During my first six months as President, I have been fortunate to connect with many of you and I look forward to more opportunities to engage you in our work here at Blakefield. With alumni receptions in Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., we were able to gather many of you to celebrate our Loyola pride. We have additional regional events coming in 2014, so please stay tuned. As you reflect on your relationship with Loyola, I urge you to ponder what a Jesuit education means to you. Having completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Jesuit universities (Saint Peter’s and Fordham), I draw from my experience as a student, teacher and administrator to articulate the difference that a Jesuit education can make. If nothing else, Jesuit institutions are adaptive, cognizant of the evolving needs of their constituents. At Loyola Blakefield, we strive to ensure that our Dons receive a formative experience, one that engages and challenges the mind, body and spirit. Formation however does not end at graduation, nor is it limited to students and alumni. We’re delighted to see our parents (past and present), friends, Trustees and their families finding ways to engage in their own spiritual journeys and commitments to being Men and Women for Others. As our proud partner, we continue to ask you for your support and it will be needed as we continue to be great care-takers of our mission. However, I want you to think about what Loyola can do for you — whether it’s “At Loyola Blakefield, opportunities for spiritual development, Ignatian service encounters, career we strive to ensure networking for alumni or other meaningful ways for you to connect with our mission. that our Dons We recently honored the legacy of Coach Jerry Savage with the dedication receive a formative of Jerry Savage Court. Day President 2 Message from the Principal Dear Friends: On January 6th, 12 days after Christmas, the Church celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany. The word “epiphany” comes from the Greek word epiphani, which means “a visit by God to earth.” Church tradition holds that the Magi experienced such an epiphany when they traveled great distances and endured great hardships to worship the newborn King. As a Jesuit school, inspired by the life of St. Ignatius and his first companions, we are called, like the Magi, to have our own epiphanies here at school every day. Christ is present here in the hundreds of unseen acts of charity and generosity between students and faculty, in the selfless ways our students and our staff serve the poor, in the ways so many friends and alumni have been generous with their time, talent and treasure and in the way our students care for each other on retreats and here at school. All of this generosity is a reflection of the Holy Spirit active in the life of our school. When you spend any time on this campus and look around, it’s hard not to feel like one of the Magi, overwhelmed by the goodness and divinity of God present in humanity. I read a quote from Nelson Henderson the other day, which simply and clearly sums up what is happening here: “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” All of our work here, from academics to forensics, from dramatics to athletics is an investment in an unknowable future. Every teacher, business office “The true meaning of staff person, coach, board member, club moderator, custodian and our life is to plant trees, alumni and benefactors have made a commitment to Loyola Blakefield and the future of our young men. For this we are all grateful. under whose shade Thank you all for choosing to plant your trees here! you do not expect to sit.” – Nelson Henderson John E.
