www.tchs.net TEURLINGS TRADITIONS / 3 “End of the School Year” greetings to each & every member of the TCHS Family of Faith!

As you know, Pope Francis has given the world a great gift in his proclamation of an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, which began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, 2015 - and will end on the Solemnity of Christ the King, Nov. 20, 2016. The scriptural focus for the Jubilee Year has been Christ's command from Luke 6:36, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Here at TCHS we have prayed for the grace to embrace the “ABC’s of Mercy”: 1) Ask for Mercy, 2) Be more Merciful, and have 3) Complete Trust in Jesus.

It is my sincere hope each citizen of the “Rebel Nation” has been enjoying all of the abundant graces and blessings of this powerful Pilgrimage of Mercy!

One of the many exciting blessings of this special Jubilee Year here at TCHS has been the ongoing construction of seven new classrooms and a new faculty workroom and lounge. This 1.2 million dollar addition has been divided into two wings, located on either side of our beautiful "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Chapel" (soon to be renamed the "SAINT Teresa of Calcutta Chapel.") The good news is the construction will be complete by the end of June - and the GREAT News is the Stuller Family Foundation has gifted our school with a matching grant of $250,000 to help us pay for this awesome addition! Therefore, our current challenge is to MAKE THE MATCH by raising $250,000 before the Foundation’s deadline of October of 2016.

One way to help achieve this goal was announced at our recent “Dancing with the REBEL Stars” fundraiser. For only $20,000 - individuals, families, clubs and alumni groups can secure “Naming Rights” for one of these new rooms. In other words, your donation will allow us to help you create a meaningful memorial for your family or group, while at the same time allowing you to help us choose a special Saint of the Church (whose name will grace the new room) to intercede for the students and teachers who will be praying, learning and growing in faith each time a class is called to order in this new, state of the art, life-giving space. Please prayerfully consider being a part of this impressive project! COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES Interested? Please contact our Development Director, Mrs. Aline Norwood

Trust my including the Louisiana Tuition Opportunity Programs for our Students prayers for you and yours as the Summer Season of Grace dawns on the horizon - and THANK YOU for all that you do to share your life and love with TCHS!

MICHAEL H. BOYER PRINCIPAL

Dear TCH graduates,

The Rebel Nation was like a well-oiled machine in 2016. State championships in volleyball, wrestling, baseball, jazz and hip-hop dance topped the list. State runners-up placements in girls’ tennis and cheerleading, along with seven district championships, showcased the competitive spirit of the school. How can that be topped? Well, the graduating seniors did just that, amassing over $8.6 million in scholarship offers, an all-time record for Teurlings Catholic!

This past year was also a record setter for Teurlings Catholic students participating in college dual enrollment classes. Juniors and seniors involved in our D.E. program enrolled in a total of 443 classes amounting to 1,329 hours of college credits. Of the 443 classes, students earned 287 grades of A and 148 B’s.

The building project on campus appears to be ahead of schedule, allowing teachers to move into the new classrooms during the summer months ensuring a smooth transition for the 2016-17 school year. The classroom wings on either side of the chapel will house the Theology department and a large teacher workroom. With the new prayer garden added to the front of the chapel, the entire area will become the spiritual center of our campus.

“Largest” and “biggest ever” were terms often used at Teurlings Catholic this year. The largest enrollment ever, the largest faculty ever (in numbers, not weight), the largest number of students honored at the Academic Pep Rally, the largest number of students to participate in comprehensive extra-curricular programs, and the list goes on! The size of Teurlings Catholic, however, has not changed the family-like, faith-based atmosphere that has been prevalent for the past sixty years.

Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel blessed Teurlings Catholic by celebrating the senior Baccalaureate Mass, as well as conferring diplomas for graduation. It was the most reverent and dignified graduation ever witnessed. All 153 graduates respectfully received their diplomas and shook hands with the bishop. He was VERY impressed with the liturgy, the graduation ceremony, the graduating seniors, and the Teurlings Catholic family. It was a great day to be a REBEL.

