FLOWER SHOW REPORT 2008 Mobile Car Servicing & Repairs Once again you came out with your families and supported the Flower Show. At least there seemed to be lots of you there, Fully qualified motor mechanic and you were all smiling - which I took to be a good sign. 25 years experience However the gate takings were only £43 up on last year. SERVICES Dominique Vaughan Editors view: Those of you who went in without paying are only helping All Interior and to kill off this event (sooner rather than later !!!). It surely isn’t asking too Exterior Work much for you all, to at least respect the time and effort that goes into planning Tiling, General Home and organising such a day, by doing the right thing and at least paying the Maintenance admission charge. Garden Features My own personal feelings are that it should perhaps become a totally Local and Experienced alcohol free zone, after all it is possible to have a good time without the need for drink, and anyone seen to be imbibing or appearing to be under the influence Contact Paul or Tracey should be escorted off the site, no ifs or buts. 01843 823646

Minster & Monkton Royal British Legion held an open day on Village Pub and Restaurant Saturday, 26th July and a good time was had by all. The day was organised to encourage people to come and see what the club had to offer, and believe us, there was plenty on offer that day. PROBABLY During the morning, the ATC band from Ramsgate played outside at the front of the club. There was a disco in the afternoon for the THE BEST youngsters and they were also treated to a tour of a fire engine from Manston. They also had the opportunity to partake in face painting, CARVERY hook the duck and a colouring competition. Hot dogs and burgers were available from the barbeque from lunchtime until late into the evening and the bar was open with drinks IN THANET at club prices. With our busy lives, it’s easy to plug a rechargeable device into the wall overnight, or forget about it for hours at a time, but this wastes energy. Eco-Tip: Don’t leave your mobile phones, mp3 players or other rechargeable devices plugged in longer than they need to be. Once they’re fully charged or you remove the device from the charger, turn off the switch. Chargers left switched on use energy, whether they are charging something or not.

In the last year, the Minster meeting has helped many members living in the village and surrounding areas to lose weight, feel fitter, and grow in confidence. It’s a really friendly and welcoming meeting with plenty of support on offer from both myself, as the Weight Watchers leader, and also other members. If you’ve over indulged on your summer holiday, or want to get into the little black dress for Christmas, or just feel the need to lose a few pounds, then why no join our Weight Watcher meeting in Minster? The class meets every Wednesday from 6:30 - 7:30pm at the Old Schools, opposite the Village Hall. During the meeting, we talk about a number of different topics related to weight loss, such as the different food groups, eating out and being more active. As our hall has a fully equipped kitchen, I occasionally do a Gordon Ramsey - or should that be a Delia Smith? - impression and turn my hand to a cookery demonstration. I also bring in healthy low point foods for members to try. There is free registration from 24th August - 25th October and if you buy a monthly pass (£17.95), then you’ll get a free starter pack worth £9.95. If you’d like some help to lose those unwanted pounds, then please come along and join us. The Weight Watchers programme is so easy to follow and with our KickStart plan for 2008, you could get off to a flying start and lose up to 5lbs in your first two weeks. We’ve also heard rumours about ‘kissing gates’ being Now I know I’m only a farmer, erected on the footpaths, supposedly to prevent horse Maybe without much hope, riders using them, but that then lends a whole new But that don’t mean I’ve got no thinking, meaning to chasing cats on bikes !!! Like those vicars, and bishops or the Pope. Maybe, just maybe, he ought to admit his age, start to take things a little easier and get himself a mobility scooter Yes I was brought up to see the meaning, Of why we were sent to this Earth, And why it was that Mary gave, Jesus his graceful and loving birth.

OK, I plough the land sometimes, Then maybe sheer my sheep, But I always go to bed at night And say prayers before my sleep.

It’s what my dear mum taught me, And these prayers they mostly come true, I don’t ask for much, never for myself, Don’t think I’d argue with the dog !! Just to help a dear old few.

Last week it was the baker, Who was having troubles with his health, But if you were to pass his shop, you’d see, He’s back to his dear old self.

And not just people sometime things, I prayed for Mr Drape’s dear old car, And since back then, that mighty thing Has driven him wide and far.

