Free Riddims Download What Is a Riddim? free riddims download What is a riddim? "Riddim" is the Jamaican Patois pronunciation of the English word "Rhythm". Riddims are mainly used for Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, Lovers Rock, Dub and Raggamuffin music. Most music in those genres consists of an instrumental part and a vocal part. The instrumental part is called the riddim and the vocal part is called the voicing . Together they form a song, also called a tune . The usage of riddims started in the early 1960's and new riddims are produced up until today. The first riddims were recorded in studios. Most studios had their own house band with a wide variety of musicians. Halfway the 1980s, the usage of synthesizers and drum machines became more common, and the digital riddim was born. It is very common for the same riddim to be used by different artists for different tunes. A given riddim, if popular, may even be used hundreds of times. In the early days the riddims were simply named after the most popular tunes that were recorded over them. Since the 1980's, however, riddims started to be given their own unique names by their producers. What is Riddim-ID? Riddim-ID is essentially an actively maintained database that contains information about all the different riddims and the tunes that were recorded over them. Besides that, there is also detailed information about artists, producers, labels and riddim albums. To learn more about Riddim-ID and the sources it is using, take a look at the About page. Werden-Greenfield All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Since the early 1970’s, Rastafari has enjoyed public notoriety disproportionate to the movement’s size and humble origins in the slums of Kingston, Jamaica roughly forty years earlier. Yet, though numerous academics study Rastafari, a certain lacuna exists in contemporary scholarship in regards to the movement’s scriptural basis. By interrogating Rastafari’s recovery of the Hebrew Bible from colonial powers and Rastas’ adoption of an Israelite identity, this dissertation illuminates the biblical foundation of Rastafari ethics and symbolic registry. An analysis of the body of scholarship on Rastafari, as well as of the reggae canon, reveals

  • Prejudice and Homophobic Violence in Jamaica
FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER HUMAN RIGHTS F ALL:2004 WHAT HAPPENED TO “ONE LOVE”? PREJUDICE AND HOMOPHOBIC VIOLENCE IN JAMAICA In May 2004, Amnesty International issued a report documenting a serious pattern of homophobic violence in Jamaica. The violence ranges from vigilante attacks to torture and ill-treatment by police. And there appears to be little or no accountability for these human rights abuses. Exhortations to kill and maim lesbian and gay people can even be found in the lyrics of a number of popular Jamaican dancehall artists, such as Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Buju Banton—a radical departure from Reggae’s musical tradition of preaching “one love” and social justice. Amnesty has called on the Jamaican government to institute law reform and other steps to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Jamaicans from discrimination and violence. The brutal murder in June of Brian Williamson, prominent gay activist and a founding member of J-FLAG (Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays), and the recent campaign by some LGBT activists calling for the boycott of those Jamaican Reggae stars spouting hate lyrics ignited intense public debate and media interest. In this issue, we talk to the program manager of J-FLAG about the situation for the LGBT community in Jamaica, and what he thinks can be done to address discrimination and violence against LGBT people. We are withholding the name of our interviewee to honor his request to remain anonymous due to fear for his own safety. UTfront: Give us a sense of the conditions of LGBT rights in Jamaica.

  • Syllabus—Rastafari: Dread, Politics, Agency
RASTAFARI: DREAD, POLITICS, AGENCY Instructor: Dr. Neil Roberts Spring 2009 Williams College AFR302.01/ PSCI234.01/ Mon/Th, 2:35-3:50 PM REL261.01 Office: x4772, NAB 213 Office hours: Tu, 1:00-3:00 PM [email protected] Course description: The emergence of Rastafari in the twentieth-century marked a distinct phase in the theory and practice of political agency. From its heretical roots in Jamaica, Garveyism, Ethiopianism, and Pan-Africanism, Rastafari has evolved from a Caribbean theological movement to an international political actor. This course investigates the political theory of Rastafari in order to develop intellectual resources for theorizing the concept of agency in contemporary Africana thought and political theory. We will analyze texts and audio-visual works on the political economy of late colonial Jamaica, core Rastafari thinking, political theology, the role of reggae music, the notion of agency, and the influence of Rastafari on global politics. Island Voices Reggae & New Jamaican Music Connect to the heart of Jamaica through music... the music that frees people’s souls. By Dona Omanoff and Fureus “Jamaicans have music within them. They are born with it… That is the whole essence why the music has risen up. It’s a music spiritually, telepathically, metaphysically, vibrating in the wind…” From RiseUP an award-winning film by Luciano Blotta “Island Voices Reggae & New Jamaican Music” is proud to be an official product of the 50th Anniversary Celebration & Jubilee 1962 to 2012 50th Anniversary Jamaica: Official Song “On A Mission” by Shaggy & Various Artists You are reading the PDF version of the book. We are providing the PDF version to reviewers, media and others who may not be able to read the intended file formats which are EPUB (iBooks and other readaers) or MOBI (Amazon) file. Those files “reflow” the text according to the device reading the book. The PDF file will have page breaks that are not elegant. Also, the Table of Contents in the PDF file may seem out of order, but it’s done intentionally as the EPUB and MOBI files displays two Table of Contents and we made them different on purpose for the e-readers. Hope that makes sense. Call Dona with any other concerns at 561.309.9621. Thank you. Copyright Authored by Dona Omanoff and Fureus Dona Omanoff is an American technologist, photographer and writer. The Rastafarian movement has experienced fast growth during recent years in South Africa and especially in the province of Western Cape. This article examines this process through an ethnographic account of a weekly reggae dancehall event held by the Rastafarian Marcus Garvey community in the township of Philippi in Cape Town. During the course of three months of fieldwork the author investigated how recorded Jamaican dancehall music is used in the community and how it is articulated to different Rastafarian identifications within the dancehall space. Several scholars of Rastafari have suggested that contemporary Jamaican dancehall music has had theological impact on the Rastafarian movement, particularly outside of the Caribbean. The article provides an empirical contribution to these discussions by demonstrating that Rastafarians in the Marcus Garvey community have made significant innovations both theologically and musically in relation to their Jamaican counterparts, reorienting contemporary Jamaican popular music as a spiritual practice linked to religious purity norms informed by an international Rastafarian organization, the Nyabinghi Order. As a result Jamaican dancehall music is taking a central position in various moral negotiations within the Marcus
