Activity: Color Challenge
Objective: Demonstrate accuracy using a graduated cylinder.
Materials: . 3 beakers with colored water (red, blue, and yellow) . 1 beaker (tap water) . 3 graduated cylinders (various sizes) . 1 pipette . 6 test tubes labeled A, B, C, D, E, and F . 1 test tube rack
Directions: 1. Perform each step outlined below using accurate measurements. Do them in order. 2. Use the pipette for accuracy. 3. Rinse the graduated cylinder using the pipette (after each use) with water to prevent cross- contamination.
Procedure: (1) Measure 17 mL of RED water from the beaker and pour into test tube A. (2) Measure 21 mL of YELLOW water from the beaker and pour into test tube C. (3) Measure 22 mL of BLUE water from the beaker and pour into test tube E. (4) Measure 5 mL of water from test tube A and pour it into test tube B. (5) Measure 6 mL of water from test tube C and pour it into test tube D. (6) Measure 8 mL of water from test tube E and pour it into test tube F. (7) Measure 5 mL of water from test tube C and pour it into test tube B. (8) Measure 2 mL of water from test tube A and pour it into test tube F. (9) Measure 4 mL of water from test tube E and pour it into test tube D. (10) SHOW the teacher the final amounts in the test tubes. (11) Record ALL colors. (12) Pour contents of test tube A into graduated cylinder to get final amount for test tube A. Record answer in table below. (13) Repeat step #12 with the remaining test tubes.
Title: Measuring the ______(___) of ______in ______(A-F)
Test Tube Color Final Volume (___) A B C D E F
Clean up: (1) Pour pure colors back in original beaker and mixed colors in rinse water beaker. (2) Rinse test tube and test tube rack with water. Drain test tubes. (3) Pour rinse water into sink. (4) Refill rinse water beaker ½ way with new water.
