j J Eastman Wind The Ensemble members are Eastman School of Music students, many of whom are graduating at this Commencement. From its formation in 1952 by Frederick Fennell, the Ensemble Eastman Wind Ensemble has taken an approach decidedly different from that of the traditional wind band. The Ensemble has since become a model for others of its kind around the world, and has been credited with spurring a renaissance in symphonic wind music. Donald Hunsberger, professor of conducting and ensembles, has directed the group since 1965. Seven major tours have reinforced the Ensemble's reputation. During the summers of 1990, 1992, and 1994, they made extensive tours of]apan. The group routinely performed as many as five encores before enthusiastic, sell-out crowds in Japanese concert halls. The Ensemble's more than 50 recordings have set the performance standard for wind ensembles. "Carnaval," a 1987 release of turn-of-the-century cornet solos with Wynton Marsalis, was nominated for a Grammy Award and reached # 1 on Billboard's Compact Disc Chart. The most recent release is "Live at Osaka," a Sony Classical CD recorded during the 1990 Japan Tour.
