BLUE JACKETS SIGN DEFENSEMAN VLADISLAV GAVRIKOV to THREE-YEAR CONTRACT Gavrikov Ranked Among NHL’S Top Rookie Blueliners in Goals, Assists and Points in 2019-20 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NOVEMBER 5, 2020 BLUE JACKETS SIGN DEFENSEMAN VLADISLAV GAVRIKOV TO THREE-YEAR CONTRACT Gavrikov ranked among NHL’s top rookie blueliners in goals, assists and points in 2019-20 COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to a three-year, $8.4 million contract through the 2022-23 National Hockey League season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. Gavrikov, 24, recorded five goals and 13 assists for 18 points with 18 penalty minutes and a +1 plus/minus rating in 69 contests with Columbus in 2019-20. He led all Blue Jackets rookies in assists and time on ice (18:59) and ranked second in points and shots on goal (81), while finishing sixth-T among NHL rookie defensemen in goals and points and seventh-T in assists. He added 1-2-3 and six penalty minutes in 10 playoff outings, including scoring his first career postseason goal in Game Four of the Eastern Conference Qualifying Series vs. Toronto on August 7. “Vladimir Gavrikov was everything we hoped he would be during his rookie season last year, establishing himself as a top four defenseman in the National Hockey League,” said Kekalainen. “He is still a young player that we expect will get better every year and continue to be an important part of our blueline.” The Yaroslavl, Russia native made his NHL regular season debut on October 5, 2019 at Pittsburgh and notched his first career goal on November 15, 2019 vs. St. Louis (Jake Allen). The defenseman had made his NHL debut with Columbus in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on May 4, 2019 at Boston and skated in two Stanley Cup Playoffs contests in 2019. Prior to his NHL debut, Gavrikov recorded 16-33-49, 96 penalty minutes and a +97 plus/minus rating in 222 career games in the Kontinental Hockey League split between Yaroslavl and SKA St. Petersburg from 2014-19. In 2018-19, he tallied 5-15-20, 10 penalty minutes and led the KHL in plus/minus rating at +48 in 60 games with SKA St. Petersburg. The 6-3, 213-pound blueliner was selected by the Blue Jackets in the sixth round, 159th overall, at the 2015 NHL Draft. He has represented Russia at numerous international competitions, including the 2018 Olympic Games, where he collected 2-1-3, six penalty minutes and was +6 in six contests to help the Olympic Athletes of Russia win the gold medal. He also played in the 2017 (bronze medal), 2018 and 2019 IIHF World Championships and the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championships, where he won a silver medal. Eleven Caribbean Nations Join US, Brazil as ‘Intense’ COVID-19 Spreaders - Health Agency WASHINGTON, October 7 (Sputnik) - Eleven countries and territories in the Caribbean have moved in the past two months from moderate to intense sources of novel coronavirus cases in the Americas, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Director Carissa Etienne said in a press release on Wednesday. “While Brazil and the US remain significant drivers of new cases in our region, we’re concerned by spikes in cases - including in places that had effectively managed outbreaks, like Cuba and Jamaica,” Etienne said. Over the past 60 days, 11 countries and territories in the Caribbean have moved from moderate to intense transmission, which is a concerning development as countries reopen airspace, the release said. PAHO attributed much of the increase to younger people who have mild or no symptoms and are unaware they are infected. Several groups remain at particular risk of spreading the disease throughout the region, particularly those “with limited access to prevention and care, including black, Hispanic and Native American populations in the United States, which “are nearly three times as likely to contact COVID as their white counterparts,” the release said. Even before the COVI D-19 pandemic, up to 50 percent of older populations in some low- and middle-income countries lacked access to some essential health services - an issue that the pandemic has only exacerbated, the release added.

It may be that the NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLS and NWSL not only managed to cut their losses by getting back on TV, they also showed America that diligence pays dividends. Like in Canada. Here’s Mark Cameron, associate professor in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at Case Western Reserve University: "The leagues are identifying clusters of COVID-19 infections. They don’t want to be responsible for a bona fide outbreak player-to-player, team-to-team or team-to-community, or any combination therein.

The Blue Jackets, however, must wait until July 1 to officially sign Russian forward Mikhail Grigorenko to the one-year, $1.2 million contract for the 2020-21 season. Nearly 12 hours after announcing the signing on Monday, the Jackets issued a news release late Monday night stating the deal was rejected by NHL Central Registry. "The contract subsequently has been rejected ... due to a misunderstanding with regards to the filing window," the statement reads. "We have been in contact with the league and Dan Milstein, Grigorenko’s agent, and the contract will be re-filed on July 1." Grigorenko, who finished his contract with CSKA Moscow this season in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, is thought to be an unrestricted free agent until a deal is re-filed and accepted.
