National Premier League 2021 FLOREAT ATHENA Floreat Athena FOOTBALL CLUB vs. Bayswater City SC Round 16 Saturday, 24/07/2021 3.00 PM #70YearsStrong #OneAthena Matchday Programme brought to you by: Design and Content: Desiree Durrani Cover Photographer: Tom McCarthy PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Hello and welcome to Litis Stadium. I would like to give special thanks to Bayswater City SC President Gerry Maio who is a stalwart of not just his club but throughout the football community in Western Australia. His leadership, networking and work ethic is something I admire and try to emulate. He always calls a spade a spade, loves his club and the game and the sport is much richer for his involvement. I would also like to acknowledge all our wonderful sponsors and stakeholders who we will be acknowledging today at the pre-match function. Without our dedicated sponsors who support the club both financially and in kind as well as our major stakeholders in the City of Vincent, Football West, and many other local organisations we would not be able to sustain operating a community club like ours for the benefit of the wider community. On behalf of the board and our members we thank you all for your ongoing support. It was amazing last Saturday to be part of celebrating another State Cup win in addition to qualifying for the FFA Cup round of 32. Our squad has been tested with injuries, suspensions, and other hurdles to contend with but a massive thanks must go out to everyone involved in both the first team and u20s squads who rose to the challenge and made our dreams into reality and retained the cup in our clubrooms. The players left everything out on the pitch, and I'd like to thank not only the boys who played in the final but everyone that has played a part this season. One of the most pleasing parts was looking into the crowd and seeing a sea of blue and white and the great representation of many of our junior players who idolise the first team players. Details will be out shortly about our round of 32 FFA cup match v A-League giants Adelaide United to be played on Tuesday August 24th at 7pm, at Dorrien Gardens. This is another match not to miss. Today should be another exciting encounter between Athena and Bayswater and I encourage you all to enjoy the club’s hospitality at the bar and canteen. Thank you and may the game continue to prosper! It’s admittedly been like a roller coaster in the past month but fortunately we celebrated with one of the highs of the season with a 1-0 victory over ECU Joondalup last weekend to retain the State Cup. With six key starters out of contention due to injuries and suspensions, our senior team showed character, grit, belief, and a dogged determination to win. No coach could ask for anything more. No coach could be any more prouder. However, that’s all in the past and today is a new day. We face Bayswater City who we know have come here for business. Our boys will show the same will and fight as they did last week. There is no room for resting on our laurels. Every match from here on is like a cup final if we want to finish the season strongly. Before I go, I would like to acknowledge the contribution from our sponsors, especially Lexus of Perth who in their second year have injected a significant level of support and investment into our football business. The same goes for all our sponsors. A deep thank you from all of us. On behalf of all the boys in the senior team, we hope you enjoy our hospitality and I hope we can celebrate with a win after the match! U20s COACH’S WELCOME Firstly I’d like to welcome Alun and his Bayswater U20s boys to Litis Stadium. Bayswater currently sit top of the league and coming off the back a state cup win last week they’ll be brimming with confidence. Our last match against today’s opponents, we suffered a 3-1 defeat and since then have had a very turbulent season. Currently sitting just inside the top 4 is below where we want to be and losing the last 3 hasn’t helped our case! We look forward to trying to get back on track against Bayswater today in what I’m sure will be a good tussle. Congratulations to the first team boys on their cup win and it was a pleasure to see 6 of our boys involved in the squad on the night. All the best to the 18’s and first team today also. We extend a warm welcome to the players, coaches and supporters to Litis Stadium. ast game against Inglewood, we played very well but we were unable to come away with the win. Our efforts was good but as it has been with our young group, lapses of concentration in crucial areas is costing us dearly. When we played Bayswater in the first round we grounded out an exciting win, we expect Bayswater to be once again extremely tough today. We look forward to the challenge. Good luck to our First Team and U20s. Looking forward to seeing you all on the day.
