FC Porto v Arsenal FC MATCH PRESS KIT Estádio do Dragão, Porto Wednesday, 6 December 2006 - 20:45CET Group G - Matchday 6

FC Porto and Arsenal FC are level on ten points going into their final game in Group G and if their meeting in the Estádio do Dragão ends all square they will be able to stage a joint qualifying celebration. A draw would take both sides through to the knockout rounds even if PFC CSKA Mosvka, who start the evening two points behind, win their last game away to Hamburger SV.

• In the event of all three teams finishing on eleven points a superior goal difference in the matches involving them means Arsenal would win the section with Porto second and the Moscow team left to compete in the UEFA Cup. A victory for either side in Portugal would leave their opponents missing out on the next stage should CSKA win for the third time in the section.

• The balance in the group shifted considerably with Porto's stirring victory two weeks ago at the Lokomotiv Stadium. Goals in each half from Ricardo Quaresma and captain Lucho González inflicted a first loss of the campaign on CSKA while giving a huge shot in the arm to the Portuguese champions' hopes.

• After starting the campaign with a scoreless home draw and a defeat in London, Jesualdo Ferreira's team have reeled off three successive wins. If they make it four they will go through as group winners and make up for last season when they finished bottom of their section after just one win and two draws from their six games.

Henry milestone • The Matchday 2 game between the sides at Ashburton Grove, Arsenal's first in their new home in the competition proper, went the English team's way from the 38th minute when Thierry Henry notched his 50th goal in European competition. Henry then turned provider, setting up Aleksandr Hleb to score the second. However a yellow card two weeks ago rules the Arsenal captain - the Gunners' five-goal leading scorer as they progressed to last season's final - out of the game in Portugal.

• Porto, twice European Champion Clubs' Cup winners, will also be encouraged by their record against English visitors. They have remained unbeaten in seven, winning four and drawing three. Victories by the same 2-1 scoreline came in both their last two contests, against Manchester United FC in the 2003/04 first knockout round first leg as José Mourinho's side gathered momentum on their way to being crowned champions. Then the following year, against Chelsea FC and with Mourinho now on the other side, Porto beat the London club 2-1 at home in the group stage.

Late drama • For some time on Matchday 5, as Arsenal struggled to overturn Hamburg's early lead, it looked like a qualifying place was slipping away from the hosts. Robin van Persie (52) did eventually wipe out Rafael van der Vaart's strike but only in the final seven minutes did Emmanuel Eboué and Julio Baptista secure a significant win.

• Arsenal have only played one other UEFA tie in Portugal. It came in the 1991/92 European Cup second round when they gained a 1-1 first-leg draw at SL Benfica. However, they went on to lose the home match 3-1.

UEFA club competition milestones • The 2005/06 season saw Arsenal advance to the European Champion Clubs' Cup final for the first time although they had previously been involved in both UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup finals. Their finest UEFA Champions League campaign culminated on 17 May 2006 with a 2-1 defeat by FC Barcelona, after Sol Campbell had given the London club the lead in Paris.

• Arsenal played in three UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals, triumphing in the 1993/94 season when they overcame Parma FC 1-0 thanks to Alan Smith's 22nd-minute goal. The other finals ended in narrow defeats by Valencia CF and Real Zaragoza in 1979/80 and 1994/95 respectively. Following their elimination from the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League at the end of the group stage, Arsenal advanced to the UEFA Cup final only to lose on penalties to Galatasaray SK at Copenhagen's Parken stadium.

2005/06 season Domestic record: Arsenal's impressive late run saw them leapfrog Tottenham Hotspur FC to finish fourth in the English Premiership. Although finishing 24 points behind champions Chelsea FC, it was enough to earn a place in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, the first time they had not entered the competition directly.

European record: As one of the 16 automatic qualifiers, Arsenal breezed through the group stage with five victories from their opening five engagements. The only blemish to their record came on Matchday 6 when they were held to a scoreless draw by AFC Ajax. They then saw off Real Madrid CF in the first knockout round, 1-0 on aggregate, before a 2-0 two-legged result defeated Juventus in the quarter-finals. Villarreal CF were beaten 1-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals to take Arsenal through to the final at the Stade de France, where they lost 2-1 to Barcelona.

Match facts

Porto

• Seven Porto players have featured in all five UEFA Champions League matches to date: Helton, Pepe, Bruno Alves, Ricardo Quaresma, Lucho González, Lisandro López and Hélder Postiga. Of those, Helton, Pepe, Bruno Alves and Lucho González have played all 450 minutes so far.

