"The Push to Asia" and the Australian Media Response: An Outline of the Issue. In 1989 the Garnaut Report appeared arguing Australian trade would have to take on a new Asian focus. 1 The Hawke Government began to impleme~t its recommendations in 1990-91. But it was not until the ascendancy of the Keating administration that in 1992 the Federal Government launched a major national initiative to integrate Australia more closely with the Australian-Pacific Region. Various federal politicians and departmental spokesperscns argued with a great deal of urgency that "Asia" was a potential economic lifeline for Australia well into the 21st Century. Federal Minister Dawkins said the time had come for Australia "to be enmeshed with the dynamism of the Asian-Pacific region". Prime Minister Keating addressing the region said Australia was "a friend you can rely on". Foreign Minister Evans said we were "not Asian but alongside Asia".2 The Federal Government initiative called for a reorientation of our national economic focus towards the Asian-Pacific Region. The urgency of the issue implied a major revolution in our way of interacting and communicating with the region at all levels. Apart from commerce, trade and investment, there were calls to overhaul cultural and educational exchanges, to rethink defence, foreign policy and regional security issues, and most importantly, for the Australian me~ia to "get on board" by giving greater emphasis to reporting the region in a fair, accurate, comprehensive and positive light. In short, the Federal Government was calling for not just individuals to take up the Asian challenge but for key institutions to accept that they had a responsibility in helping the Federal Government's new Asia-Pacific agenda to succeed. Beyond this lay a somewhat rhetorical clarion call for all Australians to readjust the very way we as a nation consider our place within the region. A re-examining of the self­ image of :a shared national identity, even a deeper questioning of long held and long cherished notions of national values - real and mythical, was not beyond the pale. This process of self-reflection and redefining was about breaking down barriers between Australian economic and financial markets and the region. ' ~:· _.... Lee Push to Asia place in the sun, a market share, within the "greater Asia" marketplace. Definitions of where this "greater Asia" was exactly were many and varied, to the point that some began to argue that public references to "Asia" were quickly degenerating into a cliche at best, and a disguise for a new "cargo cult" mentality at worst. Amidst confusion and conflict in the public mind, accusations arose that the "Push to Asia" was being driven by the hidden persuaders, the "economic rationists", who had kept economics at the forefront of the political debate and media commentary in Australia. 3 That aside, there was still a general agreement that "Asia", (now akin to motherhood), would become the economic powerhouse of the 21st century and the region of the globe from where most growth and investment was expected to occur in the immediate future. Australia's nirvana! To convey this message to the Australian people and to the region itself, the Federal Government has sought to enlist the support of the Australian media in a campaign for greater regional integration. It has also sought to influence the way the Australian media projects images of Australia to the region and the way it projects the images of Asia to the Australian people, be they newspaper and magazine readers, radio listeners or television viewers. This Working Paper for the Edith Cowan University Centre for Asian Communications and Media Studies seeks to examine the ways in which the Australian media has responded to the Federal Government's "Push to Asia". A focus of this paper will be the media coverage surrounding the Prime Minister Paul Keating 's two major regional tours in Asia during 1992. The first tour was in April and focused on Australian-Indonesian relations. The second tour was in September and focused on Australian-Japanese relations. The methodology employed in this paper will be through content analysis. It will survey and sample some of the leading domestic press coverage, concentrating on page one headlines, editorials, features and commentary by leading columnists. Where possible reference will be made to the electronic media. A more detailed study would naturally sub-divide the media more closely. It would distinguish to a greater extent than here, between reports by foreign editors, Asian specialists, overseas-based correspondents and general political reporters. It would also examine the angle presented by business and trade-related journalists within their specialist columns and supplements as opposed to coverage in the general news 3see Kenneth Davidson, 'Heroes and Heritics', Age, 17.6.93, p.13. 4 9/2/93 Lee Push to Asia reports. Thus this paper will inevitably fall short of a comprehensive press and media overview. It seeks to position the examples cited within the context of a pre-existing press debate about Australian-Asian foreign (and economic) relations and the related issue of Australian-Asian media relations. 2. The Historical Background of Australian-Asian Relations. (a) Redefining .. Asia .. in the wake of the renewed .. Push to Asia ... When we talk of Australia's economic "Push to Asia" it immediately raises the question of "where is Asia?". Most contemporary commentators stress that geographically speaking Asia is so broad that the term "Asians" defies homogeneity.4 Within each Asian country ther~ is usually a cultural, ethnic and religious diversity that renders any universal application of what should be the appropriate Australian response to "Asia" confusing at best. In short, there is not one "Asia", but many.

When we were down the hole one day, I remember tapping Brant on the shoulder and asking him if he thought we’d make the front page of The [Launceston] Examiner, our local paper. Then we get out and Oprah wants to interview us! Todd Russell1 I would like my life to settle down and to be normal again … Before we could go outside and there would be no cameras on us but now cameras follow Dad and everyone wants his autograph … And I wish the media would mind its business because they say things that are not true. Maddison Russell (Todd Russell’s daughter, from a writing competition)2 — Introduction By the time this article sees print, the events at Beaconsfield, Tasmania will have joined a backlog of similar news moments, largely unremembered by all but those who were personally affected by what happened there. Yet for fourteen days in mid-2006 this small mining town became, like so many places before it, ‘the network executive’s best friend’3 and an indication of a significant change in the way television news is reported and packaged in Australia. At 9.23 pm, on 25 April (Anzac Day), a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine killed miner Larry Knight (his body was recovered two days later). On 30 April, two miners—Todd Russell and Brant Webb—were discovered to still be alive one kilometre underground.

