural one? Do makers need to be from a predominantly Muslim country? Does the subject matter need to include traditionally Islamic motifs? These objects, a majority of which have never been exhibited before, suggest the difficulty of defining arts from a transnational religious viewpoint. These exhibition labels add honorifics whenever important figures in Islam are mentioned. SWT is an acronym for subhanahu wa-ta'ala (glorious and exalted is he), a respectful phrase used after every mention of Allah (God). SAW is an acronym for salallahu alayhi wa-sallam (may the blessings and the peace of Allah be upon him), used for the Prophet Muhammad, the founder and last messenger of Islam. AS is an acronym for alayhi as-sallam (peace be upon him), and is used for all other prophets before him.     2 Race, Class, and Residence in the Chicago Ummah Ethnic Muslim Spaces and American Muslim Discourses The racial landscape of a city influences how close American Muslims have come to fulfilling the ummah ideals there. When I arrived in Chicago in the spring of 2002 to research Muslims in the city, two things stood out. One was the city’s diversity. Chicago was a nexus of global flows. Filled with people from all over the world—Bosnians, Mexicans, Nigerians, and Vietnamese—Chicago fit my idea of a global village. But alongside these global flows were major inequalities, particularly in the racially segregated housing, the second thing that stood out. Indeed, Chicago has always been known for its racist residential patterns and ethnic neighborhoods. “Germans settled on the North Side, Irish on the South Side, Jews on the West Side, Bohemians and Poles on the Near Southwest Side.”1 In the nineteenth century, European immigrants carved out ethnic lines across the city which, with the rise of black migration to Chicago in the 1920s, soon had viciously racist and economically devastating consequences. Fear and widespread propaganda created large-scale white resistance to African Americans. As whites maneuvered to keep blacks out of their neighborhoods and fled from the ones where blacks did settle, African Americans were confined to and concentrated in the South Side’s Black Belt. Business owners then moved from this expanding black area and invested their resources and profits elsewhere. As the community’s resources declined and the population grew, neighborhoods in the Black Belt steadily turned into overcrowded slums.2 Outside the South Side’s Black Belt, a flourishing metropolis took form, setting the stage for Chicago to become a major international city.

    1 PHILIP & THE ETHIOPIAN: BEING TEACHABLE AND AVAILABLE ACTS 8:4-8, 26-40 Global missions expert Paul Borthwick shared a story that reminds us how God's mission can be from anyone anywhere at any time. He stopped at a McDonald's in Cambridge, Massachusetts and noticed a young man named Peter working the counter. He’d been a part of Borthwick’s young adult ministry at church. He’d just graduated from Harvard University with a master's degree. Borthwick asked Peter, "What are you doing here?” knowing Harvard master's degree students don't usually aspire to work the counter at McDonald's. "Well," Peter explained, "I graduated in May but I went four months without finding a job, so I said to myself, 'I need some income to pay bills.' So this is where I've ended up—at least for now." Borthwick replied, "Sorry to hear that. It must be hard.” But Peter cut me off. "No. Don't be sorry. God has me here. This place is giving me awesome opportunities to share my faith. I'm on a shift that includes a Buddhist guy from Sri Lanka, a Muslim fellow from Lebanon, a Hindu lady from India, and a fellow Christian from El Salvador. It's awesome. I get to be a global missionary to my coworkers while asking 'would you like fries with that?'" Both Peter and Borthwick laughed. Peter found himself in a setting he never would have chosen as part of his long-term plan, but his mindset of living as a person sent by God shaped the way he looked at his circumstances and at the people around him.
