As of December 2002, the University had Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies awarded 89.146 degrees. Mr. Robert M. Jupiter Dr. Gerald F. Lafferty Campus Vice President. Treasure Coast 2 UNIVER_SITY FRANK T. BROGAN' PRESIDENT Frank T. Brogan became the fifth president of Florida Atlantic University in March 2003. Before becoming president of FAU . he served as the 15th lieutenant governor of the state of Florida. A native of Cincinnati. President Brogan and his twin brother. John. are the youngest of six children. By earning a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Cincinnati. President Brogan became the first member of his family to graduate from college. His love of learning would eventually lead him to Florida. where he earned a master's in education from Florida Atlantic University. Throughout his professional career. President Brogan has been a champion for Florida's public schools. His philosophy is simply that all children can learn. and that schools must be held accountable for ensuring that learning is provided in a safe and friendly environment. As a former fifth grade teacher. dean of students. principal and superintendent of schools in Martin County. President Brogan speaks from experience. He is familiar with the challenges and opportunities that face our public schools. Elected in 1994 as Florida's youngest commissioner of education. President Brogan made his mark as a staunch supporter of higher academic standards. the development of second chance or alternative schools and the right of teachers to remove disruptive students from their classrooms. His most important legacy as commissioner was bringing greater accountability to Florida schools. During his tenure as lieutenant governor. he was the legislative liaison for Governor Jeb Bush and helped ensure that "promises kept" could be stamped on the platform issues on which he and the Governor ran. The outcomes of policies implemented during President Brogan's tenure as lieutenant governor include reduction of violent crime to a 28-year low in 2000: environmental protection. including the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan: serving the needs of Florida's most vulnerable citizens. especially our children. frail elders and the developmentally disabled: and tax relief of nearly $6 billion. ln addition to serving as a champion for education and children. President Brogan has served as a leader for other important causes. During the past few years. he has become especially involved in the fight against cancer- a disease that claimed the life of his first wife. Mary. For his work. he has received a public service award from the Pioneers in Prostate Cancer and has used his remarkable speaking ability to crusade in the fight against breast cancer. He currently serves as the statewide chairman of Florida's Dialogue on Cancer. President Brogan is married to Courtney S.
