Thursday June 3, 2021 $1 VAT Inclusive Dairy industry holding its own despite challenges By Marsha Gittens

THE local dairy industry continues to hold its own in the current economic environment, even though dairy farmers face some challenges. Word of this came from Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, who spoke to The Barbados Advocate on Tuesday, which was observed as World Milk Day. Outlining one high point for the industry, Paul said dairy farmers “are beginning to see the benefits” from the 159 pregnant heifers which were imported into the island last year. They were imported through a joint project of the BAS and the Barbados Minister of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Kerrie Symmonds (centre), unveils the plaque officially opening the Beef and Dairy Producers’ building. BORDER REOPENING: Colombia yesterday began what its government called a gradual opening of its border with Venezuela after a 14-month closure intended to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Colombia, whose porous bor- der with Venezuela extends roughly 1,380 miles (2,220 km), has been the chief destination for Venezuelans fleeing their country’s social and economic crisis. The two countries do not maintain diplomatic relations. The gradual opening of river and land crossings was autho- rised starting at midnight on Wednesday, according to a resolution published by the Andean nation’s interior min- istry. The interior ministry said biosecurity measures in light of the COVID-19 pandemic es- tablished by Colombia’s health ministry must be followed dur- ing crossings. Fears of environmental disaster as oil-laden ship sinks off Sri Lanka

A CHEMICAL-LADEN cargo ship is sinking off the coast of Sri Lanka, sparking fears of an environmental disas- ter. The Singapore-registered X- Press Pearl had been on fire for almost two weeks before the blaze was put out this week. Hundreds of tonnes of oil from fuel tanks could leak into the sea if it sinks, devastating nearby marine life. The Sri Lankan and Indian navies had worked jointly over the past days in an attempt to put out the fire and prevent the ship from breaking up and sink- ing. P R O HOROSCOPES S A Aries - The timing of a new scheme will be bizarre. N People cannot see what the advantages will be. The D money will be better spent on established schemes that help the community. The question you might ask, when C developing a new project is: how can this achieve what O was previously impossible? N S Taurus - Having your talents and contributions to a group acknowledged will boost your confidence. When you look forward to going into work every day, you know you have found your ideal job. Whether you are using skills you've worked hard to acquire or you're working with children or animals, when you do what you love, the money will follow.

Gemini - You know how lonely life can be after recent Z lockdowns. You want to be able to help others. Whether I it is bus trips for the elderly or getting people out into a space where they can meet others and talk about any- T thing, this project will be met with enthusiasm. Dust off S those childhood dreams. It is never too late to realise your potential.

Cancer - Launching a website can bring a special proj- ect favourable publicity. Raising money for a special cause will be a good use of your skills and talents. There are ways around problems when organising a group event. Staggering start times and splitting the event into time slots could work well in the circum- R stances. E X Leo - Participating in events that bring people together will bring you most fulfilment. In a competitive effort, the results are important but not the be all and end all. M You would love to win every game and you intend to O prove yourself in certain areas but it is the joy of get- R ting together with others that means most to you. G A Virgo - It is time to seriously look at how you might free N yourself from a restricting relationship or difficult sit- uation. Ask for help if you aren't sure about how you might go about this. You can't keep giving in to some- one because you are too sensitive or polite to stand up for yourself.

Libra - Summon your strength to deal with a difficult situation on your own. You had hoped to have had the P support of friends and colleagues who you have helped H out in the past. They may not be able to do so in which case don't hold this against them. You got yourself into A this situation and it's up to you to find a way out of it. N T Scorpio - A story that makes the headlines will touch O your heart. There are others around you that will find it M meaningful too. If you are hoping to get involved in a community project you need also to confirm you can keep up with your normal responsibilities. It will be im- portant to you to give your time to a new community scheme.

Sagittarius - A successful friend will help you find the courage to take steps to improve your social circum- M stances. A situation that is causing upset and frustration A needs to be changed. It doesn't matter if you are becom- ing a nuisance in your efforts to turn this situation R around. People are starting to listen and soon you will Y be pleased with the results. W Capricorn - Your approach to a new scheme may be O what is preventing you from moving forward. You have a long list of why you can't make a start on this project. R Instead of making lists of what you have to overcome, T you should be looking at all the reasons to get this ven- H ture started. Sometimes being too cautious and careful can be a stumbling block on its own.

Aquarius - A project aimed to bring people together to feel a sense of connection has been stalled. Money lies M at the root of the problem. An inventive approach will O help you find a way to move forward. You have learned T a lot from past experiences and look forward to a future H when you can put difficulties behind you and move to E a happier place. R

Pisces - You may have to dip into your savings if you G have to pay a few unexpected bills. If you have no O money put aside, a caring relative might offer to help O out. You might feel embarrassed about accepting this help but it would mean a lot to them if you accepted this S offer. E Tridents ready to take on Dominican Republic Page 17
