FLL100215 Ovation Ad-Spence [5x8] MECH.indd 1 4/28/17 8:30 AM WELCOME LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Last week, I had two brushes with my life before Jacksonville. First, I overheard a couple in the lobby at the Rodrigo y Gabriela show saying that the Florida Theatre reminded them of the Keswick Theatre in Philadelphia. Then just three days later, at the Dave Koz show, one of our donors mentioned that they were looking forward to Chris Botti on April 13, and the last place they saw him was, “A cute little hole in the wall in Easton, Pennsylvania,” which I correctly identified on the first guess as the State Theatre.

During my pre-Jacksonville life, I was the President of a regional performing arts center coalition covering the Mid-Atlantic States. I attended many meetings at both the Keswick and State Theatres. They’re amazing places. The Keswick dates from 1928. Although it sits just across the city line in Glenside, PA, it is one of Philadelphia’s key venues. It was “saved” by a private partnership that included my friend Roy Snyder, whose piece of the effort was sweat equity, managing and booking the theatre. Roy just recently passed away.

The State Theatre in Easton dates from 1910, with a significant 1926 expansion. It is not just a “hole in the wall.” It is a magnificent venue, managed and programmed by a more traditional nonprofit corporation, and its Executive Director since 1991 or 1992 is my friend Shelly Brown, who has built the venue’s reputation as a place where everything sells.

I mention these conversations because they’re terrific examples of the larger historic theatre community that the Florida Theatre belongs to. All across America, audiences have bonded with their historic theatres because of the acoustics, the historic architectural detail, and the diversity of entertainment they offer. Simply, they are the best places to see a show.

I’m realistic, though. You might still have to go to the arena for specific shows. It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely that Paul McCartney is going to wake up tomorrow, call his manager, and say, “Let’s skip the big paydays in the 10,000 seaters and do a run of Florida’s historic theatres!”

However, any town can build an arena, but not everybody has a theatre like this, and I can’t imagine seeing Diana Krall (Feb. 7), Gordon Lightfoot (Feb. 18) or Paula Poundstone (Feb. 16) in an arena. They demand intimacy, and of course the dance companies and theatrical artists like Mummenschanz (April 21) require an actual theatre, and we’re lucky to have the Florida Theatre. For audiences that love live entertainment, the Florida Theatre is north Florida’s most authentic and intimate venue showcasing terrific artists, and we’re delighted you joined us tonight.

Numa C. Saisselin President