Once a Rebel, Always a Rebel!

Sincerely, Michael H. Boyer, TCH Principal

I used to practice saying, ‘David Begnaud, CBS News, New York’.” He felt fortunate to spend his first year as a freelance feature correspondent for the show CBS This Morning, Saturday. During that time, Entertainment Tonight came calling and he became the “hard news” correspondent for ET.

[email protected] or the past sixty years, Teurlings Catholic has proudly provided students with a top-quality education while F fostering an appreciation for the values of the Catholic Christian heritage in which they were born. With a freshman class of almost 200 enrolled for the fall, the projected enrollment will be over 800. By limiting the size of all future incoming classes to 200, TCH will stabilize its enrollment at 800. Although we do not aspire to be larger than 800, we have the desire and need to better accommodate the students who are currently enrolled at Teurlings Catholic. Bishop Jarrell accepted TCH’s proposal for seven classrooms surrounding the chapel and a centralized faculty workroom for a total cost of $1.2 million. Furnishings and equipment needed cost $20,000 per classroom. Anticipated completion date is Summer 2016. Raising a million dollars will not be easy. A recent blessing, however, has been bestowed! Teurlings Catholic was awarded a leading gift opportunity of $250,000 from the Stuller Family Foundation. For every dollar raised, the Stuller Foundation will match it. For every dollar you donate, the Stuller Foundation will your gift! Each contribution is greatly appreciated and makes a significant impact on the success of this project. We invite individuals, families, groups, i.e. alumni classes, community leaders, and businesses to unite in this challenge. Once a group or an individual reaches the gift plan level of $20K, they will have the opportunity to commemorate the contribution by naming a room. To make a donation, please make your check payable to Always A Rebel. If you are a graduate of TCH, be sure to note on the memo part of the check to which class you wish to designate your gift. Please mail your gift to: TCH “Always A Rebel” Campaign, 139 Teurlings Drive, Lafayette, LA 70501. Once a Rebel, Always A Rebel!

How does technology impact student performance?

 Hands-on activities engage students who are manual, visual, and auditory learners  Increased access to virtual labs, experiments, projects, videos, and games that excite students and get them interested in the subject Our technology resources have allowed us to diversify the electives  Supplemental material is available for we offer to students, especially those seeking to earn college credit. teachers when planning lessons  Digital textbooks are interactive, again engaging students directly in the learning process  Wide range of practice and study aids for students who need extra help  Research indicates students today, who have been exposed to electronic media since birth, learn better when exposed to multiple teaching approaches  TCHS students are known for their ability to write at the college level, thanks to the timed writing program implemented more than 10 years ago.

TEURLINGS TRADITIONS / 33 Over the years, Campus Ministry has evolved into various acts of service and faith formation, but more importantly, into a way of life for the TCH students, teachers, and families. Recently, the Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Chapel was off limits due to the construction of the new classrooms. A student was overheard saying “I can’t wait until we can spend time in the Chapel again; it feels like the heart of the school is missing.” Christ is present in all that we do and all that we are here at Teurlings. Our sincere hope is that His spirit truly is channeled in and through the Rebel family by way of service, prayer, and love because ultimately, our ministry is not only what we do, but who we ARE.

34 / TEURLINGS TRADITIONS Faith Formation is the heart of Teurlings Catholic High School. Pope Francis stated, “Go, do not be afraid, and serve.” Our Campus Ministry program dedicates itself to the formation of authentic Catholic disciples by encouraging students and faculty members to be Christ to one another and to live as Christian witnesses in service to others. All students are offered opportunities to evaluate their spiritual life and relationship with God through class retreats, various Sacraments, Adoration, and Rebel Revivals. Campus Ministry ‘Channels His Spirit’ by striving to bring out the gifts of each individual student and faculty member which will lead them to a deeper love for self, others, and God. Rooted in the Catholic Tradition, our program encourages participation in the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church, seeking to develop lifelong faith formation.

