URBAN SPRAWL, PATTERN AND MEASUREMENT IN LOKOJA, NIGERIA URBAN SPRAWL, PATTERN AND MEASUREMENT IN LOKOJA, NIGERIA Michael Oloyede ALABI Department of Geography and Planning, Kogi State University P.M. B. 1008, Anyigba, Nigeria ement [email protected] Abstract Lokoja have been experiencing a large influx of population from its surrounding regions, which had led to rapid growth and expansion that had left profound changes on the landscape in terms of land use and land cover. This study uses the GIS techniques and the application of Shannon’s entropy theory to measure the behavior of sprawl which is based on the notion that landscape entropy or disorganization increases with sprawl, analysis was carried out based on the integration of remote sensing and GIS, the measurement of entropy is devised based on the town location factors, distance from roads, to reveal and capture spatial patterns of urban sprawl. Then Entropy value for each zone revealed a high value, especially areas outside the core city area; like Felele, with the entropy of 0.3, Adankolo, 0.2 and Lokongoma, 0.2. These areas are evenly dispersed settlement, as one move away from the city core. Study shows a correlation of population densities and entropy values of 1987 and 2007, for areas like Felele ,Adankolo, and Lokongoma , which is indicative of spread over space , an evidence of sprawl. But as we go down the table the entropy values seem to tend towards zero.

  • Historical Dynamics of Ọjị Ezinihitte Cultural Festival in Igboland, Nigeria
67 International Journal of Modern Anthropology Int. J. Mod. Anthrop. 2020. Vol. 2, Issue 13, pp: 67 - 98 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/ijma.v2i13.2 Available online at: www.ata.org.tn & https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijma Research Article Historical dynamics of Ọjị Ezinihitte cultural festival in Igboland, Nigeria Akachi Odoemene Department of History and International Studies, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Nigeria E-mail: [email protected] (Received 6 January 2020; Accepted 16 May 2020; Published 6 June 2020) Abstract - Ọjị (kola nut) is indispensable in traditional life of the Igbo of Nigeria. It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality.

A. Nwaogu and G. O. C. Onyeze Department of Biochemistry, School of Biological Sciences Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria. *Corresponding Author’s emails:[email protected] ; [email protected] ABSTRACT: The impact of gas flaring on Ebocha-Egbema environment in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria was investigated. Mbutu Mbaise which has no oil-drilling or gas flaring site, was selected as the control environment. Concentrations of air quality indices: carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), methane (CH4) and particulates were determined. Air quality measurements in Ebocha were made, at least, 500 meters from the flaring site. Values of important indices of soil physico-chemical parameters: pH, nitrate (NO3), sulphate (SO4) and percentage carbon were determined for the two environments. Water samples from the two environments were analysed for their physico-chemical parameters. Results obtained revealed that the mean values for air quality indices, soil and water physico-chemical parameters for Ebocha were substantially higher than those for Mbutu Mbaise except pH values obtained for soil and water, indicating that gas flaring exerts adverse ecological effect on the air, soil and water environments in Ebocha. KEYWORDS: air quality, environmental impact, gas flaring, physico-chemical, parameters. INTRODUCTION The threat to human, animal and plant life posed by pollution due to gas flaring cannot be over- emphasized.

The paper examined the availability of some social infrastructural facilities in rural parts of Imo State. It equally examined the extent to which those facilities have promoted rural development in the State. Data were collected mainly from primary sources. A total number of 2,340 copies of questionnaire were administered in eighteen communities and all were retrieved for the analysis. Research findings revealed unevenness in the availability of potable water supply and telephone (analogue landline) facilities. However, the availability of electricity, educational and health facilities were largely indicated by respondents in the 18 study communities to be well spread across the State. The paper noted some rural development implications as the result of the Z-test of proportion statistics led to the rejection of the null hypothesis and the acceptance of the alternative, which is that, majority of rural areas in Imo State, have significant presence of social infrastructural facilities that enhance economic activities. Keywords: infrastructure, rural development, communities, services, Nigeria Introduction The issue of infrastructure and the development of rural areas have continued to be topical in Nigeria.

  • OF CULTURAL FESTIVALS and RELATIONS in WEST AFRICA: PERSPECTIVES on MBANO of SOUTHEAST NIGERIA SINCE the 20TH CENTURY Chinedu N
Mgbakoigba, Journal of African Studies, Vol. 8 No. 2. May, 2021 OF CULTURAL FESTIVALS AND RELATIONS IN WEST AFRICA: PERSPECTIVES ON MBANO OF SOUTHEAST NIGERIA SINCE THE 20TH CENTURY Chinedu N. Mbalisi OF CULTURAL FESTIVALS AND RELATIONS IN WEST AFRICA: PERSPECTIVES ON MBANO OF SOUTHEAST NIGERIA SINCE THE 20TH CENTURY Chinedu N. Mbalisi Department of History and International Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka [email protected] Abstract Africa is prominently known for its rich cultural heritage, festivals and traditional celebrations. The Igbo of southeast Nigeria are known globally for their addiction to their traditional way of life, belief systems and celebration of numerous cultural festivals. These traditional and cultural festivals form the basic foundation of the rich heritage of the Igbo. Most of these celebrations begin from birth. Usually, the birth of a new born baby is greeted with joy and fanfare by his/her parents and their relatives. The celebrations continue till the period of transition (death); from puberty to adulthood, marriage, title taking, old age till one rejoins his/her ancestors, then comes the final celebration. Mbano people of southeast Nigeria have numerous traditional and cultural festivals which form the nucleus of their relations with their neighbours. In fact, the cultural festivals depict the rich cultural heritage of the people and are used to show in most parts, the kinship between the people and their proximate neighbours. This paper essays to demonstrate the import of these traditional and cultural festivals to the nature of relationship prevalent between Mbano people and their neighbours in southeast Nigeria. The work adopts the orthodox historical method of narrative and analysis.

Journal of Literature, Languages and Linguistics - An Open Access International Journal Vol.2 2013 The Relationship between Placement of Female Teachers and Academic Performnace of Secondary School Students in Owerri Urban of Imo State Lazarus I. okoroji* Julius O. Anyanwu. School of Management, Federal University o Technology, PMB 1526, Owerri. Imo State, Nigeria. * E-mail of the corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract This research focused on the relationship between placement of Women Teachers and Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Owerri Urban of Imo State. Descriptive research design was adopted in carrying out the study. A random sampling technique was used to select ten (10) secondary schools used in the study out of twenty secondary schools in Owerri Urban of Imo state. Questionnaire was developed to collect primary data. The data collected was analyzed using the simple percentage method. It ascertained whether there are more female teachers in the Owerri Urban Secondary Schools than their male counterparts thereby assessing the role of women teachers to the education of the students, vis-à-vis their academic performance. In pursuance of the objectives, some hypotheses were stated as seen in chapter 1. A total of twelve schools (12) were sampled with twenty five (25) principals and vice principals, some classroom teachers and officials of the Secondary Education Management Board Owerri Zone as respondents. Data was collected through the use of questionnaires, oral interviews and personal observations respectively. From the findings as reflected in chapter five (5), it was concluded that although many variables are contributory to the excellent and poor performance of students, the posting of many women teachers in a School lowers teachers/school productivity and consequently affects adversely the student’s academic performance.