• Vítor Baía is by a distance the most experienced member of the Porto squad having played in 56 UEFA Champions League matches and 108 in total in all UEFA club competition. The goalkeeper has not featured so far this season, however, with Brazilian Helton taking his bow both in the UEFA Champions League and European competition against CSKA on Matchday 1 and remaining ever present since then.

• Vítor Baía aside, only Bosingwa and Postiga of the Porto squad have made 20 or more appearances in Europe's premier cup competition with 29 and 20 to their names from a total of 42 and 35 matches respectively in UEFA club competition. Quaresma would reach the 20-game mark should he appear on Matchday 6.

• Helton was one of five Porto players to make their debut in the UEFA Champions League proper on Matchday 1; the others were Ezequias, Anderson, Tarik Sektioui and Adriano. In addition, coach Jesualdo Ferreira was on the touchline for the first time in a UEFA Champions League group stage match.

• Fucile and Vieirinha made their first appearances in UEFA club competition against Hamburg on Matchday 3.

• Hélder Postiga is the top scorer in UEFA club matches in the current Porto squad with seven goals to his name, three more than Sektioui, Lisandro López and Lucho González. The former's goal on Matchday 3 was his first in the UEFA Champions League proper.

• Only four Porto players had scored in the UEFA Champions League before Matchday 3: Pepe, Ricardo Costa, Lucho González and Lisandro López. The latter two then both struck against Hamburg, with Hélder Postiga also on target. Lucho González and Lisandro López also found the net in Germany with Bruno Moraes adding a late third before Quaresma and Lucho González earned victory in Moscow a fortnight ago.

• Lisandro López and Lucho González are two of ten players to have scored three times in the first five games; Didier Drogba, Fernando Morientes and Kaká lead the way after Matchday 4 with five goals each to their name.

• Quaresma and Lisandro have provided two assists to date, three fewer than Juninho Pernambucano, who has set up the most goals.

• Postiga and Lisandro have both had seven shots on goal, five fewer than Kaká who has had the most.

• Quaresma has also missed the target with seven shots, five fewer than Hamburg's Boubacar Sanogo and Robin van Persie who have had the most efforts wide in the competition.

• Postiga has been caught offside nine times, four fewer than Francesco Totti and Mohamed Tchite.

• Paulo Assunção has committed 12 fouls so far, with Brandão the most penalised player having conceded 20 fouls.

• Quaresma is one of the most fouled players in this season's competition having been impeded 15 times. Ronaldinho and Florent Malouda have been stopped illegally on 17 occasions.

• Porto have had 70 shots in total, four fewer than Real Madrid CF and six less than LOSC Lille Métropole who have had the most in the competition.

• Only Madrid (39 shots) and Valencia CF (36) have had more shots on goal than Porto's total of 35.

• Porto have won 33 corners to date, fewer only than CSKA Moskva who have had 38.

• On average Porto have had 26 minutes of possession per game, more only than FC Steaua Bucuresti, who have had 22 minutes per match on average.

• Bruno Alves turned 25 on 27 November.

• Porto beat Boavista FC 2-0 at home on Saturday to move five points clear at the top of the Portuguese Liga. Quaresma scored the opener early in the second half before Postiga secured the three points.

• Postiga scored his eighth league goal in eleven matches and is still the league's top scorer, three goals ahead of Quaresma .

• Quaresma scored his fifth goal in eleven league games this season at the weekend.

• Striker Adriano came on as a second-half substitute after two months out, including a spell on the sidelines with a leg injury, replacing Postiga.

• Baía recovered from a leg injury, although he remained on the bench while Raul Meireles and Pepe also returned from injury for the Boavista game, although only Pepe made the starting lineup. Meireles came on in the second half.

• João Paulo made his first full league appearance while Ibson started a Liga match for the first time this season.

• Coach Jesualdo Ferreira said: "It was a difficult game during the first half because Boavista played very defensively. But we were able to score and only then could we begin to think about the Arsenal game. We have a good lead at the top of the table but there are still many games left."

• Goalkeeper Helton and defender Pepe are the only two Porto players to have played in every minute of every league game this season.

• The reigning Portuguese champions have scored the most goals in the Liga (26) and have conceded the least (seven).

• Porto are yet to have had a player sent off this season.

