  • Montana Senate Race Looks Competitive
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 19, 2013 INTERVIEWS: Tom Jensen 919-744-6312 IF YOU HAVE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE E-MAIL [email protected], OR CONSULT THE FINAL PARAGRAPH OF THE PRESS RELEASE Montana Senate Race Looks Competitive Raleigh, N.C. – With potential threats in the 2014 Democratic primary and general election, Senator Max Baucus could have a difficult but not impossible road to re-election next year, according to PPP’s latest Montana poll. If former Gov. Brian Schweitzer decides to run for the Senate seat, he leads against Baucus 54% to 35% with Democratic primary voters. That support holds with moderate and liberal primary voters, and it represents a 15-point increase since PPP’s last poll on this match-up in September. Schweitzer’s +77 favorability rating (86/9) with Montana Democrats is also 19 points higher than Baucus’ +58 job approval rating (76/18). Baucus also trails two possible Republican challengers by 5 points—he’s down 44/49 against Steve Daines and 42/47 against Marc Racicot. Baucus holds leads against Tim Fox (46/43), Corey Stapleton (45/38) and Champ Edmunds (47/37), but these three potential GOP contenders all have name recognition below 50%. General election voters narrowly disapprove of Baucus’ job performance 48% to 45%. 56% of voters have a favorable view of Schweitzer while 37% have an unfavorable opinion. Schweitzer’s popularity extends across party lines—83% of Democrats, 20% of Republicans and 40% of independents approve of Baucus to 93% of Democrats, 26% of Republicans and 57% of independents who have a favorable view of Schweitzer.

  • PPP Last Polled the State in June, When It Was 41-33
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 19, 2013 INTERVIEWS: Tom Jensen 919-744-6312 IF YOU HAVE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE E-MAIL [email protected], OR CONSULT THE FINAL PARAGRAPH OF THE PRESS RELEASE Daines favored for Baucus’ seat Raleigi h, N.C. – Some Democrats, trying to clear the field for John Walsh, are frustrated by John Bohlinger’s candidacy for U.S. Senate in Montana, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter which one runs against current at-large Rep. Steve Daines next fall—they both are down double digits. Only 37% of voters approve of Daines’ job performance, with 42% disapproving, down a net 13 points since PPP last polled the state in June, when it was 41-33. But the partisanship of the electorate, Presideent Obama’s 34% approval rating, the toxicity of Obamacare, and both Democrats’ low profiles help Daines post a 51-36 lead over Bohlinger and 52-35 over Wallsh. In June, Daines had 45% to 49% of the vote against other Democrats. Part of Daines’ lead is name identification. Only 21% of voters are unfamiliar with him, versus 40% for Bohlinger and 53% for Walsh. Because of that, about twice as many Democrats and independents are undecided as Republicans. The race is already closer in the event Champ Edmunds defeats Daines in the primary, but that looks unlikely. 66% of GOP primary voters prefer Daines to only 7% behind Edmunds. Edmunds is even less well-known than the Democratss, but he leadds each by two points (39-37 over Bohlinger and 38-36 over Walsh).
