Does the Primetime Television Upfront Still Matter? by Steve Sternberg
May 2019 #62 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Does the Primetime Television Upfront Still Matter? By Steve Sternberg For American television viewers, the start of the new primetime television season is still four months away. For insiders at media agencies, networks, and advertisers, however, the Upfront season is placing thoughts of September squarely into May. Of course, the very idea of a fall TV season in today’s video world seems old fashioned. The broadcast networks might still adhere to fall and mid-season schedules for debuting new shows, but their competitors do not. Ad-supported cable networks premiere many new series when the broadcast nets are airing repeats and some limited-run series (mostly non-sweeps months and the summer). Premium cable networks, such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz, air new shows throughout the year. Streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, release full seasons of new series whenever they happen to be ready. CBS All Access does as well, although it releases new episodes on a weekly schedule, rather than all at once. In a television landscape of 10-episode cable series, and streaming services where you can binge- watch entire seasons, viewers don’t necessarily think in terms of TV seasons anymore. Nevertheless, the broadcast networks still hold onto a schedule that starts in the fall. Throughout April and May, cable and broadcast networks give presentations to the ad industry in which they unveil their fall schedules and discuss -

You Don’t Know - Song Lyrics ©Marshall Mitchell All Rights Reserved Freckled Face Girl - Marshall Mitchell © All Rights Reserved A freckled face girl in the front row of my class Headin’ Outta Wichita - Harvey Toalson/Marshall Mitchell On the playground she runs way too fast © All Rights Reserved And I can’t catch her so I can let her know I think she is pretty and I love her so Headin’ outta Wichita; we’re headed into Little Rock tonight And we could’ve had a bigger crowd but I think the band was sounding pretty tight She has pigtails and ribbons in her hair With three long weeks on this road there ain’t nothing left to do, you just listen to the radio When she smiles my heart jumps into the air And your mind keeps a’reachin’ back to find that old flat land you have the nerve to call your home And all through high school I wanted her to know That I thought she was pretty and I loved her so Now, you can’t take time setting up because before you know it’s time for you to play And you give until you’re giving blood then you realize they ain’t a’listenin’ anyway I could yell it in assembly And then you tell yourself that it can’t get worse and it does, and all you can think about is breaking down I could write it on the wall And then you find yourself back on the road following a dotted line to another town Because when I am around her I just cannot seem to speak at all I wanna see a starlit night and I wanna hold my baby tight again While in college I saw her now and then And I’m really tired of this grind and I’d sure like to see the face -
SILLY SEASON by Michael J
SILLY SEASON By Michael J. Carroll he Brits have a notion of the “silly season;” a time, usually in summer, when news stories that are not really news or stories T appear in the media because there is little else to report. Sometimes the silly season can flow beyond the news into everyday life. Silly season for my family and friends the pits. I suppose singing may be all involved the singer Tom Jones, a hearty they have now after Maggie Thatcher guy who has been belting out songs from closed the collieries and made them the mid-1960s through the present. You all, as the Brits are fond of saying, might fairly question what Tom Jones “redundant.” has to do with silly season or anything Jones spent a year in bed as a kid else for that matter. It started when recovering from Tuberculosis. He one of our number announced that he married at 16 and stayed married There were years when he recorded was attending the Midwest reunion of to the same woman with probably little and cashed in for millions doing the Jones branch of his family. I never hundreds of detours and dalliances over Las Vegas shows. But he always came knew he had Jones’s in the family tree the decades. At 75 he may now be a back. but did not demand to see a genogram paragon of fidelity. I saw him once on a New Year’s or contact the Mormon genealogists Jones exploded on the world in the Eve “Dame Edna” television show. -

He was 57. One of the best-selling musicians of all time, a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Prince won seven Grammy awards, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. Songs including' "When Doves Cry," "Raspberry Beret," and "Kiss" soared to popularity and became pop• culture staples, widely known by fans of all genres of music. The Voice System of Amharic
Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education The Voice system of Amharic Desalegn Belaynew Workneh A dissertation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor - December 2019 The Voice System of Amharic Desalegn Belaynew Workneh A thesis submitted for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor UiT – The Arctic University of Norway Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) December 2019 Abstract This dissertation examines the voice system of Amharic. I have studied the voice features including an anticausative and a pair of causative functional items focusing on their selection, interpretation and syntactic projection. The voice items display some interesting properties that made them worth an indepth inves tigation. First, the single anticausative morpheme is associated with multiple constructions such as the passive, reciprocal, reflexive, middle and the like. This raises the foundational theoretical problem on the relation between form and meaning. Furthermore, the causative items display quite striking contrasts with the anticausative in selection. The direct causative item filters verb classes. The indirect causative does a similar filtering, but mostly on the types of external arguments. The anticausative, on the other hand, imposes little selection restriction on the verb and argument types. How the selection patterns are correlated with the interpretation and with the syntactic posi tion of the voice items is the main concern of this study. In this dissertation, I have proposed that all the crucial properties of the voice items, includ ing the observed distinctions in selection, projection and interpretation, can be explained by understanding the voice items two types–those that belong to both the syntactic and semantic domains, and those belong to the syntax only. -