• Porto returned from their trip to Moscow to consolidate their Liga lead the following Sunday with a 1-0 win at CF Os Belenenses. In a game they controlled, the Portuguese champions - who were unchanged from the side that had faced CSKA - made sure of the three points just before half-time with Postiga's strike.

• Ferreira admitted his team were not at their best but said the win was deserved: "We can't compare this match with the one against CSKA because we are talking about two completely different types of games. Today we were not so strong but that has also to do with the performance of Belenenses. We could have scored more than one goal in the first half. We controlled the game in the second half and we deserved to win."

• Porto were still without long-term achilles casualties Tomislav Šokota and Pedro Emmanuel while Anderson has an injury to his right fibula and goalkeeper Baía also missed out after sustaining tendonitis in his right leg.

• Holders Porto will play at home against third division side Atlético Clube de Portugal following the draw for the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup that took place on 28 November. The game is scheduled for 7 January.

Arsenal

• Four Arsenal players have featured in all seven UEFA Champions League matches to date, including qualifying: Kolo Touré, Cesc Fabregas, Aleksandr Hleb and Robin van Persie. Furthermore, Jens Lehmann has appeared in all five group-stage games to date. Of those five, only Lehmann has played all 450 minutes in Group G so far.

• Lehmann made his 50th UEFA Champions League appearance in the 2-1 win at Hamburg on Matchday 1. • Tomáš Rosický featured for the 50th time in UEFA club competition at Hamburg. William Gallas (55 appearances), Lauren (72), Ljungberg (85), Lehmann (90) and Henry (108) had already passed their half-century. Hleb made his 50th appearance in Europe against Hamburg a fortnight ago.

• Emmanuel Eboué and Julio Baptista scored their first goals in the UEFA Champions League in the Matchday 5 defeat of Hamburg.

• Johan Djourou made his UEFA Champions League debut on Matchday 1, his third European match after featuring in both matches against NK Dinamo Zagreb in the third qualifying round. Theo Walcott, meanwhile, made his first UEFA Champions League appearance against Porto on Matchday 2.

• Seven different Arsenal players have scored in the group stage this season, with no one finding the net more than once.

• Walcott is one of 18 players who have set up two goals in the first five games, with Juninho Pernambucano the leading assist provider so far with five.

• Robin van Persie has had eight shots on goal in the first four games, four fewer than Kaká who has had the most in the competition.

• The London side have had a total of 66 shots on goal so far, ten fewer than LOSC Lille Métropole who have had the most.

• Justin Hoyte turned 22 on 20 November.

• Arsenal recorded only their second win in seven Premiership matches on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 home defeat of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC. Emmanuel Adebayor opened the scoring midway through the first half with a composed finish and Gilberto doubled the lead from the penalty spot shortly before half-time after Rosický had been fouled by Pascal Chimbonda. The win was completed 18 minutes from time as Van Persie was brought down by Jermaine Jenas and Gilberto scored his second of the afternoon from the spot.

• The result extended Arsenal's remarkable run in league matches at their new home. Of the eight Premiership matches played at the Arsenal Stadium since the club moved there in the summer, four have finished 1-1 while Arsenal have won the other four 3-0. In the four draws, Arsenal have fallen behind before pulling level in the second half.

• As Arsenal prepared for Saturday's 152nd derby with Tottenham - the first at their new stadium - they received a blow with the news that Henry's neck injury would rule him out again, preventing him becoming only the seventh foreign player to make 250 Premiership appearances. The only previous Frenchman to reach the mark was former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.

• In addition Arsène Wenger was without Philippe Senderos through suspension after the Swiss defender's dismissal against Fulham FC in midweek, while Mathieu Flamini (calf), Gallas (thigh), Lauren (knee) and Abou Diaby (ankle) also remained on the sidelines.

• "We needed a lift ahead of the Porto game and showed good character, determination and organisation," Wenger said. "We were under a lot of mental pressure but we had a good team response. We scored first and then it was easier; we were disappointed by our last two results, we realised that as a team we have to give more. You have to work hard for your luck and we did today. I don't know [whether Henry will be back before Christmas]; we have to sit down together and see what's happening. I feel it's a short-term injury."

• Henry is already out of the Porto match because of suspension.

• Arsenal therefore extended their unbeaten run against Tottenham to 15 matches, including 14 in the Premiership.

• Arsenal also kept up their run of winning all the Premiership games they led at half-time - against Watford FC, Reading FC, Liverpool FC and now Tottenham.

