6 6 6 6 WELCOME

April 17, 2010

Dear Brothers in Christ –

We are pleased that our 6th Boston Catholic Men’s Conference is being held in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, which is the mother church of the Archdiocese and the region. This beautiful house of God is a gift of our Catholic predecessors who were immigrants that labored and sacrificed to build this glorious and holy gathering spot for generations to come.

We are so pleased to have Danny Abramowicz, Peter Herbeck, Curtis Martin & Brian Patrick here from EWTN’s Crossing the Goal program and Father Paul O’Brien from St. Patrick’s parish in Lawrence. These men have devoted their lives to ministry in the Church and particularly ministry to Catholic men. They speak as a team and we think this will enhance the integration of all of our keynote addresses, and help us to focus on “crossing the goal” of our lives to reach the eternal destiny that Christ wants for us.

This Boston Catholic Men’s Conference wouldn’t have been possible without the help of: x Father Kevin O’Leary, Rector of the Cathedral, for his welcome & hospitality. x Corey Bassett-Tirrell, Paul Milanazzo and the dedicated staff of the Cathedral. x Cathedral High School for the use of their gymnasium and restrooms! x Our many volunteers & parish captains who inspire us with their dedication. x The priests of the Archdiocese and surrounding Dioceses who are here for Confession and Deacon Pat Guerrini for helping with the liturgy. x Our speakers for their commitment to being here with all of us! x Martin Doman for his support of the Conferences and for being with us once again! x George Martell (www.georgemartell.com) for providing event photography & marketing. x Father Reed & the team from CatholicTV for filming & promoting the Conference x Antonio Enrique and the staff from TheBostonPilot.com, the staff of The Anchor, and Dom Bettinelli for their help promoting the conference. x Fr. Mike Harrington & the Vocations Office for their help with Adoration. x ParishComm for their help with these program booklets. x Our colleagues on The Women’s Conference Organizing Team. x Cardinal Seán O’Malley and the staff of the Cardinal’s Office for all their help.

The Boston Catholic Men’s Conference Organizing Team Bob Allard, Jim Baker, Bob George, Bob Gohn, Joe Kolb, Scot Landry, Phil Lohnes, George Martell, John Spadaccini, Tim VanDamm, Andreas Widmer and George Willett.

11 12 12 GUIDE FOR CONFESSION

“To those who have been far away from the sacrament of reconciliation and forgiving love, I make this appeal: Come back to this source of grace; do not be afraid! Christ himself is waiting for you. He will heal you, and you will be at peace with God!”

- Pope John Paul II

The basic requirement for a good confession is to have the intention of returning to God like the Prodigal Son and of acknowledging our sins with true sorrow before his representative, the priest.

BEFORE CONFESSION x Try to recognize sin in our lives – Modern society has lost a sense of sin. As a Catholic follower of Christ, I must make an effort to recognize sin in my daily actions, words and omissions. The Gospels show how important is the forgiveness of our sins. Lives of saints prove that the person who grows in holiness has a stronger sense of sin, sorrow for sins, and a need for the Sacrament of Penance or Confession. x Make an examination of Conscience – What sins have I committed since my last confession? A good confession is one in which I confess all the mortal sins I am aware of and their frequency. A short examination could follow the ten commandments along these lines: o Do I give God time every day in prayer? o Have I used God's name in vain: lightly or carelessly? o Have I tried to observe Sunday as a family day and a day of rest? o Do I honor and obey my parents? Have I neglected my duties to my spouse and children? o Have I engaged, in any way, in sins against human life? Have I been angry or resentful? o Have I stolen what is not mine? Do I waste time at work, school, and home? o Have I lied? Have I gossiped? Am I critical, negative or uncharitable in my thoughts of others? o Have I consented to impure thoughts and actions? o Do I envy the families or possessions of others? Are material possessions the purpose of my life?

DURING CONFESSION x Remember that the priest can help you – If you need assistance – especially if you have been away for some time – simply ask the priest and he will help you by "walking" you through the steps to make a good confession. x A helpful way to begin is: “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been ... since my last confession. These are my sins.” x Tell your sins simply and honestly to the priest. If you are not sure about the degree of seriousness of something you confess, just ask the priest to help you. x After the confession of sins, the priest will give you a penance, and then absolve you of your sins. Try to perform your penance soon. The priest may also ask you to say a short act-of-contrition. x An act of contrition: “O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you. I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen.” x At the End of Confession – Listen to words of absolution, the sacramental forgiveness of the Church through the ordained priest. As you listen to the words of forgiveness you may make the sign of the cross with the priest. x After Confession – Reflect on God’s infinite mercy. Imagine God embracing you with the big hug that the Joyful Father did in the parable of the Return of the Prodigal Son. 13

16 MASS: THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading – A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41)

When the captain and the court officers had brought the apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them, “We gave you strict orders, did we not, to stop teaching in that name? Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man’s blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles said in reply, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.” The Sanhedrin ordered the apostles to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them. So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name. THE WORD OF THE LORD, Thanks Be to God.

Psalm (Ps 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11-12, 13): I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. x I will extol you, O LORD, for you drew me clear and did not let my enemies rejoice over me. O LORD, you brought me up from the netherworld; you preserved me from among those going down into the pit. x Sing praise to the LORD, you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger lasts but a moment; a lifetime, his good will. At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing. x Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper. You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks.

2nd Reading – A Reading from the Book of Revelation (Rev 5:11-14)

I, John, looked and heard the voices of many angels who surrounded the throne and the living creatures and the elders. They were countless in number, and they cried out in a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing.” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, everything in the universe, cry out: “To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” The four living creatures answered, “Amen, “and the elders fell down and worshiped. THE WORD OF THE LORD, Thanks Be to God.

Gospel – A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Saint John (Jn 21:1-19)

At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He then said to Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.” THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD, Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
