Tarheel Slim (Allen Bunn, aka Alden Bunn) was a rhythm and blues ‘jack of all trades’. He recorded gospel, rhythm and blues, doo wop, hot rock’n’roll and downhome blues. In the 1940s he recorded gospel in North Carolina with the Gospel Four and the Selah Jubilee Singers and with Thurman Ruth in 1949 he formed The Jubilaters. At Apollo Records they switched to rhythm and blues as the classic vocal group The Larks. He waxed in 1952 under the name Tarheel Slim and Allen Bunn for Apollo, and for Red Robin as Tarheel Slim and Alden Bunn and he also cut rhythm and blues with the vocal group The Wheels for Premium Records. With his partner Ann Sanford he recorded as Tarheel Slim and Little Ann, (and also as The Lovers) for Aladdin’s Lamp subsidiary as well as for Atco, Fire, Fury and Enjoy. He recorded classic rock’n’roll sides such as ‘Wildcat Tamer’ and ‘No. 9 Train’. In the 1970s he recorded for Peter Lowry’s Trix label. Thursday, 2/15/18 At the CUNY Sonic Arts Center West 140th Street & Convent Avenue, New York Or enter at 138th Street off Convent Avenue Shepard Hall (the Gothic building) – Recital Hall (Room 95, ground floor) An elevator is located in the center of the building Bobby Robinson and his Happy House Presented by Matthew Barton and John Broven Less than a mile south from where the New York chapter of ARSC holds it monthly meetings stood Bobby’s Happy House, a record store at West 125th Street and Eighth Avenue where the legendary Bobby Robinson held forth for over sixty years. Here, he operated such legendary record labels as Red Robin, Fire, Fury, and Enjoy, and released countless classic blues, r&b, rock ‘n’ roll, vocal group, and hip-hop sides by Wilbert Harrison, Gladys Knight and the Pips, King Curtis, Elmore James, Buster Brown, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Lee Dorsey, Tarheel Slim and Little Ann, Don Gardner and Dee Dee Ford, Grandmaster Flash and Spoonie Gee to name just a few. Robinson was born in April 16,1916 in South Carolina. For this near-centennial celebration of his life and work, author John Broven, who told Robinson’s story in his 2009 book Record Makers and Breakers: Voices of the Independent Rock ‘n’ Roll Pioneers, will be on hand to share his memories of Bobby Robinson, as will Radio Hofstra’s Gordon Skadberg, musician Bob Malenky, and others. ARSC president Matt Barton will moderate.