Most obituaries praised his tenure as prime minister (December 1972–October 1975). For Australian columnist Troy Bramston, Whitlam “was inimitable.”1 Paul Kelly, the Australian newspaper’s editor-at-large, main- tained that Whitlam “bequeathed to his successors a series of policy glories to be defended,” including “a more independent national ethos.” Indeed, “he was a rare leader who changed the nation’s direction.”2 Summarizing Whit- lam’s purported achievements, former Australian prime minister and Labor leader Paul Keating concluded that the election of Whitlam’s Labor Party to office in December 1972 released Australia “from the torpor of the Menzies era.”3 It also rescued Australia from its historic dependence on great and pow- erful friends. However, those of a more skeptical disposition found Whitlam’s achievements less impressive. Chasing reporters: Infotainment, intertextuality and media satire. © Copyright 2009 Stephen Harrington Chasing Reporters: Infotainment, Intertextuality and Media Satire STEPHEN HARRINGTON Queensland University of Technology, Australia ABSTRACT The Chaser’s War on Everything was a night time entertainment program which screened on Australia’s public broadcaster, the ABC in 2006 and 2007. This enormously successful comedy show managed to generate a lot of controversy in its short lifespan (see, for example, Dennehy, 2007; Dubecki, 2007; McLean, 2007; Wright, 2007), but also drew much praise for its satirising of, and commentary on, topical issues. Through interviews with the program’s producers, qualitative audience research and textual analysis, this paper will focus on this show’s media satire, and the segment ‘What Have We Learned From Current Affairs This Week?’ in particular. Viewed as a form of ‘Critical Intertextuality’ (Gray, 2006), this segment (which offered a humorous critique of the ways in which news and current affairs are presented elsewhere on television) may equip citizens with a better understanding of the new genre’s production methods, thus producing a higher level of public media literacy. This paper argues that through its media satire, The Chaser acts not as a traditional news program would in informing the public with new information, but as a text which can inform and shape our understanding of news that already exists within the public sphere. Humorous analyses and critiques of the media (like those analysed in this paper), are in fact very important forms of infotainment, because they can provide “other, ‘improper,’ and yet more media literate and savvy interpretations” (Gray, 2006, p.

    A Love Affair with Latham? AUSTRALIAN NEWS MEDIA CHRONICLE JANUARY-JUNE 2004 John Harrison “Wishful intelligence, the desire to please or reassure the recipient, was the most dangerous commodity in the whole realm of secret information.” James Bond in Ian Fleming’s Thunderball (1961:112) This critical interpretation of key issues and events in the Australian news media in the first half of 2004 analyses trends in four areas: the reporting of politics, changes in media policy and regulation, attempts to limit media freedom through restrictions on reporting, and movements in people, ownership, and broadcasting ratings. Of particular significance are the failure of the Australian Broadcasting Authority to adequately address cash for comment, a failure which had a considerable flow on effect; continuing challenges to the integrity of the ABC from within and without; mooted changes in defamation law; and a perception, again from within and without, that the Nine television network was losing its pre-eminence in commercial broadcasting. Much of the reporting and the policy debate were conditioned by the prospect of a closely contested federal election in the second half of the year. POLITICS: Luvin’ Latham The Australian media’s love affair with Opposition Leader Mark Latham is the big political news story of the period under review. Pictures of Mark Latham reading to small children; and then Latham standing beside Bob Brown in the Tasmanian forests, Mark Latham putting out the garbage at his western Sydney home, Mark Latham’s man boobs, and Mark and his son Ollie sharing a chip butty. The pic-facs have been endless.1 Elected on 2 December 2003 as a replacement for the hapless Simon Crean by the narrowest of margins (47 to 45), Latham’s ascent was a surprise for many journalists and apparently the Liberal 1 (Photo: Sydney Daily Telegraph 24 April 2004).

Labor Out of the Wilderness In March 1963, The Daily Telegraph published a bombshell picture of the Opposition Leader, Arthur Calwell, and his deputy, Gough Whitlam, waiting in the dead of night outside the Kingston Hotel for 36 members of the specially convened ALP National Conference to vote on the Menzies Government’s legislation for a US naval communications base at North West Cape in Western Australia. This gave Whitlam a powerful weapon in his mission to transform the Australian Labor Party into a democratic national institution. Many inside and outside the Labor Party today would argue it is far from a truly democratic party. This is fair criticism, but when compared with the Liberal Party (Australia’s most successful postwar party), the Labor Party is far more democratic. Under Prime Minister John Howard, who over four parliamentary terms assumed the role of an elected dictator, the federal parliamentary Liberal Party was less democratic than ever. Whitlam’s achievements were at least as great when in opposition as when he was Prime Minister. Whitlam ranks with Menzies as one of Australia’s most significant political leaders. Menzies came back from his failed prewar career to unite the dispirited and impotent conservatives and overthrow a socialist Labor government that appeared to have a stranglehold on power. Whitlam brought together a divided and hopeless Labor Party to return it to power after its longest period in opposition, and changed politics profoundly. To the astonishment of the nation, Whitlam was sacked by the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr, on Remembrance Day, 11 November 1975, despite having the confidence of the Lower House of Parliament both before and after his sacking.
