In Dr. Richard L. Osburn addition to its 850-acre campus in Boca Raton, FA U has University Provost and Chief Academic Officer campuses in Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Dania Beach, Jupiter and Port St. Lucie. Schmidt College of Science-offer 76 Dr. Larry F. Lemanski Vice President for Research bachelor's, 68 master's, 3 specialist's and 17 doctoral degrees. As Mr. Robert M. Friedman of December 2001, the University had awarded 84,462 degrees. University Architect and Vice President In December 1967, Florida Atlantic University was elected to Dr. Dorothy Leland Campus Vice President, regular membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Boca Raton Schools. At that time the Commission on Higher Education of Dr. Joyanne Stephens the Southern Association granted full accreditation to all of the Campus Vice President, Davie University's programs. In accordance with Association Dr. Kenneth Wiant regulations, this accreditation was reaffirmed in 1972,1982,1992 Campus Vice President, and2002. Fort Lauderdale and Dania Beach Dr. Robert Huckshom Campus Vice President, In the fall of 2001, the University registered more than 25,000 Jupiter students and had 1,000 faculty members. ANrnoNY TAMEs CATANESE Dr. Anthony James Catanese joined Florida Atlantic University as its fourth President in January 1990. Dr. Catanese previously was the Provost of Pratt Institute in New York City; Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Florida; Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Professor and Director of the Center for Planning and Development at the Georgia Institute of Technology; and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering and Environmental Design and James A. Ryder Professor at the University of Miami. Dr. Catanese also was a Senior Fulbright Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. Dr. Catanese is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He previously maintained a private practice in design, planning and development. His consulting contracts numbered over 50 clients on projects that included coastal zone planning and development in Hawaii and native land claims in Alaska. As a developer, he built several projects for the single-family and multi-family markets in the Atlanta region. Dr. Catanese has been a public servant as well. He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the National Urban Policy Task Force. He served as Chairman of the Milwaukee City Plan Board and Chairman of the Gainesville City Plan Board. Dr. Catanese was president of the Park West Development Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that planned and developed a major area of Milwaukee. Dr. Catanese currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Governor's Commission for Sustainable Florida, AVMED, Wachovia Bank, the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities and the Orange Bowl Committee. He has served on the Presidents' Commission of the National Collegiate Athletics Association. He is the current President of the Florida State University Presidents' Association and the Atlantic Sun Athletics Conference. A strong advocate of public/ private partnerships and innovative management, Dr. Catanese has guided FAU's growth with entrepreneurial vigor. He was named the 1995 Business Leader of the Year by the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce; the 1995 Down towner of the Year by the Downtown Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce; the 1996 Broward County Leader of the Year by the Leadership Broward Foundation; and was given the 1997 Hall of Fame Award by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. In 1998 Dr. Catanese was inducted into the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame. Most recently, he received four exceptionally high honors: the Chief Executive Leadership Award for outstanding performance by a University President presented by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education; the Excalibur Award for outstanding leadership presented by the Sun-Sentinel; the Silver Medallion Award of the National Conference for Community and Justice; and the Diversity Champion Award presented by the Urban League of Broward County. Dr. Catanese received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Planning and Land Economics; the master's degree in Planning and Public Administration from New York University; and the bachelor's degree in Planning and Civil Engineering from Rutgers University. He has conducted advanced studies in real estate finance, computers and transportation. A prolific writer, Dr. Catanese has authored 13 books, 18 book chapters, more than 65 articles in journals and 35 research monographs. Two of his books, Planners and Politics: Impos sible Dreams and Urban Planning, have been best-sellers in their field.