• Arsenal's Premiership title hopes faded fast in the week after their dramatic defeat of Hamburg. The following Saturday they fell to a 3-1 loss at Bolton Wanderers FC, where they have not won in the league since April 2002. To make matter worse, two of the goals were scored by former Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka, who had not scored in the league since his summer return to England from Fenerbahçe SK.

• Abdoulaye Faye headed Bolton into an early lead and Anelka struck just before the break. Gilberto pulled one back immediately, heading in a Fabregas cross, but with Arsenal pushing forward Anelka produced another fine effort late on to settle the game.

• Wenger said: "We had a lack of experience at the back in the decisive moments, but have shown a lot of good qualities going forward as well. We just have to find the right balance now. The target is to get the best out of our potential, keep going and see where we finish at the end of the season."

• The game marked the first time Arsenal had lost a match in which Gilberto had scored; the Brazilian had previously found the net in 14 games in all competitions since joining the London club in 2002. Eleven of those games, including a penalty shoot-out triumph at Doncaster Rovers FC in last season's English League Cup, ended in victory.

• Henry, who missed the Bolton trip with his neck problem, learned over the next few days that he had missed out on two top awards. First, on Monday, Fabio Cannavaro was named as European Footballer of the Year, with Henry third. The striker was then left out of the three-strong shortlist for the FIFA World Player of the Year award, with Cannavaro up against Zinédine Zidane and Ronaldinho. The star of Arsenal's female team, Kelly Smith, also missed the cut for the FIFA women's award despite helping the club to the UEFA Women's Cup final to be held next April.

• On the day the latter shortlist was announced, Henry was back in the team as Arsenal fell 2-1 at Fulham - their first defeat at Craven Cottage in more than 40 years. Brian McBride and Tomasz Radzinski put Fulham two up within 19 minutes, and although Van Persie's free-kick made it 2-1 at the break, there was no equaliser and midway through the second period Senderos received a second yellow card for a foul on ex-Arsenal man Luis Boa Morte. Walcott hit the post near the end.

• Wenger, whose team therefore fell 16 points behind Premiership leaders Manchester United FC, said: "The game was played at a high pace, I can't fault the team but it's difficult when you're 2-0 down early on. We're playing lots of games but the team showed great spirit and reactions, we fought until the end but it just doesn't seem to be going for us at the moment. Of course we are down and disappointed, but it's part of your job to cope with that - if you want to play at the top level, sometimes it doesn't go your way. We have character and we will respond, don't worry."

• Arsenal's league form may be mixed, but one club striker is on top form - 18-year-old Anthony Stokes, on loan at Scottish Premier League Falkirk FC, who has struck 12 goals in his last eight games.

• Irish B international Stokes hopes to return and break into the Arsenal lineup, saying: "Although the reserves was great and being at Arsenal is brilliant, unless I'm playing first-team football, I'm not going to develop. I just hope, here at Falkirk or somewhere else, that whatever happens in the next year or two I hope I can develop as much as I can and get a better chance at Arsenal."

• Touré is the only player not to have missed a minute of Arsenal's 15 league games to date this season, though Hleb and Fabregas have also taken part in each fixture.

• Fabregas may be an Arsenal regular at 19, but he knows he still has developing to do. “I am still very young and I have to improve," he said last week. "I am working in the gym, doing extra things because it is impossible to be perfect. I would like to improve my passing in the final third and make more assists."

• Arsenal will visit Liverpool FC in the third round of the FA Cup, a meeting of the last two winners of the competition. The tie will be played on the weekend of 6 and 7 January.

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders FC Barcelona are not having an easy ride this time around. Failure to beat Werder Bremen would make them the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

Manchester United FC could become the first team to win their first three games in a group stage and still not progress if they fail to pick up at least a point against SL Benfica.

Alessandro Costacurta will extend the UEFA Champions League oldest player record he set on Matchday 5 to 40 years and 226 days if he features against LOSC Lille Métropole. Against AEK Athens FC on Matchday 5, the veteran defender was 40 years and 211 days, 94 days older than previous record holder, Club Brugge KV goalkeeper Dany Verlinden when he played the full 90 minutes against AFC Ajax on 9 December 2003. Laurent Blanc is currently the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

For those already-qualified clubs considering giving a chance to young players, Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.

