Make the plum work

When is a political plum a real plum? That is just one of the many questions sure to face the County Commissioners this month when they have to decide on the appointment to ml one spot on the Charlevoix County Road Commission. It seems that in the past, the "Good OF Boy" syndrome put many a former commissioner onto the road commission as a

These days, we don't think that is the correct way of picking and choosing who will be allowed to serve the populace. We think the commissioners should go with the person who has experience in roads, knows the way to generate more money from the state for maintenance, and in general, do the job. We all know that road departments are seeing less money every year from the state because of the Michigan Depar- tment of Transportation (MDOT) policies. Those policies are allowing less gas tax money be spent on roads that gas users pay for, and more money be spent on railroads, bike paths, airports, people movers and the like. In the meantime, we drivers who use the roads, have to deal with decreasing budgets, and increasing costs. With those, we will all be driving on and around potholes. We hope the commissioners will appoint a person who can deal with those pressures.
