PART ONE: SINGLE SHEET MAPS AND MAPS BOUND IN ATLASES 9 INTRODUCTION TO PART ONE Part One (entries 1 through 1769) provides a list of maps of Ireland from three major collections in the Geography and Map Division: maps from the Titled Map Collection, which were acquired by the Library prior to 1969 and have been unprocessed and uncatalogued; maps bound in atlases from the Rare Atlas Collection that is stored in the Division’s vault; and maps bound in atlases published before 1851 from the General Atlas Collection. In addition, this portion of the bibliography includes maps of Ireland found in several smaller special collections such as those donated to the Library of Congress by Janet Green, Ethel Fair, and Melville Eastam. Most maps acquired after 1968 are computer-cataloged in a system known as MARC (machine readable catalog). Records of these acquisitions are therefore not in this volume. These records are available online or printouts of MARC records may be obtained in person on request at the Library of Congress. The entries are arranged as faithfully as possible to conform with the Library of Congress “G” Classification Schedule for maps and atlases. This arrangement places the numbered entries in the following sequence: UEntry NumberU UArrangement 1-594 and 600-898 Ireland as a geographic unit .......... Chronological 899-938 Northern half of Ireland ................ Chronological 939-982 Southern half of Ireland ................ Chronological 983-1015 Physical regions .............................. Alphabetical 1016-1191 Provinces ......................................... Alphabetical 1192-1259 Counties .......................................... Alphabetical 1260-1569 Cities ............................................... Alphabetical 1570-1731 Coasts .............................................. Alphabetical 1732-1769 Atlases and references books Entries 1-594 and 600-898 chronologically list maps of Ireland depicted as an island in its entirety and published on one sheet. Entries 899-982, also subdivided chronologically, list those maps of Ireland taken from the numerous Mercator, Hondius, and Jansson atlases that show the northern half of the island on one map sheet, entries 899-938, and the southern half of the island on a subsequent map sheet, entries 939-982. Entries 983-1569 cite maps of physical regions, provinces, counties, and cities that may fall within one or both of the present-day political states in Ireland. Consequently, entries 983- 1569 are arranged without regard to the border established between Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State (Eire) in the early 1920s. For example, in the alphabetical listing of maps of cities, entries 1260-1569, entry 1287, a map of Bantry Harbor, Co. Cork (Eire), is followed by entries 1288-1308 for maps of Belfast, Co. Down (Northern Ireland), which are followed by entry 1309 for a map of Bennetts Bridge, Co. Kilkenny (Eire). Where multiple editions of the 10 maps of the same place exist, for example, Belfast, the entries are further subdivided chronologically. Entries 1570-1731, which record single charts of Ireland’s coastal areas published by various European commercial mapmakers (not to be confused with the British Admiralty chart series listed in Part Three of this catalog), are arranged geographically in a general clockwise pattern. Entry 1570 is the first of the group describing coastal maps of the entirety of Ireland’s coasts, and is followed by listings of maps of the northern coast of Ireland, the northeastern coast, the eastern coast, the southeastern coast, etc. These entries are, likewise, further subdivided chronologically within these geographic coastal areas. Entries 1732-1769 describe atlases or reference books devoted exclusively to Ireland, such as Taylor and Skinner’s Maps of the Roads of Ireland, Surveyed in 1777, and Corrected down to 1783, or Samuel Lewis’ A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland. Explanation of the Record Format in Part One Each of the 1,769 entries in Part One includes all or some of the following descriptive elements: 1) Main Entry (author of the map or atlas) 2) Title (of the map, atlas, or reference work) 3) Edition Statement (if given) 4) Imprint (i.e., place of publication, publisher, and date) 5) Collation (dimensions given in height and width by centimeters) 6) Scale Statement 7) Notes (if any) 8) Page or Plate Number of Maps Bound in Atlases 9) Filing Location: “Irish map” file number (if filed in the Titled Map Collection) or LC call number together with assigned Phillips’ number (if bound in an atlas).