COMPUTER CORNER (and NO I don’t look like the pic on the left) It’s my turn again this month, and firstly I’d like to say thank you to the reader who sent her thanks, via our website, for the information I try to regularly include here that may be of use. A timely reminder would seem to be in order, if my own Inbox is anything to go by. Remember if you receive emails purporting to come from your bank, building society, Ebay or Paypal then be extremely careful in what you do with them. If they are asking you to verify anything to do with your account, such as usernames, passwords or other account details then please - please - please ignore them and dispatch them permanently to that huge recycle bin in the sky, don’t for goodness sake answer any of them in anyway whatsoever. Even if they look absolutely genuine they probably aren’t, and none of the establishments mentioned above would The Saddler ever ask for these details via email. It will soon be that time of the year when Mum and Dad are busy buying Christmas 7 Monkton Road, Minster presents for little Johnny and his sister, and one or even two computers or laptops may be on the list. I know it is tempting when it seems you might save a few pounds but just a word of caution about buying a bundled package e.g computer/laptop with printer, 01843 821331 scanner and various additional software. Ask yourself before you part with your hard earned cash, “Is this the printer that I need - how much are replacement ink cartridges Where A Warm Welcome going to cost. Do we actually need this additional software or will it remain forever in the box?”. from Jan & Mick Bundled printers are normally from the cheaper end of the range, but when it awaits you comes to replacement cartridges these can can cost as much if not more than the printer did!! Check the replacement costs whilst you’re there, and before you buy any printer. Good Food, Local Real Ales Are they offering you additional software either free or at a knockdown price, if you take it with the computer/laptop. Will you ever need it - I’ve known many people to Bat & Trap (Pitch for Hire) be offered, and then purchase, such items as Antivirus/Firewall packages only to find, Pool Table on booting up the new machine, that the same software is already installed, plus you then find these are going to incur an ongoing annual fee to keep them updated. Sponsors of Saddlers Choose the computer/laptop that suits you, select your own peripherals (scanner, Sunday Football Team printer etc) and say NO to additional software. If after the free trial period, for software Regular Disco’s that comes installed, you don’t wish to continue using it then you haven’t spent money Open all day on Friday, Saturday & Sunday unnecessarily and, as I’ve regularly said in this column, there are plenty of Freeware with normal hours Monday to Thursday programs available that do the job just as well. We always have a good selection of some available for downloading on our website. This month we offer you Launchy - this is a great way to open files, folders, websites, and programs on your computer. Nobody likes to hunt through the start menu to find an application, just to find that it is hidden under some obscure folder, named after a company you have never heard of! Ultimate Defrag - a better way to defragment your hard drives You can download both of these from our website at www.minstermatters.org.uk Well I’ve tried my best to fill the column inches I’ve been allowed and I hope some of you find some of this of some use. If you don’t then look out for my next effort in November when maybe there’ll be something to interest you. That’s it - you aint getting anymore from me this month - Jackie will be back with you for the October issue. Itsma Hobby

Social Housing – Do You Want To Live In Minster ? Minster Parish Council (MPC) is intending to compile a list of villagers who would like to be considered for social housing, when and if such housing should become available in the village. MPC anticipate that this will initially occur once the H2B site (off Monkton Road) is under construction. If you live in the village, or have previously lived here but have moved out because of housing costs, then please contact MPC with a short résumé of your reasons for wishing to apply for social housing. Please understand that this does not necessarily mean that you will be eligible, as this particular list is solely for the use of MPC and is not the District Council’s “recognised housing list”. Decisions on the allocation of any social housing ultimately remain with Thanet District Council (TDC), but MPC intend to use their list, to do all they can, to help ensure that any social housing that becomes available in the village, is prioritised so that it is initially offered only to residents of Minster or to people who originate from here, but have been forced to move away, due to the cost of property in the village. If you are keen to be considered for social housing within the village, MPC suggest that, initially, you contact the TDC housing department, Skin Care and Associated Therapies informing them of your wish to be housed in Minster, after which send the * Unisex Salon * Late Evenings ‘til 9pm * Gift Vouchers * Semi Permanent Make-up same information to Minster Parish Council to add to their list, so they too * Dermal Fillers * Slimming Treatments are aware of your wishes and may be able to help you when properties are * Nail Treatments * Holistic Treatments being allocated. * Bio Sculpture Gel Nails * Oxygen Therapy Please send your short résumé to * Dermalogica Treatments * Micro Dermabrasion Minster Parish Council, Library & Neighbourhood Centre, 4A Monkton * Waxing/Tinting/Make-up * Pregnancy Massage Road, Minster CT12 4EA * Non-Surgical Face Lift * LED Light Therapy * Colonic Irrigation * Chiropractor Remember – They can’t help you if they don’t know !! * Skin Tag/Red Vein/Milia Removal IMPORTANT CHANGE OF MM DEADLINE DATE!! *Spa Days & Exclusive Parties Please bear in mind the new deadline when submitting articles Open: Mon 9am - 3pm • Tues/Wed 9am - 5pm Thurs/Fri 9am - 9pm • Sat 9am - 5pm for the magazine.
