Guggenheim and AMO / Rem Koolhaas Announce Research Project Culminating in February 2020 Exhibition Countryside: Future of the World to Examine Radical Changes Transforming the Nonurban Landscape (NEW YORK, NY—November 29, 2017)—The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, architect and urbanist Rem Koolhaas, and AMO, the think tank of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), will collaborate on a project exploring radical changes in the countryside, the vast nonurban areas of Earth. The project extends work underway by AMO / Koolhaas and students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and will culminate in a rotunda exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in February 2020. Organized by Guggenheim Curator of Architecture and Digital Initiatives Troy Conrad Therrien, Founding Partner of OMA Rem Koolhaas, and AMO Director Samir Bantal, Countryside: Future of the World (working title) will present speculations about tomorrow through insights into the countryside of today. The exhibition will explore artificial intelligence and automation, the effects of genetic experimentation, political radicalization, mass and micro migration, large-scale territorial management, human-animal ecosystems, subsidies and tax incentives, the impact of the digital on the physical world, and other developments that are altering landscapes across the globe. “The Guggenheim has an appetite for experimentation and a founding belief in the transformative potential of art and architecture,” said Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation. -

Architectural Models
C HAPTER 1 3 Architectural Models This chapter describes the architectural models that can be appHed to GMPLS networks. These architectures are not only useful for driving the ways in which networking equipment is deployed, but they are equally important in determining how the protocols themselves are constructed, and the responsibilities of the various protocol components. Several distinct protocol models have been advanced and the choice between them is far from simple. To some extent, the architectures reflect the backgrounds of their proponents: GMPLS sits uncomfortably between the world of the Internet Protocol and the sphere of influence of more traditional telecommunications companies. As a result, some of the architectures are heavily influenced by the Internet, while others have their roots in SONET/SDH, ATM, and even the telephone system (POTS). The supporters of the diff'erent architectures tend to be polarized and fairly dogmatic. Even though there are many similarities between the models, the proponents will often fail to recognize the overlaps and focus on what is different, making bold and forceful statements about the inadequacy of the other approaches. This chapter does not attempt to anoint any architecture as the best, nor does it even try to draw direct comparisons. Instead, each architecture is presented in its own right, and the reader is left to make up her own mind. Also introduced in this chapter is the end-to-end principle that underlies the lETF's Internet architecture and then describes three diff'erent GMPLS architectural models. The peer and overlay models are simple views of the network and are natural derivatives of the end-to-end architectural model: They can be combined into the third model, the hybrid model, which has the combined flexibihty of the two approaches. -

The argument isillustratedwith a number ofcase studiesof exemplary urban designers,such asMichael Pyatok and Henri Ciriani,and urban designprojects, such asHorton Plazaand Aranya Nagar, from around the world. The paper concludes withan outlineof future directionsin urban design,including criteria for successful urban designprojects (e.g. striking aesthetics, convenient function andlong-term impact) anda proposedpedagogical approach (e.g. interdisciplinary, in-depth and problem-driven). CORTES Virginia Tech This paper situates architectural ethics in the context of observer: they either like it or they don’t. Architects earn practice by using stakeholder theory and the concept of pro- professional degrees and are licensed, like doctors, lawyers, fessional judgment to describe the activities of architectural and engineers. However, architecture is the lowest paid of practice. Architects are taught the skills necessary to make these four professions. Although buildings are tangible arti- ethical professional judgments in the contexts of design and facts of an architect’s work, the design of a building is less professional service, but they are not necessarily taught easily understood by the lay person than, say, recovery from how to effectively communicate the value of those skills to an illness. Often the public may value the architect’s work those outside the profession. Stakeholder theory provides a based on the subjective evaluation of the observer: they framework to describe the practice of architecture in a way either like it or they don’t. (December 2001) Kameshwari Viswanadha, B.Arch., University of Mumbai (India) Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Guillermo Vasquez de Velasco The NAAB (National Architectural Accrediting Board), as an evaluator of architectural education in the United States, has established both graduate architectural curriculum criteria and student performance criteria expected to be fulfilled by the student at the time of graduation. To fulfill these standards set by the NAAB, the graduate selection committees of architecture schools require the ability to predict graduate design studio performance of the applicants. Also, the high percentage of international applicants suggests the necessity of a standardized evaluation tool. This research presents a standardized web based testing environment titled ‘Digital Charrette’ that would contribute toward the fair evaluation of applicants to graduate architectural degree programs. Spatial ability is related to design and visualization skills, a part of the NAAB criteria, and is also associated with design studio performance of architecture students. The Digital Charrette is a VRML environment within which spatial exercises are administered. It is designed to supplement the current admission procedure and would enable the selection of students with a greater potential to perform well in graduate architectural design studios. -

It begins with an idea and culminates in a structure that may serve its occupants for several decades, even centuries. Like the manufacturing of products, building construction requires an ordered and planned assembly of materials. It is, however, far more complicated than product manufacturing. Buildings are assembled outdoors by a large number of diverse constructors and artisans on all types of sites and are subject to all kinds of weather conditions. Additionally, even a modest-sized building must satisfy many performance criteria and legal constraints, requires an immense variety of materials, and involves a large network of design and production firms. Building construction is further complicated by the fact that no two buildings are identical; each one must be custom built to serve a unique function and respond to its specific context and the preferences of its owner, user, and occupant. -

Architecture Architects are licensed professionals who design buildings and other structures. The design of a building involves far more than its appearance alone. Buildings also must be functional, safe, economical, and suit the needs of the people who use them. There are three main steps to become an architect: the attainment of a professional degree in architecture, work experience through an internship, and licensure through the passing of the Architect Registration Exam. Explore Become an Architect at NCARB.org. Degree Students choose from three paths to obtain a professional degree in architecture: • 5-year Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch) degree: most transfer students do not choose this option due to course sequencing or • 2-year master’s degree after obtaining a 4-year bachelor’s degree in architecture or related area (M. Arch) or • 3 to 4-year master’s degree after obtaining a 4-year bachelor’s degree in a major other than architecture (M. Arch) Criteria of Importance for Acceptance to Architecture School May Include • Grade point average • Portfolio if required (freehand drawing, painting, graphic design, sculpture, etc.) • Personal interview • Past practical work experience related to the field (construction, building, planning, etc.) • Strong art, math, and science skills (especially physics) Important Notes • Due to the sequential nature of the coursework, transfer applicants for bachelor degree programs in architecture are often considered for admission as first year students. Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies Volume 12 Auckland University of Technology Material Thinking of Display Auckland 1142, New Zealand Art in the Presence of Architecture — the Balance of Power MONA — A Case Study Adrian Spinks Abstract: This paper explains the rationale and methodologies that emerged throughout the Exhibition Design process at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). It describes the need to adopt a new way of thinking and find new ways of achieving an outcome for a set of complex problems that resulted from the need to bring the art, the antiquities, and the building together. The Museum posed unique challenges to be solved in the exhibition design. It required not just new processes for project management but also the inven- tion of new tools for the design task. Since it opened in January 2011, the response to MONA, from both public and critics, has been overwhelmingly positive. Reviews highlight the notion that it is possible to create an atmosphere that is interesting and engaging from both an architectural and exhibition design perspective. Our initial assumption that architecture and content are equally important seems to have been vindicated.
