Guidelines to boost extracurricular activities in schools through YEC are as lows- i. in schools are an instrument to develop life skills, build self-esteem, develop self-confidence and resilience and counter negative emotions of stress, shame and fear. ii. YEC in schools, after school hours are an instrument to develop skills other than academic abilities in different areas. iii. Students can excel in their skills as per their choice and abilities in the clubs. The learning enhances their capability to combat the challenges in their future life. iv. The learning of children is enhanced in a peer group and also makes a positive impact on their local community and the world. v. The diversity among children in terms of urban, rural, caste, class, religion, region, language, cultural beliefs, disability, gender, sexual orientation needs to be acknowledged and appreciated. vi. Children need to be trusted, appreciated and respected. vii. School is a place for identifying and nurturing the inherent talents in children. viii. Children will be provided opportunities to think critically and solve problems logically. ix. Activities will enhance the physical, mental, emotional and social well being of learners. x. Involvement of all stakeholders, particularly teachers, parents and community is crucial. They should be sensitized to the needs and concerns of children and young people so as to respond to them in positive ways. xi. It will lead to better utilization of school infrastructure and other facilities such as play ground, library, sports equipments etc. xii. The students can participate in activities such as debates, music, arts, sports, reading, physical activities after school hours and during vacation. These would help in utilising the idle school infrastructure particularly playing fields, sports equipment and libraries which in turn will help the students to develop hobbies, skills and interest they might not otherwise be able to explore. xiii. The school Principal given attractive nomenclature such as "Green Brigade", Young Ambassadors" etc Vice Principal will be in-charge of YEC. One teacher will be assigned as a nodal person on rotation basis, who would stay back after school hours to facilitate the club activities. xiv. Eco Clubs will carry out activities related to water conservation and creating awareness on water conservation. xv. The students of classes III to V can be members of the YEC in the Primary schools and the students of classes VI to X can be members of the YEC in the Upper Primary and Secondary schools. f xvi. The members of the YEC can be provided caps/badges/T-shirts/scarves etc for inculcating a sense of pride in their being a member of this prestigious club. xvii. The YEC In-charge, with the help of class teachers of these children shall ascertain their area of interest. xviii. There shall be two periods allotted per month for YEC activities. xix. The YEC members shall be awarded certificates in the annual function for being members of this prestigious club. B. A list of suggested activities is given below- a) Eco garden - Sectioning of the garden area of the school and assigning sections to the YEC members to plant and maintain a club garden. b) Rakhi tying to the trees — Encouraging the students to tie the knot of care to plants and trees for their protection and promising to safeguard them. c) Tree Plantation - Each visiting dignitary can also be invited to plant a tree when they visit the school. d) Potted Plants - The HoS can gift potted plants nurtured by the YEC to dignitaries visiting the school. e) Composting activity - Teaching students how to make organic manure to promote organic farming. This is beneficial not only for the environment but also for human and animal health. f) First Aid Know how - Organising a workshop on 'First Aid' for orienting students on First Aid measures. The workshop can comprise of a healthy discussion and demonstration on how to give first aid in emergency situation like heat and cold stroke, head injuries, bleeding, fracture, etc. in school premises. g) Saving water - As part of the Water Conservation exercise, YEC members can be given recess duty as Water Monitors near water points to advise children not to waste water, not to leave taps running etc. h) Conserving water - Various activities like drawing, painting, poetry recitation, poster making, rallies in neighbourhood area etc can be held to create awareness about conservation of water. i) Recycle and Reuse - Since majority of children come from slum areas where water is supplied through water tankers, YEC teams can be formed under the ti supervision of teachers, SMC members to enlighten the community about regulated use of water, concept of recycling of water, sanitation and hygiene issues involved in putting in dirty pipes directly into the potable water etc. j) Channelizing the waste water - The Head of School may involve the Delhi Jal Board officials in the neighbourhood to designate Water Points where water tankers are stationed each day and involve the community in creating a patch of greenery in the vicinity by channelizing the water that spills over from the tankers into that area. k) Segregating waste - Waste segregation means dividing waste into dry and wet waste on the basis of biodegradable and non- biodegradable. Encourage waste segregation in classrooms by having a paper bin as well as a general waste bin. I) Best out of waste - To raise awareness among students regarding not to throw used things which can be used in different ways to make decorative pieces, wall hangings, storage boxes etc. This helps to reduce, reuse and recycle too. m) Go Green: Encourage the students of YEC to promote use of paper bags and no plastics. G - Generate less waste R- Recycle everything that cannot be reused E - Educate the community on eco-friendly options E - Evaluate the environmental impact of actions N- Nourish discussions and activities that integrate environmental education into existing curriculum C. The expected outcome of this initiative is- 1) YEC will help in utilizing the idle school infrastructure in particular, playing fields, sports equipments and libraries after school hours for productive activities which will help students pursue their own interests and develop self- confidence as they explore their talents. 2) This would also improve enrolment and retention. 3) The YEC in the schools would create a platform for experiential learning by enabling understanding of concepts of science & technology, bio-medical knowledge. D. The list of schools where YEC funds has been allocated by Ministry of Education is placed from Annexure I to III. E. All the Heads of concerned schools mentioned in lists placed from Annexure I to III will initiate the activities of the YEC as and when schools reopen, complying with Covid-19 Guidelines regarding social distancing, sensitization etc and submit a compiled report of the activities undertaken in the YEC along with photographs and video clippings to the concerned DURCCs of their respective district through mail by February, 2021. F. The DURCCs are hereby directed to compile the reports of their respective districts G. The YEC Reports received from the Districts shall be compiled at SS-HQ level by Ms. Sonia Sharma (IT Assistant) and the compiled State Level Report shall be uploaded on the Shagun Portal, MHRD after approval of Principal Secretary (Education) /Chairman, EC-UEEM.
