The field acquisition exhibits the performance of different shallow methods in describing the riverbed architectural Barra do Garças facies and shows how each method behaves depending on the kind of interface. All survey lines were run along the main river channel: Responses were acquired at specific sites related to sandy sediments, rocky outcrops and gravel/coarse grain concentrated deposition. The combination of these geophysical data allows discussing methodology to describe geometry of sedimentary structures. Introduction The Araguaia River is the main tributary of Tocantins River, has a drainage area approximately of 380.000 km² and average discharge of 6.100 m³/s. -

Studies in Avian Biology No. 19:272-280, 1999. SEASONAL MOVEMENTS AND CONSERVATION OF SEEDEATERS OF THE GENUS SPOROPHZIA IN SOUTH AMERICA Jose MARIA CARDOSO DA SILVA Abstract. Small seed-eating finches of the genus Sporophila, commonly called seedeaters, are among the most characteristic elements of South Americas’ grassland avifauna. Twenty-three species of Spa- rophila seedeaters were classified into three groups according to their seasonal movements. Fourteen species make long-distance movements between at least two major ecological regions in South Amer- ica, four species make intermediate to long-distance movements within a single ecological region, and five species make short-distance movements between adjacent habitats. The grasslands in the Cerrado region seem to be the most important wintering sites for most of the long-distance migrant Sporophila. Mapping the ranges of all threatened or near-threatened Sporophila species identified seven critical areas between southern coastal Colombia and southernmost Brazil. Creating reserves in these seven areas would protect at least one population of 23 Sporophilu species. Mapping the ranges of all species and well-marked subspecies with restricted ranges (350,000 square kilometers or less) identified nine critical areas (five of which were also identified by mapping threatened or near-threatened species) between northern South America and southernmost Brazil. Creating reserves in these nine areas would protect populations of 29 species or well-defined subspecies of Sporophila.The conservation of South American grasslands needs urgent action. The areas identified here are important grassland habitats that should be priority areas for organizations and agencies interested in grassland conservation. Montaldo Received: 23 July 2010 / Accepted: 15 July 2011 / Published online: 24 July 2011 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011 Abstract In this paper we summarize for the first time the effects of agriculture expansion and intensification on animal diversity in the Pampas of Argentina and discuss research needs for biodiversity conservation in the area. The Pampas experienced little human intervention until the last decades of the 19th century. Agriculture expanded quickly during the 20th century, transforming grasslands into cropland and pasture lands and converting the landscape into a mosaic of natural fragments, agricultural fields, and linear habitats. In the 1980s, agriculture intensification and replacement of cattle grazing- cropping systems by continuous cropping promoted a renewed homogenisation of the most productive areas. Birds and carnivores were more strongly affected than rodents and insects, but responses varied within groups: (a) the geographic ranges and/or abundances of many native species were reduced, including those of carnivores, herbivores, and specialist species (grassland-adapted birds and rodents, and probably specialized pollinators), sometimes leading to regional extinction (birds and large carnivores), (b) other native species were unaffected (birds) or benefited (bird, rodent and possibly generalist pollinator and crop-associated insect species), (c) novel species were introduced, thus increasing species richness of most groups (26% of non-rodent mammals, 11.1% of rodents, 6.2% of birds, 0.8% of pollinators). -

Proposta de Delimitação Territorial do MATOPIBA | 2 1. UMA NOVA FRONTEIRA AGRÍCOLA A expressão MATOPIBA resulta de um acrônimo criado com as iniciais dos estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia. Existem outras denominações equivalentes, menos utilizadas como MAPITOBA, por exemplo. Essa expressão designa uma realidade geográfica que recobre parcialmente os quatro estados mencionados, caracterizada pela expansão de uma fronteira agrícola baseada em tecnologias de alta produtividade. As mudanças no uso e ocupação das terras no MATOPIBA possuem características diferenciadas em relação ao que foi, por exemplo, o processo de expansão da agricultura na calha sul da Amazônia, nas décadas de 1970 e 1980, marcado pelo desmatamento. Essa ocupação caracterizou-se inicialmente, por um uso agropecuário das terras de baixa produtividade, tanto no caso dos pequenos agricultores (projetos de colonização e assentamentos agrários), como nos grandes empreendimentos de pecuária. No caso do MATOPIBA, salvo algumas exceções, não ocorreram desmatamentos significativos e sim mudanças no uso e na condição fundiária das terras. As pastagens nativas extensivas e tradicionais, em áreas de campos e cerrados, são substituídas por culturas anuais intensificadas com novas tecnologias de produção, incluindo a irrigação. E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT: The Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) is the second largest Brazilian biome (204 million hectares) and due to its location in the Brazilian Central Plateau it plays an important role in terms of water production and distribution throughout the country. Eight of the twelve Brazilian hydrographic regions receive water from this Biome. It contributes to more than 90% of the discharge of the São Francisco River, 50% of the Paraná River, and 70% of the Tocantins River. Therefore, the Cerrado is a strategic region for the national hydropower sector, being responsible for more than 50% of the Brazilian hydroelectricity production. Furthermore, it has an outstanding relevance in the national agricultural scenery. Despite of the relatively abundance of water in most of the region, water conflicts are beginning to arise in some areas. The objective of this paper is to discuss the economical and ecological relevance of the water resources of the Cerrado. Key-words: Brazilian savanna; water management; water conflicts. INTRODUCTION The Cerrado is the second largest Brazilian biome in extension, with about 204 million hectares, occupying 24% of the national territory approximately. Duncan, an avowed antbird fanatic, contacted me after having come to the conclusion that he could no longer ignore the Rio Roosevelt given the recent batch of antbird splits and new taxa coming from the Madeira – Tapajós interfluvium. We had touched on the subject during his previous trips in Brazil, having also toyed with the idea of including an expedition-style extension to search for Brazil's biggest mega when it comes to antbirds – the Rondônia Bushbird. After some back and forth in the first two months of the following year, an e-mail came through from Duncan which ended thusly: “statement of the bleedin’ obvious: I would SERIOUSLY like to see the Bushbird.” At which point the game was on, so to speak. We began to organize an itinerary for the Rio Roosevelt with a dedicated expedition for Rondonia Bushbird. By mid-year things were coming together for a September trip, but in August we were de-railed by a minor health problem and two participants being forced to back out at the last minute. With a bushbird in the balance, we weren't about to call the whole thing off, and thus a new itinerary sans Roosevelt was hatched for 2015, an itinerary which called for about a week in the Tabajara area on the southern border of the Campos Amazônicos National Park, followed by a few days on the west bank of the rio Madeira to go for a couple of Duncan's targets in that area.