They’ve become lawyers, doctors, chiropractors, broadcast journalists, speech therapists, medical research scientists, entrepreneurs, college professors, collegiate forensics coaches, and educators. And some of us, myself included, have become the next generation of Teurlings Speech and Debate coaches.

We no longer get to hold meetings in the chapel; I’ll admit, I do miss that space. My co-coach, Craig Wall, and I still hold our meetings on Wednesdays, and I’m still surrounded by trophies, philosophy books, play scripts, and pictures of kids in suits. This year, we had 39 students participate in speech and debate. We Written by Arielle Latiolais (TCH ‘08) had numerous local champions, a Harvard I remember my very first Wednesday meeting. We’re keeping the legacy going. nervous about what I was about to get myself into; but after hearing Ms. Surratt welcome us, I knew I wouldn’t just be part of a team--I would be part of a legacy.

In 1997, Josette Surratt took over as the head Speech and Debate coach at Teurlings Catholic High. The team had existed for some time, but over the next 10 years, Ms. Surratt would turn it into a force. During her reign, the team won eight Louisiana state championships in addition to countless individual local and state championships in interpretation events, such as Oral Interp and Dramatic Interp, and in forensic events, such as Original Oratory, Lincoln- Douglas Debate, and Cross Examination Debates.

The team was not only a local powerhouse, it had a presence on the national circuit as well. At prestigious invitational tournaments such as the Harvard Invitational and the Glenbrooks Invitational, Teurlings competitors became semifinalists, finalists, and champions in events like Dramatic Interp and Duo Interp. At national tournaments hosted by the National Catholic Forensic League and the National Speech and Debate Association (formerly the National Forensic League), Teurlings students ranked among the top competitors in the nation. In 2008, her final year as head coach, Ms. Surratt coached four students to the national stage--a semifinalist in Dramatic Interp, a semifinalist in Original Oratory, and a three- time-finalist Duo Interp team.

Though she likes her shiny trophies, Ms. Surratt doesn’t rely on them as the sole measurement of her students’ successes. As an activity, Speech and Debate instills communication skills students carry into their personal and professional lives. Alumni of the Teurlings Speech and Debate team have gone on to

Annual Appeal for the Enhancement of Technology The goal of an annual fund is to generate dollars to enhance the environment of learning at Teurlings Catholic. It is more than a dollar- raising campaign. It is designed to involve as many donors as possible, at whatever levels of giving they can participate, in a concerted educational focus. TEURLINGS TRADITIONS / 45 ROBBIE RICHARD “Catholic educational excellence is best summed up by Teurlings Catholic’s mission statement, ‘to channel his spirit.’ Our call as teachers is to channel God’s spirit into our students and help to bring out the very best in all they do.”

Robbie Richard graduated from TCH in 1996. After earning his degree in Social Studies education at UL Lafayette, he returned to Teurlings Catholic to teach and to coach students. After 13 years, he cannot imagine teaching in a better environment. “Teurlings Catholic has excelled in spirituality, academic performance, athletics, and in most every extracurricular activity.” Mr. Richard is a member of professional organizations including LA Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, and LA High School Athletic Association. He has also been recognized by the Lafayette Educational Foundation as an outstanding teacher.

From early mornings when he brings his two sons, future Rebels Alexander and Aaron to school at St. Genevieve, until late in the evenings when he leaves his athletic duties, Mr. Richard makes an impact on young adults. Students in his world history classes feel he makes learning easy. “He is loud, animated, and sometimes throws out random facts that stick in my memory,” says senior Asa Miller. “What he teaches is what is tested. Every day, before starting new information, he reviews what we learned on the previous day. His lectures are interesting and his PowerPoint presentations are POINTS, not lengthy texts.” The class motto of TCH’96, “People may doubt what we say, but they’ll believe what we do,” is still evident in all Mr. Richard does. “I hope that I have made a small contribution into making Teurlings a better place in the way that it has made a large impact on many parts of my life.” Yes, Mr. Richard, you have made and continue to make, a tremendous contribution to Teurlings Catholic.

