For about a century, a great challenge for theoretical physics consisted in understanding the role of quantum mode of description of our Universe (\quantum gravity"). There are better chances to concoct a satisfying quantum picture of the very early space{time, near the Big Bang, where natural scales of events like inflation extrapolated from current observations resist any purely clas- sical description and rather require quantum input. Many physicists and mathematicians tried to understand the quantum early Universe, sometimes unaware of input of the other community. One of the goals of this article is to contribute to the communication of the two communities. In the main text, I present some ideas and results contained in the recent survey/research papers [Le13] (physicists) and [MaMar14], [MaMar15] (mathematicians). Introduction and survey 0.1. NEOPLATONIZING GNOSTICISM AND GNOSTICIZING NEOPLATONISM IN THE “AMERICAN BAROQUE” Jay Bregman Hilary Armstrong gave the Gnostics a fair hearing in his “Dualism: Platonic, Gnostic, and Christian.”1 He basically viewed Gnosticism as having some points of contact with Platonism, but since they were not doing the same thing as philosophers, he reasoned, it would be wrong to treat them as “bad philosophers.” Although Gnostic anti-cosmism is balanced by his nuanced view of certain Gnostic pro-cosmic ideas, Gnostics are “mythicizers,” hence doing something very different from philosophers since, in the last analysis, they think that the cosmos is at best transitory—a place to flee from. However, in the last decade or so, there has been a reconsideration of Armstrong’s view. Led especially by John Turner and others, scholars have affirmed that Gnostics, Middle Platonists, and Neoplatonists indeed have more in common philosophically than had been previously supposed; Gnos- tics were perhaps even writing commentaries on Plato’s dialogues in order to gain a respectable hearing in Plotinus’ seminars.2 Nineteenth-century America was the scene of an earlier engagement with Gnosticism, through which heterodox thinkers paved the way for its current serious reception. I will trace the roots and anticipations of contem- porary discussions, in the Neoplatonic, late Transcendentalist journal, The Platonist, and other North American sources. Metaphysical thinkers of the later American Renaissance painted their religious symbols on a Neoplatonic canvas. A secularizing world had given rise to notions of a universal syncretistic cosmic Theism, which welcomed the “esoteric” strains of all traditions. Alexander Wilder, M.D., a regular con- tributor to The Platonist, also cast a wide syncretistic net: the Neoplatonists taught Platonic philosophy in the form of a religion embracing some of the characteristic features of Jainism, the Sankhya and Pythagorean schools (hē gnōsis tōn ontōn). -

Schellenberg's Divine Hiddenness and Human Reason claims that the exis tence of reflective persons who long to solve the problem of God's existence but cannot do so constitutes an evil rendering God's existence in1probable. In this essay, I present Schellenberg's argument and argue that the kind of reasonable nonbelief Schellenberg needs for his argument to succeed is unlikely to exist. Since Schellenberg's argument is an inductive-style version of the problem of evil, the empirical improbability of the premise Ichallenge renders the conclusions derived fron1 it empirically improbable as well. 1. I greatly appreciate your mentorship and patience through this process. iii ABSTRACT The primary purpose of this thesis is to show that the doctrine of open theism denies the doctrine of inerrancy. Specifically open theism falsely interprets Scriptural references to God’s Divine omniscience and sovereignty, and conversely ignores the weighty Scriptural references to those two attributes which attribute perfection and completeness in a manner which open theism explicitly denies. While the doctrine of inerrancy has been hotly debated since the Enlightenment, and mostly so through the modern and postmodern eras, it may be argued that there has been a traditional understanding of the Bible’s inerrancy that is drawn from Scripture, and has been held since the early church fathers up to today’s conservative theologians. This view was codified in October, 1978 in the form of the Chicago Statement of Biblical Inerrancy. -

