    MucknellAbbey Factsheet #5 Organic Orchard Following the vision laid out in the Land Use Strategy for Mucknell, we are working towards producing most of our food using organic methods, contributing to income generation by selling produce. In February 2011, we planted 31 fruit trees, to form an organic orchard. We sourced most of the trees from Walcot Organic Nursery, in the Vale of Evesham, and the Banns were a gift. We planted separate stands of apples, pears and plums. Crab apples are very good pollinators of all apples, so were planted on the edge of the stand of apples to encourage pollination. We planted Gladstone on a corner, so that its vigorous rootstock is less likely to interfere with the growth of the other trees. We planted other varieties according to their pollination groups, so that Bs are next to A-Cs, Cs are next to B-Ds, etc. We are planning to plant comfrey under the trees, cutting it and leaving it in situ to rot down around the trees as a natural fertiliser. We have a really nice supply of tree fruit, with the exception of plums. The trees had a beautiful bloom but we had poor pollinating weather, so unfortunately no fruit set. There is a good crop of peaches, nectarines, and with the exception of Evercrisp, we have a nice supply of apples over all. Considering the spring we had, we feel very fortunate for the amount of fruit that we have. During most spring seasons we have 3 to 4 nights of below freezing temperatures, this year we had 10 which had us very worried about crop damage. U-pick blueberries will start the first week of July. It looks like the picking will be excellent and typically lasts for about 3 weeks. We have one raspberry patch now, the variety is Polana. It is growing nicely and should be ready for picking in late July or early August, and remain available until the 1st hard frost. Below is our estimated 2021 u-pick schedule. We hope everyone is able to visit our farm this season so please keep in mind that the weather here in SW Michigan can be unpredictable.     - Advertisement - Cosmic Crisp's growth is out of this world 1 / 2 April 26, 2021 After a record-breaking sophomore year that hasn't finished, the Cosmic Crisp apple’s growth trajectory indicates it will launch to the top of the apple chart in no time. Nielsen data show monumental growth, reaching No. 11 in sales dollars in March, and No. 14 over the 52 weeks ending March 27. If retailers do not have a Cosmic Crisp apple program in place now, they are missing out on very important sales and customer expectations. “Cosmic Crisp volume is planned to more than double this fall, and double again for the 2022 harvest. This volume will rival current core variety volume, displacing mature varieties that are being replaced with higher color strains and higher flavor varieties,” said Catherine Gipe-Stewart, communications manager. “Cosmic Crisp is rising so quickly, it has potential to become a top-five variety at this time next year.” Nielsen data show a 595 percent increase in dollars and a 720 percent in volume over the four weeks ending March 27. In March alone, Cosmic Crisp earned the 11th spot with $4.3 million in sales and 1.8 million pounds, at an average price of $2.52 per pound, right in line with Honeycrisp at $2.55 per pound. Looking at a yearly perspective (last 52 weeks), Cosmic Crisp has earned $20 million in sales, with 7.7 million pounds. “Historically, apples like Cosmic Crisp take root in the Pacific region, and spread eastward like wildfire,” said Gipe-Stewart.

Its purpose is to obtain an indication of the volume of material that would be involved in establishing clonal germ plasm repositories for the use of fruit breeders throughout the country.
