"Dr. Phil" Mcgraw
"Dr. Phil" McGraw He has swept the country as the guru of modern straight-shooting psychology. He had a rather humble beginning, but a chance meeting with famous afternoon television star, Oprah Winfrey, sent him on the road to fame. His hit TV show, Dr. Phil, has been making headlines and breaking records since its September, 2002 launch, when it garnered the highest ratings of any new syndicated show since the launch of The Oprah Winfrey Show 16 years prior. People magazine named Dr. Phil one of the "Most Intriguing People of 2002," while Barbara Walters included him in her 2002 "Ten Most Fascinating People" special. Newsweek dedicated a September 2002 cover story to Dr. Phil, which turned out to be the magazine's best-selling profile cover of the year. He is one of the world's most recognized experts in the strategy and management of life. Philip McGraw was born September 1, 1950 fifteen minutes before the kickoff of the first high school football game his father ever coached. His father also worked as an oil salesman and a psychologist, which probably had a lot to do with his success today in psychology. He played high school football, didn't like classes much and "cruised around" town in his Mustang. McGraw attended Tulsa University on a football scholarship, but an eye injury forced him to give up the game and he left Tulsa after his freshman year. Phil returned to college, enrolling at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He eventually got his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas. -

TELEMEDICINE’S Tipping Point Written by Bruce Shuntan Virtual visits seen as growing part of more aggressive employee engagement strategies for self- funded health plans Some medical visionaries, entrepreneurs and researchers believe the future of health care delivery is telemedicine, also known as telehealth, while skeptics label virtual visits between patients and providers impractical for certain cases and a threat to quality of care. An Open Letter in Support of Joe Berlinger and the Documentary Filmmaking Team of "Crude"
May 12, 2010 An open letter in support of Joe Berlinger and the documentary filmmaking team of "Crude" As members of the documentary film community, we the undersigned strongly object to the Honorable Judge Lewis A. Kaplan's ruling last week in the case involving our colleague Joe Berlinger, the Chevron Corporation, and Berlinger's 600 hours of raw footage shot during production of his documentary film "Crude". Judge Kaplan sided with Chevron and ruled that Berlinger must turn over all of his raw footage to Chevron for their use in the lawsuit discussed in the film. Berlinger and his legal team plan to appeal the ruling. In cases such as these involving access to a journalist's work material, whether they involve a newspaper or online reporter, a radio interviewer, a television news producer, or a documentary filmmaker, it is understood that First Amendment protection of the journalist's privilege is never absolute. Typically, if such privilege is successfully rebutted in court, a turn-over order demanding a document or other thing is issued and the journalist must comply or face the consequences. Therefore, it is astounding to us that Judge Kaplan demanded that all of the footage shot during the production of the film be handed over to the attorneys of Chevron, given that the privilege exists primarily to protect against the wholesale exposure of press files to litigant scrutiny. While we commend Judge Kaplan for stating "that the qualified journalists' privilege applies to Berlinger's raw footage", we are nonetheless dismayed both by Chevron's attempts to go on a "fishing expedition" into the edit rooms and production offices of a fellow documentary filmmaker without any particular cause or agenda, and the judge's allowance of said intentions. -
Fostering Artistry and Pedagogy: Conversations with Artist-Teachers Frederick Hemke, Eugene Rousseau, and Donald Sinta
FOSTERING ARTISTRY AND PEDAGOGY: CONVERSATIONS WITH ARTIST-TEACHERS FREDERICK HEMKE, EUGENE ROUSSEAU, AND DONALD SINTA by Julia Nolan A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Curriculum Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2012 © Julia Nolan, 2012 ABSTRACT This research presents three case studies that explore university teachers in the private music studio and in the master class setting, framed by one central question: how do artist-teachers articulate, negotiate, and give shape to their pedagogical practices about artistry and interpretation within the context of private music education? The cases focus on saxophone artist-teachers Frederick Hemke at Northwestern University, Eugene Rousseau at the University of Minnesota, and Donald Sinta at the University of Michigan. I analyzed instrumental music performance teaching and learning from the perspective of the three artist-teachers. The data collected from interviews, observations, and my personal narratives provide a rich resource for the analysis of the professional lives of master musicians, their pedagogies, and their thoughts about artistry in music performance and instruction. Interviews with many of the artist-teachers’ students also informed my analysis. More important, this study connects present and future saxophonists by capturing the voices of recognized artist-teachers about artistry and pedagogy. Central to this thesis are the discovery of how little has changed in the concepts of artistry and pedagogy over time and across the evolution of musical styles, and recognition of the power of the strong bonds that connect generations of students with their teachers and their teachers’ teachers.
