  • Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu Connie Smith Tamil Nadu Overview
Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu Connie Smith Tamil Nadu Overview Tamil Nadu is bordered by Pondicherry, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Sri Lanka, which has a significant Tamil minority, lies off the southeast coast. Tamil Nadu, with its traceable history of continuous human habitation since pre-historic times has cultural traditions amongst the oldest in the world. Colonised by the East India Company, Tamil Nadu was eventually incorporated into the Madras Presidency. After the independence of India, the state of Tamil Nadu was created in 1969 based on linguistic boundaries. The politics of Tamil Nadu has been dominated by DMK and AIADMK, which are the products of the Dravidian movement that demanded concessions for the 'Dravidian' population of Tamil Nadu. Lying on a low plain along the southeastern coast of the Indian peninsula, Tamil Nadu is bounded by the Eastern Ghats in the north and Nilgiri, Anai Malai hills and Palakkad (Palghat Gap) on the west. The state has large fertile areas along the Coromandel coast, the Palk strait, and the Gulf of Mannar. The fertile plains of Tamil Nadu are fed by rivers such as Kaveri, Palar and Vaigai and by the northeast monsoon. Traditionally an agricultural state, Tamil Nadu is a leading producer of agricultural products. Tribal Population As per 2001 census, out of the total state population of 62,405,679, the population of Scheduled Castes is 11,857,504 and that of Scheduled Tribes is 651,321. This constitutes 19% and 1.04% of the total population respectively.1 Further, the literacy level of the Adi Dravidar is only 63.19% and that of Tribal is 41.53%.

  • Prime Minister of Cambodia Office of the Prime Minister Royal Government of Cambodia Government Peace Building No
His Excellency Samdech Techo Hun Sen Prime Minister of Cambodia Office of the Prime Minister Royal Government of Cambodia Government Peace Building No. 38, Confederation Russia Blvd (110) Phnom Penh Cambodia [email protected] May 22, 2020 Re: The Threat of the Dog Meat Trade to Cambodia Dear Prime Minister Hun Sen, We are writing on behalf of the Asia for Animals Coalition, representing international animal welfare and conservation organizations regarding our concerns about the dog meat trade in Cambodia and its threat to public health, in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the worsening situation of the pandemic globally and throughout Southeast Asia, with 45,2091 human coronavirus infections in the region to date, the mass trafficking, sale, and slaughter of companion animals often alongside wild animals throughout the Kingdom continues unchallenged. The dog meat trade is rampant in Cambodia, involving the slaughter and consumption of up to 3 million dogs each year, many of them stolen pets, with an unknown number trafficked regularly into neighboring Vietnam. Research suggests that only 12% of Cambodians regularly consume dog meat, and consumption remains a controversial practice among Khmer people.2 The dog meat trade has proven to be a significant threat to public health, facilitating the transmission of deadly diseases including rabies, cholera, and trichinella. The trade also directly undermines Cambodia’s rabies control efforts and disrupts any attempts at achieving herd immunity through mass canine vaccination programs. Despite growing global public health concerns regarding live animal interfaces and wet markets and the potential for the emergence of novel and deadly viruses, the dog meat trade in Cambodia continues to operate - even in the face of mounting calls to end this trade.

K. Puram, New Delhi-110066 FOREWORD Salinity is a significant challenge and poses risks to sustainable development of Coastal regions of India. If left unmanaged, salinity has serious implications for water quality, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, supply of water for critical human needs and industry and the longevity of infrastructure. The Coastal Salinity has become a persistent problem due to ingress of the sea water inland. This is the most significant environmental and economical challenge and needs immediate attention. The coastal areas are more susceptible as these are pockets of development in the country. Most of the trade happens in the coastal areas which lead to extensive migration in the coastal areas. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt.

This article demonstrates the extent to which such aspirations could be realized. Keyword: women’s political representation, local government, India, Pakistan INTRODUCTION institutions and the donor countries. With few exceptions, this is most vividly illustrated by the The decade of the 1980s saw an increasing rise of political gangsters in the leadership of enthusiasm for decentralisation in developing parties, parliaments and executive bodies at the countries. The concept itself was part of the good local level in most countries1. The failure of governance agenda of the World Bank and decentralizing was due to inadequate local donor countries in the first world (Malik, 2016). It was thought that the failure of earlier government framework, ineffective implementation development paradigms (especially the structural or capture of local government by interest groups or adjustment program) was due to bad institutional a combination of these factors (Malik, 2009).