PFC Levski Sofia have double incentive for wanting to do well at Chelsea FC. They are aiming to avoid joining 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side did just that in their maiden campaign in 1997/98, and have not returned to the competition since. Only five other teams have ever gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point namely SK Rapid Wien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first group stage).

Levski have also shipped 15 goals in their first five outings this term, just four short of the record number let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Spartak have not won in their last 22 games in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 this season. AEK ended their run of 21 games without a win with a 1-0 home victory against LOSC Lille Métropole on Matchday 4.

Spartak extended their sequence without a win to 22 games with the 2-2 home draw against FC Bayern München on Matchday 5. Those 22 games are made up of 17 defeats and five draws. The last time Spartak won was 22 November 2000 with a 4-1 second group stage victory at home against Arsenal FC. Interestingly, Spartak’s last away win was at Sporting Clube de Portugal, their Matchday 6 opponents, when they won 3-0 in Lisbon on 17 October 2000. They have not won in their last 12 away games in Europe’s premier club competition.

For all their defensive solidity, CSKA have only scored two goals in the first five games. They can take comfort from the achievement of Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage, as both clubs advanced to the next phase with just three goals to their name. Villarreal are a particularly noteworthy example, as they made it all the way to the semi-finals in their debut campaign in the competition.

AEK and AS Roma can still go through with seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Bremen last term.

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but none of the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A features three league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finished second in last season's , five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature two domestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions. Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classified in third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placed finishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic league championship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation in the UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP and Real Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC's record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end last season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons, United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four times and the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition three times in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However, in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskva and FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition when it started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSV Eindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cup second qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joined by FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claim their place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96, the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA Champions League final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yet to play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourth appearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

Pedigree: Four of the former winners of the competition since it included a group stage element from the 1992/93 season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely Olympique de Marseille (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1994/95), Juventus (1995/96) and BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97). The last ten winners of the competition, Real Madrid CF (three), Manchester United FC, FC Bayern München, AC Milan, FC Porto, Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona are involved in this season's group stage. Only three winners from the last ten UEFA Cup finals are not involved in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, namely Parma FC (1998/99), Feyenoord (2001/02) and Sevilla FC (2005/06). Liverpool and Porto have won both competitions in the past decade, while the remaining UEFA Cup winners in that time are FC Internazionale Milano, Galatasaray SK, Valencia CF and PFC CSKA Moskva.

Only one team has scored more than five goals in an away game, Manchester United FC winning 6-2 at Brøndby IF in 1998/99.

UEFA information

First knockout round draw The 2006/07 UEFA Champions League first knockout round draw will take place from 12.00CET on Friday 15 December at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The eight group winners will be drawn against the eight runners-up into two-legged ties to be played on 20/21 February and 6/7 March. Clubs from the same country cannot be drawn against each other while teams who met in the group stage will also be kept apart. Group runners-up must play the first leg at home. The quarter-finals will follow on 3/4 and 10/11 April, with the semi-finals on 24/25 April and 1/2 May. The final will be played in Athens on 23 May. The full visual identity for the showpiece event will be unveiled during the draw. Media representatives wishing to attend have to apply via email to [email protected] before midday on 14 December.

Player registration The 2006/07 UEFA Champions League regulations state that for all matches from the start of the first knockout round, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February. One player from the above quota of three who has played in UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may be exceptionally registered, provided that the player has not been fielded in the same competition for another club and/or for another club that is currently in the same competition.

UEFA Executive Committee The UEFA Executive Committee holds its final meeting of a hectic year at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday and Friday. The UEFA club competition access list for the 2007/08 season will be examined, together with requests by the associations of San Marino and Andorra for one place in the UEFA Champions League. Terms of reference for the new European Professional Football Strategy Forum promoting and developing dialogue on the European club game will also be discussed.

European Union affairs Concerted co-operation between UEFA and the European political authorities, and the protection of sport's specific nature in future EU legislation, are crucial for football's wellbeing. This was the message from the fourth UEFA Seminar on European Union Affairs held last Thursday and Friday at the Belgian FA headquarters in Brussels, attended by senior EU officials, members of the European parliament and representatives of UEFA's 52 member associations. The seminar put particular focus on the Independent European Sport Review, which has UEFA's full endorsement, and which contains key recommendations for football's wellbeing. The Brussels gathering also gave an update on the current state of UEFA's essential dialogue with the European authorities, and on developments in EU policies and what these mean for European football.