HOLMES ROLSTON III BOTH science and religion are challenged by the environmental crisis, both to reevaluate the natural world and to reevaluate their dialogue with each other. Both are thrown into researching fundamental theory and practice in the face of an upheaval unprecedented in human history, indeed in planetary history. Life on Earth is in jeopardy owing to the behavior of one species, the only species that is either scientific or religious, the only species claiming privilege as the "wise spe- cies," Homo sapiens. Nature and the human relation to nature must be evaluated within cultures, classically by their religions, currently also by the sciences so eminent in Western culture. Ample numbers of theologians and ethicists have become persuaded that religion needs to pay more attention to ecology, and many ecologists recognize religious dimensions to caring for nature and to addressing the ecological crisis. Somewhat ironically, just when humans, with their increasing industry and technology, seemed further and further from nature, having more knowledge about natural processes and more power to manage them, just when humans were more and more rebuilding their environments, thinking perhaps to escape nature, the natural world has emerged as a focus of concern. Nature remains the milieu of 376 SCIENCE AND RELIGION 377 culture—so both science and religion have discovered. In a currently popular vocabulary, humans need to get themselves "naturalized." Using another meta- phor, nature is the "womb" of culture, but a womb that humans never entirely leave. -

News and Notices SCIENCE‐SPIRIRTUALITY Templeton Prize The winner of the 2001 Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion is The Revd Canon Dr Arthur Peacocke of Oxford University. As a physical biochemist specialising in biological macromolecules, Dr Peacocke pioneered early research into the structure of DNA, showing that the chains in the molecule are not branched but form a double helix. In 1971, the one‐ time agnostic became an Anglican priest. The only Oxford University Theology faculty member to hold both a Doctor of Science and a Doctor of Divinity degree, Dr Peacocke is a strong proponent of "critical realism," holding that both science and theology aim to depict reality and must be subject to scrutiny, while recognising their creative interaction. Created by global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton in 1972, each year the Templeton Prize acknowledges a living person who has shown extraordinary originality in advancing humanity's understanding of God and the role of spirituality in people's lives. Sir John has sought to honour progress in religion just as the Nobel Prizes recognise advances in economics, medicine, and chemistry. Currently valued at £700,000 sterling, the Prize represents the world's largest annual monetary award given to an individual and is always set at a level that exceeds that of the Nobels. Dr Peacocke joins an illustrious group of professional scientists who have won the Templeton Prize: last year's winner, Freeman Dyson, a physicist whose futuristic views have consistently called for the reconciliation of technology and social justice; physicist and theologian Ian Barbour in 1999; astrophysicist Paul Davies in 1995; physicist Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker in 1989; and Benedictine monk and professor of astrophysics Stanley Jaki in 1987. -
The Heritage of Non-Theistic Belief in China
The Heritage of Non-theistic Belief in China Joseph A. Adler Kenyon College Presented to the international conference, "Toward a Reasonable World: The Heritage of Western Humanism, Skepticism, and Freethought" (San Diego, September 2011) Naturalism and humanism have long histories in China, side-by-side with a long history of theistic belief. In this paper I will first sketch the early naturalistic and humanistic traditions in Chinese thought. I will then focus on the synthesis of these perspectives in Neo-Confucian religious thought. I will argue that these forms of non-theistic belief should be considered aspects of Chinese religion, not a separate realm of philosophy. Confucianism, in other words, is a fully religious humanism, not a "secular humanism." The religion of China has traditionally been characterized as having three major strands, the "three religions" (literally "three teachings" or san jiao) of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Buddhism, of course, originated in India in the 5th century BCE and first began to take root in China in the 1st century CE, so in terms of early Chinese thought it is something of a latecomer. Confucianism and Daoism began to take shape between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. But these traditions developed in the context of Chinese "popular religion" (also called folk religion or local religion), which may be considered a fourth strand of Chinese religion. And until the early 20th century there was yet a fifth: state religion, or the "state cult," which had close relations very early with both Daoism and Confucianism, but after the 2nd century BCE became associated primarily (but loosely) with Confucianism.
