IDA’s Career Achievement Award recognizes an individual whose body of work has made a significant impact on the documentary genre.
ROBERT REDFORD IS AN ACCLAIMED FILMMAKER and actor, ardent conservationist and environmentalist, and founder of the world-renowned Sundance Institute, dedicated to the support and development of independent film and theatre artists, and its Documentary Film Program, a leading creative and financial resource for contemporary-issue nonfiction filmmakers worldwide. Redford’s award winning work as actor, director, and producer spans genres and formats and includes some of the most iconic cinematic achievements of our time. In a 2012 interview with NPR, Redford said “I was very influenced in my own career with the effect of documentaries from Emile de Antonio, Pennebaker, Leacock, [and the] Maysles brothers. I was very impressed with the feeling of ‘you’re there’— the live energy in the moment that they portrayed.” His work in documentary film began with the Academy Award® nominated short The Solar Film, and includes the award- winning Yosemite: Fate of Heaven, and feature documentaries Incident at Oglala and The Unforeseen. In 2012, Redford formed Sundance Productions, and nonfiction work produced under its banner includes the Emmy® nominated All The President’s Men Revisited, nonfiction seriesChicagoland and Death Row Stories for CNN, and the 3D Cathedrals of Culture with executive producer Wim Wenders.

CAMBODIAN FILMMAKER RITHY PANH, whose documentary The Missing Picture was nominated in 2013 for the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film, co-founded, along with filmmaker Ieu Pannakar, the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center in Phnom Penh. Established in 2006, it is the repository for film, television, photography and sound archives on Cambodia, drawn from around the world. Visitors can access these materials free of charge. The Center also provides filmmaking training and produces “modern audiovisual creation, filmmaking and multimedia.” “At first, we thought we could just create a library,” says Panh in an interview with Documentary magazine. “But as our vision and mission refined itself, we realized our goals were much bigger than that… Ten years later, the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center was realized and given to the people to explore their heritage. “Many more films are no doubt scattered across the world.” Panh continues. “I think of all the expertise and knowledge that was wiped out… and how now we are struggling to rebuild. If we don’t try to access and preserve our memory, it means the millions dead will stay only a statistic with no face, no name, no story.”
IDA’s Preservation and Scholarship award recognizes individuals or organizations that have made notable contributions to preserving significant motion picture archives and educating the public and industry about the role nonfiction filmmaking plays in society.

Stay tuned for the latest news about French cinema! uniFranceFilms @uniFrance Promoting French cinema worldwide 28 emerging documentary filmmaker award sponsored by Red Fire Films and Modern VideoFilm Darius Clark Monroe
HOUSTON NATIVE, DARIUS CLARK MONROE is an award- winning filmmaker and MFA graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He’s a National Board of Review, HBO Short Film, and Urbanworld Best Screenplay award recipient. Monroe’s feature debut, Evolution of a Criminal, tells the story of a young man’s decision to rob a bank in order to save his family from a cycle of debilitating poverty. It is in fact Monroe’s personal story of his own past, which he determined to reveal while a student at NYU. “Eventually, I had to … just tell the only story I knew, and that was my own,” Monroe told Documentary magazine. “I understood that within my experience, people would hopefully see themselves. In America, my family is one of millions…living paycheck to paycheck, worrying and wanting to support one’s family, seeking forgiveness and struggling with guilt, being judged for past mis- takes, hoping and yearning for more compassion, and the resilience of humanity—these are all universal themes and circumstances.” Evolution of a Criminal has garnered several awards, and will air on Independent Lens in 2015. The recipient of the Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award receives $5,000 in cash and a donation of post-production services valued at $50,000, made possible by Red Fire Films and Modern VideoFilm.
The Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award recognizes the achievements of a filmmaker who has made a significant impact at the beginning of his or her career in documentary film.