JANET PEPPER RAY

For over a decade, Janet Pepper Ray, has been “Channeling His Spirit” for the glory of God at Teurlings Catholic. She and her husband, Glenn, have six children - Garrett TCH ’06, Jordan TCH ’08, Jenna TCH ’10, Jillian TCH ’12, Grant TCH ’15 and Jorja Grace TCH ‘28. “My husband and I are thankful to God for the opportunity to give our children the gift of a Catholic education. We pray they never take God’s gifts for granted but use them to make the world a better place.”

Janet has been President of the Rebels Academic Backers Club for the past two years, chairperson of the RABC raffle for seven years, and has been a cog pin on numerous other committees such as Open House, Catholic Schools Week, Teacher Monthly Luncheons, and the Teurlings All Sports Club Dance. She was also seen on Friday afternoons serving pre-game meals to the Rebel Football team.

“Teurlings Catholic has become an extension of our family and has been instrumental in teaching values we hold dear; God first and family second, be honorable, find happiness in all you do, and live a life of service. The faculty and staff of TCH have had such compassion and the best interest of every student at heart. The Catholic education our 6 children have received, and are receiving, not only prepares them mentally and physically, it prepares their soul.” Mrs. Ray is a loving part of the heart and soul of all at Teurlings Catholic.

46 / TEURLINGS TRADITIONS KENT MASSON “He is dedicated to what he does and loves what he does,” says one TCH student about our Teacher of the Year.

Kent Masson became an English teacher and coach (Wrestling Head Coach and Football Running Backs Coach) at Teurlings Catholic High School in 2003. Since then he has brought three wrestling club championship titles to the school. He also challenges his students academically in ways to make them better writers. “Coach Masson is a great teacher. He understands how to interact with students and brings out the best in every student.”

The former television journalist is committed to the advancement of writers at Teurlings Catholic. His focus is to assure, “students graduate from TCH with the ability to create quality papers, critiques, and analysis that will carry them through their college careers.”

Kent attained his B.A. from Southeastern Louisiana University. He is a member of National Teachers of English (NTE), the Louisiana chapter of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (LAAPHERD), and the Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA).

He and his wife Jan have two children, Bryant, a TCH sophomore, and Elizabeth “Libby” who is nine years old. They are members of St. Genevieve Church. Kent is a Eucharistic Minister and former member of the Knights of Columbus in Kenner, LA. The Brother Martin High School alum has been associated with Catholic education for most of his life. “I honestly believe the most positive influence a teacher or administrator can have on a student is the development of a child’s faith. When you help students learn English, math, science, you are preparing them for a bright future and flourishing careers. When you fuse the Catholic faith within those areas, you are developing a Christian, which is a vital part of our society.”

ROBERT BOUDREAUX

Teurlings Catholic is proud to honor Robert Boudreaux as Outstanding Achiever/Supporter of the Year. Robert embodies the character and passion of a true Rebel. He graduated from TCH in 1969. His wife, the former Elizabeth “Liz” Thibodeaux, is also a TCH ’69 graduate.

Their children graduated from Teurlings: Lynzie 1999 and Bo 2008, who is also married to a TCH graduate, Jordan Ray 2008. Their first grandchild, daughter of Lynzie and her husband Ryan, is named Genevieve (which some say, practically pre-destines her to become a Rebel when she grows up.)

The Teurlings tradition goes beyond Robert and his immediate family. Both of Robert’s brothers and a sister are Teurlings Catholic graduates. Robert’s mother retired from TCH after working in the school cafeteria for many years.

“We are all graduates of TCH!” he proudly states. “Teurlings Catholic High School has provided an outstanding education for success for our family”.