Medical symposium Also last week, UEFA vice-president Senes Erzik welcomed medical experts from across the sporting world to the fourth UEFA Medical Symposium in Istanbul. In his opening address, he said: "Sports medicine plays an increasingly essential role in modern football. Players now play more matches than ever before and in doing so they place their bodies under excessive physical strain. As the demands on top level players intensify, greater importance is placed appropriate and specific medical support. It is this increase in importance and the constantly changing nature of sports medicine that makes a football specific medical symposium necessary."

Head coach profiles

Jesualdo Ferreira Date of birth: 6 June 1946 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: A. Académica de Coimbra, CF Estrela da Amadora, FAR Rabat, Portuguese Football Association (youth coach), FC Alverca, SL Benfica, SC Braga, Boavista FC, FC Porto

Manuel Jesualdo Ferreira has come a long way before arriving at FC Porto prior in summer 2006 at the age of 60. Despite a low-key playing career, it gave him a valuable grounding and he was quick to put those lessons into practice as a coach at A. Académica de Coimbra and CF Estrela da Amadora. His career took a step forward as assistant to António Oliveira at SL Benfica, and he was part of the coaching set-up that brought the Portuguese title to the Lisbon club in 1993/94. He then moved abroad to take charge of Moroccan outfit FAR Rabat.

He returned to his homeland within a year to work with the Portuguese Football Association between 1996 and 2000, including an assistant role in the senior set-up and responsibility for the Under-21 side. He then had a brief spell at FC Alverca before returning to Benfica but failed to make an impact after taking full control of first-team affairs and left in April 2003. Success with SC Braga was just around the corner, however, whom he guided to fifth place in 2003/04 and fourth in each of the following two seasons.

He was naturally a coach in demand and in May 2006 was given the reins at Boavista FC, only to leave without taking charge of a single competitive match. The vacancy at cross-city rivals Porto was too good to resist the following August and he did not hesitate in signing a one-year contract with the 2004 UEFA Champions League winners. He then earned a further year in signing an extension in November 2006. Having taken unfashionable Braga into the UEFA Cup three seasons running, including the 2006/07 campaign, Ferreira has a chance for glory in the finest club competition of all.

Arsène Wenger Date of birth: 22 October 1949 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC

Arsène Wenger was never covered in glory as a player, but has more than made up for his lack of playing success in his time as a coach, turning Arsenal FC into one of Europe's top teams thanks to his incredible eye for a bargain and an astute footballing mind.

Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at RC Strasbourg and AS Cannes before AS Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of AS Monaco FC in 1987. Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Manager of the Year award. He reportedly turned down France and FC Bayern München to continue at Monaco, although he did subsequently move on to Japan and enjoy tremendous success with Nagoya Grampus Eight.

Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first foreigner to win the Premiership in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs to boot. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimed another double in 2002, and in 2004 played some swashbuckling football en route to becoming the first team since 1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten. Wenger, given the freedom of Islington for his domestic success in north London, nearly topped all of his achievements by taking Arsenal to the UEFA Champions League final last May, only for FC Barcelona to come from behind for a 2-1 victory.

His many prestigious assignments since have included the 1997 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final between FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain FC, and a UEFA Intertoto Cup final later that year, the 2003 UEFA Champions League final involving Juventus and AC Milan - Merk won the UEFA Fair Play prize for his display in Manchester - and the UEFA EURO 2004™ decider between Greece and Portugal, having had a UEFA EURO 2000™ semi-final. His other major tournaments have included the 2002 FIFA World Cup and 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup and, after being selected as one of Europe's ten referees for the 2006 World Cup finals, he refereed three group games in his homeland.

Merk is also well-known for his humanitarian work. He was instrumental in a project to help children enjoy a better life on the Indian sub-continent, setting up a special village and school facilities for the under-privileged local youngsters in the area of the city of Trichy, launching agricultural projects and taking care of medical health in the immediate region. In addition, the German referee was a UEFA EURO 2004™ ambassador for the UEFA/International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) campaign to highlight the plight of children in war, along with colleagues Pierluigi Collina, Anders Frisk and Ľuboš Micheľ. Before the final tournament, Merk travelled to Sierra Leone on a field trip to experience the ICRC’s activities for himself

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 24 August saw the 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays one home and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings. a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question; b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question; c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question; d) superior goal difference from all group matches played; e) higher number of goals scored; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be played over two legs on 20 February and 7 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their group move into the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group are eliminated from UEFA club competition for the season.
