    CHAPTER FOUR THE MORALITY OF HYPOCRISY: GNAPHEUS’S LATIN PLAY HYPOCRISIS AND THE LUTHERAN REFORMATION Verena Demoed Introduction In drama, moral judgment is not uttered through words alone; it can also be expressed through non-verbal and seemingly subsid- iary things such as props, costumes and stage action.1 This paper will attempt to clarify how Gnapheus used his Latin plays, especially his Hypocrisis (‘Hypocrisy’, published in 1544 and 1564), in debates on religious matters. Gulielmus Gnapheus Hagiensis, or Willem de Volder (Fuller), or Van de Voldersgraft, of The Hague (1493–1568) is an example of a committed writer. He held outspoken views on the Protestant reformations, which he expounded in pamphlets and plays. Because of his commitment, his oeuvre is pre-eminently suitable as material in an investigation of the role literature played within public debate, and the effect it may have had on public opinion. Hypocrisis is his most outspoken play. It was written and produced in East Prussia, where Lutheranism was proclaimed as a state religion. This enabled the author (he may even have felt obliged) to expound his reforma- tional ideas in a more direct, explicit and uncompromising manner than he would have done in the Low Countries and West Prussia, where he lived before the 1540s, and which at that time still remained officially Catholic. The discourses in which these narratives were developed emerged in the 1550s and were continued and modified by subsequent generations of migrants. Writings of the first generation of the diaspora set the tone for later chronicles and other historiographical works of the various stranger churches. This chapter describes the emergence of discourses that shaped the later diasporic networks and provided images with which individuals and groups could identify. Such processes of identification were necessary for the formation of the diaspora. Refugees from the Low Countries and their descendants saw their fate not as an individual experience but as one shared with a wider community of exiles with whom they remained connected, often over great distances. Historians and church historians have sometimes attributed the cultivation of a diasporic mentality and a pronounced theology of exile to specific branches of Western Protestantism, especially Calvinism. 68 We must, however, not forget that these religious diasporic discourses had their own development and were not initially and self-evidently part of the new confessional cultures that emerged in the sixteenth century. This chapter explores how these discourses came into being and how they were appropriated by groups and individuals within the refugee networks.

Three-quarters of the 1204 martyrs in the Spanish Netherlands were Menno- nites (almost half of them women) as op- posed to the Reformed (Calvinist) faith. As many as seventy percent of the martyrs in Ghent, Bruges, and Coutrai were Menno- nites. Two-thirds of the martyrs from the Lowlands documented in T. J. van Braght’s 1660 Martyrs’ Mirror were Flemish. “For the Flemish followers of Menno Simons it was `a century of struggle,’” writes histo- rian A.L.E. Verheyden. Where the brother- hood of the Northern Netherlands soon di- vided under the influence of the individual- ism of elders, “....the severe repression in the South saw the Mennonites rallying anx- iously around the church and expecting from it the greatest blessing,” Anabaptism in Flanders (Scottdale, Pa., 1961), page 9. Camerata Trajectina besteedt op deze cd aandacht aan de lutherse melodieën in de Nederlanden van de 16de eeuw. Daarmee herdenkt het ensemble dat het in 2017 (op 31 oktober) 500 jaar geleden was dat Luther zijn 95 stellingen in Wittenberg publiek maakte en daarmee het begin van de reformatie inluidde. Martin – of in goed Nederlands: Maarten – Luther hield van muziek, was een vaardige luitist en had een heldere tenorstem. Hij zag in de muziek een uitstekend middel om God te loven en de geloofsbeleving te verdiepen. Anders dan later bij Calvijn, behielden meerstemmige muziek en orgelspel bij hem een plaats in de eredienst. Naast preken en gedrukte pamfletten en boeken bleken zijn liederen een machtig wapen om zijn boodschap te verspreiden. Soms schreef hij liederen op oude volksmelodieën of gregoriaanse hymnen, maar hij maakte in enkele gevallen ook zelf de melodieën, al dan niet in samenwerking met musici uit zijn kring. Toen Luthers eerste liederen in 1524 in druk verschenen, werden vrijwel tegelijkertijd ook meerstemmige zettingen van de Wittenbergse hofkapelmeester Johann Walter (1496- 1570) gepubliceerd onder de titel Eyn geystlich Gesangk Buchleyn. Luther schreef het voorwoord bij de uitgave en daarin prees hij meerstemmige muziek met zang en instrumenten nadrukkelijk aan als nuttig middel bij de opvoeding van de jeugd. Walters bundel zou nog vier keer worden herdrukt, waarbij het aantal zettingen groeide. Luther leefde in Wittenberg onder bescherming van de tolerante Frederik de Wijze, keurvorst van Saksen.

Adam Grelinger Parochial Vicars Sunday, August 5, 2018 e Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ✆✝ ✞✟✠✡☛✞ Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the fl ock of my pasture, says the LORD. ☞✌ ✟✟✌✡ (Jer. 23:1) We heard this scripture verse just two weeks ago and still the words resonate in my heart since the scandalous actions of abuse by the now retired Archbishop McCarrick have come to light. How saddened I was to hear that the credible allegations include the abuse of a minor some fi fty years ago and abuse against seminarians. ere are no excuses for the horrible trauma he caused his victims through these criminal and sinful actions. He was a shepherd who’s deplorable actions have misled and scattered the fl ock. ese actions are a betrayal of the offi ce of bishop, of being a shepherd of God’s fl ock. For a bishop is a successor of the Apostles who should sacrifi ce himself for the good of the Church like the Apostles Peter and Paul, who imitated Jesus’ sacrifi ce on the Cross.