Robert has chaired the Rebel Open for the TCHS Foundation for almost two decades. For the past several years, he has been a volunteer Rebel golf coach. After his very first year of coaching, the LHSAA recognized his committee for bringing the state high school golf championships to the Acadiana area and honored the committee with its “Super Sport Award.” Other accolades include being selected to serve on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as well as serving as State Director for Louisiana USSSA for twenty years, and as USSSA National President for two terms. He was presented the “Presidents” award in 1982 and 1993, one of only three people to ever win this prestigious award twice.

Various TCH committees, including RABC and TASC have had Robert at the helm. He exudes great energy and motivates others to join in whatever activity he is working. Robert is the State Office Administrator for the Knights of Columbus. He and Liz are members of Sacred Heart Church in Broussard, LA. TEURLINGS TRADITIONS / 47 KYNNEDIE MALOZ

Kynnedie maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career at Teurlings Catholic and scored 32 on her ACT. She was a member of the BETA Club and she made it to semi-finals in the district Quiz Bowl contest. As a varsity volleyball player, she helped secure the school’s State Championship title for two years in a row. She was also named as All-District defensive basketball player. “The little things that I do in my daily life are a constant reminder of the impact my grandfather has had on my life, and I hope to make a similar impact on someone else’s life one day.” There is no doubt she is a loving force to be reckoned with as she quotes Bill Wilson, “to the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.”

Kynnedie is the daughter of Amy Maloz of Lafayette.

48 / TEURLINGS TRADITIONS ELIZABETH HEINTZ

Teurlings Catholic High School Student of the Year Elizabeth Heintz has used her four years at TCH to develop her personal philosophy: Be the best you can be but remember you are still unique, and simply, be self-confident in who you are. “My favorite song, More Beautiful You by Johnny Diaz has become my theme. The song reminds us true beauty is not found on the surface, but within. We are all beautiful in the eyes of God, regardless of our size, hair, skin, or features; self-confidence comes from that knowledge.”

The daughter of Joe (TCH ’92) and Melanie Heintz, Elizabeth admits she comes from a Catholic family, deep rooted in their spiritual beliefs. “Faith is important to not just me, but to my entire family, not only here at school or at St. Elizabeth Church (where she is a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Altar Server) but in my entire life.” Her faith and strong pro-life beliefs led Elizabeth to Camp Joshua last year and ultimately to work with the Diocesan PULSE movement. She served as president of the TCH Rebels for Life, vice president of Athletes for Christ, Chaplain of the Beta Club and was a member of the TCH Retreat Ministry Core Team, as well as a Eucharistic Minister and morning prayer leader.

At 4’11”, she may be a foot shorter than many of her opponents on the basketball court, but she is known for her aggressive defense and accurate three-point shot. In track, she excels in the jump, 800-meter run and as a member of the relay teams and was named to the All State Academic Composite Teams in Basketball and Track.

Academics, of course, are also important to Elizabeth, as the daughter of two educators and granddaughter of two more. She has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA not only at TCH, but since she entered school. “In addition to the strong faith formation at TCH, the Dual Enrollment Program has been a strong motivating factor for me,” she notes. Elizabeth opted her senior year to take two additional college courses on her own time in addition to her regular schedule, so she will finish high school with 33 hours of college credit in English, history, French, psychology, and fine arts survey.

Attending Girls State at Northwestern last summer and being elected as Secretary of State, Elizabeth notes, also added to her self-confidence and helped prepare her for leadership roles not only here at TCH, but at the next level. Elizabeth was also selected as September Rebel of the Month and was a member of the 2016 TCHS Homecoming Court. She has represented TCHS at the Literary Rally all four years and has been offered academic scholarships to the University of Alabama, Spring Hill, Northwestern State, Tulane, UL, LSU, and LA Tech, and hopes to pursue her goal of medical school through attendance at either Spring Hill College in Mobile or Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.
