W 2-1 GUSTAVUS EMBARKS ON 72ND SEASON OF MEN’S HOCKEY The Gustavus men’s hockey team is currently in its 72nd season of existence. VS. ST. THOMAS One of the storied programs in collegiate hockey, Gustavus has compiled an All-Time 59-63-8 all-time record of 833-611-64 overall and 551-421-41 in the MIAC. Gustavus Last Meeting W 1-0 (2/23/13) first recognized a men’s hockey team in 1937 when then Director of Physical Current Streak W - 1 Education George Myrum became interested in the sport and raised the funds to sponsor a team. The Gusties fell to Carleton in their first ever Head Coach Brett Petersen intercollegiate game in 1936. It would take until 1939, the first year Gustavus Record at Gustavus 182-141-28 played on natural ice in the on-campus fieldhouse, for Gustavus to record the first victory in the program’s history. vs. St. Thomas 10-20-2 Head Coach Je" Boeser GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF Record at St. Thomas 45-27-6 Head Coach Brett Petersen is in his 14th season at the helm of the Gustavus vs. Gustavus 5-2-0 men’s hockey program. That is absolutely the case with the Fresno Monsters, who have dropped five of six games to start the year despite playing well almost every time out. Fresno’s first two series to open the season were against Long Beach and Valencia, the top two clubs in the Western Division last year. After dropping their first five games, which included three one-goal contests, the Monsters took their frustration out on previously undefeated Valencia in an 11-3 blowout victory. Forwards Cody Key and Daylon Mannon share the early team lead in goals with six apiece. Mannon owns the edge in assists with six compared to four for Key. Goaltender Adam Barvik has been played much better than his 0-3-0 record would indicate. He owns a .921 save percentage while leading the team in ice time. Fresno will look to build some momentum from its big win over Valencia this weekend when it travels to San Diego for a three-game series against the winless Sabers.     WSHL WEEKLY NOTES 11.07.18 – WESTERN DIVISION FRESNO MONSTERS (6-4-0, 18 pts) @WSHLMonsters www.FresnoMonsters.com The Fresno Monsters played a single game last week, travelling to Valencia on Friday. Martin Dlugolinsky and Stanislav Danaev each scored twice in the game for the Monsters, and Cole Beckman’s goal in the final minute of the third period secured a 5-3 win over the Flyers. It also marked the Monsters debut of their new goaltender, WSHL veteran Tyler Mathews. Mathews, who made 28 saves to pick up the win, has had previous stints in the WSHL with Salt Lake City and Idaho. The 19-year-old began the season with the Maryland Black Bears of the NAHL and provides Fresno head coach Kevin Kaminski with another option between the pipes. Max Karlenzig has been a workhorse, playing the first nine games and getting solid results (5-4-0/3.29/.907), but having two established veterans can be a huge plus over a 52-game season in a very competitive division like the Western. Case in point – the Monsters play three-in-three at division leader Long Beach starting Thursday, so it will be interesting to see how Kaminski splits up the starts for his goaltending tandem.
