REFLECTION FOR TRINITY 5 Despite the grey skies and the odd shower, it’s summer – it must be because Wimbledon is on! Henman Hill or Murray Mount, strawberries and cream, Sue Barker, Boris Becker, Centre Court, the crowds, the players, the iconic BBC music. British players are doing well– Evans, Norrie, Raducanu all through to the next round (at time of writing!). Andy Murray has wrung every emotion out of us in a four-setter followed by a five-setter. After slogging through three or four hours of play there are the post-match interviews, which this year are taking place court- side, and broadcast on the court speaker system for the crowd to hear. But it’s only the winner who is interviewed on court. The loser has to gather up their bags and walk off to the changing rooms alone, not really sure if the cheering and applause is for them or still for the winner. After their play and entertaining of the crowds, they leave alone and possibly feeling slightly rejected. When Jesus spoke in the synagogue of His hometown, the people were amazed at His teaching and wisdom, more it seems because of who His family were: Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren't His sisters here with us?" And they took offence at Him. He was rejected by the people that He knew, had lived amongst. And He was to go on to be rejected by the crowd in Jerusa- lem before being led out to the cross at Calvary. Peter, in his first letter says: As you come to Him, the Living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:4-5 (ANIV) Others may reject Jesus, but we know that He is the Living Stone, the Cornerstone of our faith, and through Him we are being built into church offering spiritual sacrifices to our God. Christ alone, Cornerstone, weak made strong in the Saviour’s love. Through the storm, He is Lord, Lord of all.
