Saint Thomas' Episcopal Parish, Croom, Prince George's County, Maryland Was Created out of the Northern Portion of St
Saint Thomas' Episcopal Parish, Croom, Prince George's County, Maryland was created out of the northern portion of St. Paul's Episcopal Parish (1692) in 1850. The records of St. Thomas' Parish prior to its independence are included with the records of St. Paul's Parish, Baden, Maryland. St. Thomas' Parish was formally recognized by the Diocese of Maryland in 1851 and the new parish's boundaries were defined at that time. The parish was bounded on the north by Queen Anne's Episcopal Parish, on the south by St. Paul's Episcopal Parish, on the west by King George's Episcopal Parish, also known as St. John's, and on the east by the Patuxent River. The new St. Thomas' Parish encompassed the area near the county seat of Upper Marlboro that was served by Trinity Episcopal Church, an independent congregation founded by Bishop Claggett in the 19th century. The first rector of the newly created parish was James A. McKenney. McKenney was instrumental in the creation of the parish and later helped establish a parish chapel, the Church of the Atonement (1874), in Cheltenham, Maryland. Over the course of its history, St. Thomas' Parish has included four congregations: St. Thomas' Church, Croom, Church of the Atonement, Cheltenham, St. Simons Mission, Croom, and The Chapel of the Incarnation, Brandywine, all in Prince George's County, Maryland. Saint Thomas' Church, located in Croom, was built between 1743-1745 in accordance with a 1732 act of the Maryland Assembly. The original church building was a simple, yet well designed, English Georgian "auditory" church. -

Walker This dissertation is a study of the loyalist Church of England clergy in the American Revolution. By reconstructing the experience and identity of this largely-misunderstood group, it sheds light on the relationship between church and empire, the role of religious pluralism and toleration in the American Revolution, the dynamics of loyalist politics, and the religious impact of the American Revolution on Britain. It is based primarily on the loyalist clergy’s own correspondence and writings, the records of the American Loyalist Claims Commission, and the archives of the SPG (the Church of England’s missionary arm). The study focuses on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonies, where Anglicans formed a religious minority and where their clergy were overwhelmingly loyalist. It begins with the founding of the SPG in 1701 and its first forays into America. It then examines the state of religious pluralism and toleration in New England, the polarising contest over the proposed creation of an American bishop after the Seven Years’ War, and the role of the loyalist clergy in the Revolutionary War itself, focusing particularly on conflicts occasioned by the Anglican liturgy and Book of Common Prayer. -

A Primer on the Government of the Episcopal Church and Its Underlying Theology
A Primer on the government of The Episcopal Church and its underlying theology offered by the Ecclesiology Committee of the House of Bishops Fall 2013 The following is an introduction to how and why The Episcopal Church came to be, beginning in the United States of America, and how it seeks to continue in “the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Rooted in the original expansion of the Christian faith, the Church developed a distinctive character in England, and further adapted that way of being Church for a new context in America after the Revolution. The Episcopal Church has long since grown beyond the borders of the United States, with dioceses in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador (Central and Litoral), Haiti, Honduras, Micronesia, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Venezuela and Curacao, and the Virgin Islands, along with a Convocation of churches in six countries in Europe. In all these places, Episcopalians have adapted for their local contexts the special heritage and mission passed down through the centuries in this particular part of the Body of Christ. “Ecclesiology,” the study of the Church in the light of the self-revelation of God in Jesus Christ, is the Church’s thinking and speaking about itself. It involves reflection upon several sources: New Testament images of the Church (of which there are several dozen); the history of the Church in general and that of particular branches within it; various creeds and confessional formulations; the structure of authority; the witness of saints; and the thoughts of theologians. Our understanding of the Church’s identity and purpose invariably intersects with and influences to a large extent how we speak about God, Christ, the Spirit, and ourselves in God’s work of redemption. -

Who was Bishop Samuel Seabury? By The Rev. Jay Cayanyang Eternal God, you blessed your servant Samuel Seabury with the gift of perseverance to renew the Anglican inheritance in North America: Grant that, joined together in unity with our bishops and nourished by your holy Sacraments, we proclaim the Gospel of redemption with apostolic zeal; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Samuel Seabury was born on November 30, 1729, in North Groton, Connecticut (present day Ledyard and near Gales Ferry where Bishop Seabury Anglican Church is located). His father, also known by the same name, was the local Congregational minister. Shortly after Seabury was born, his father resigned his pastorate to pursue Holy Orders in the Church of England. While his father was away, Seabury’s mother, Abigail died. After ordination, his father returned to minister in New London, Connecticut under the banner of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. Later, the elder Seabury remarried and moved to an assignment in Hempstead, Long Island where under his father’s tutelage as young boy, Samuel Seabury and his brother Caleb prepared for college. As such, Samuel Seabury grew up in home a life that was greatly shaped church life and the Book of Common Prayer. Samuel Seabury studied at Yale College and afterwards returned home to Long Island to study medicine and assist his father in a nearby town as a catechist. Eventually, through the encouragement and support of his father, he went on for further study in Edinburgh, Scotland. -

1 The Beginnings Here there bee not many people. —RoseRT JUST The geographical area of the original Diocese of New York was the entire state. It was not until 1838, and then only after profound misgiv- ings, that the laws of the Episcopal Church were altered to permit the subdivision of dioceses within the state. Thus, the Diocese of New York was all that territory from Long Island's wave-washed tip to Niagara's steady roar. Within this vast space lay the Adirondack Mountains, whose forests sloped northward to the St. Lawrence plains. Further west were the high fields surrounding the Finger Lakes, where the curved horizon makes a man know that he truly inhabits a spherical earth. Below these lakes is the Southern Tier, lonely and grim-gray In winter, benign and balmy in summer. The state diocese knew all the moods and variations of nature. No citizen of the new nation would know them better than Hobart and Onderdonk, the much-traveled third and fourth bishops of the Diocese of New York. Their predecessors, Samuel Provoost and Benjamin Moore, never saw the broad varieties of New York. They were town men, born and bred in Manhattan. It is one of the ironies of history that these men, the first bishops of the diocese, conceived their diocese more nearly as we do today: a jurisdiction flowing from the City of New York, dependent upon the metropolis, yet offering it the gifts and produce a city always requires from its rural surroundings. The men and women who perceived the early fortunes of the Dio- cese of New York may have seen the state as a builder's square.
