19th August

A fun morning with some beautiful singing especially from the parents and grandparents. Cheryl-Anne read the book “Joey Counts to Ten” written by Sally Morgan and Ambelin Kwaymullina. A story of Joey and his mother counting different Australian animals as they go about their day.

Keeping with the number theme we then played a game where each child did a lucky dip for an action card and then found a hidden bottle top with a number on. The child then had to do the action the number of times the bottle top was showing. Such as jump up and down five times, clap your hands three times etc.

Lots of giggles were had by all!

2nd September

The book for last week’s Storytime was “The big fish’” by Pamela Allen. The children were quite clever this week and sang ‘Open, shut them’ very, very fast. This song is requested by the children every week. It is great to see the children having an input on what they enjoy at Storytime. Even Archie’s Grandad & Nanna were spotted having a Great Time!

The activity to go with the book this time was a fishing game that Lil’ Tigers generously let us borrow for the morning! This involved the children attempting to catch 3D fish with their fishing rods which both had magnets on them. A lot of fun was had by all!

NEXT STORYTIME IS ON FRIDAY 16 SEPTEMBER In the Library at the Dowerin Community Resource Centre at 9:30 am

Bendigo Bank in our Community

It was a pleasure last Wednesday morning as a representative of Bendigo Bank, to be involved in presenting awards at the Dowerin District High School assembly and be invited to the opening of the new Home Economics room. I started the morning off by greeting the dedicated savers for school banking which is every Wednesday morning during the school terms from 8.30-9 am on the primary school verandah. It is a joy to be able to greet and interact with the children each week. Every year we have the tough decision of deciding who receives the “Most Consistent Saver Award”. This was the award Jenni Barlow (Goomalling Bendigo Branch Manager) and myself presented at the assembly which was given to joint winners - Talia & Linkon Brown. Well done to you both. These two have not missed a beat when it comes to deposit- ing their money every Wednesday. It is a delight to see such healthy future habits devel- oping. Also well done to everyone else who banks their money. Just remember….every little bit counts! Directly after the assembly was the grand opening of the Home Economics room. I had never experienced the old deteriorating Home Economics room, however I did get to witness a photo of the ‘before’ shot which allowed me to really see what an amazing result the ‘after’ job is! Jenni and myself enjoyed delicious morning tea while checking out the clever class that were cooking. It was great to have a chat with all the children to find out what delicious goodies they were preparing with the lovely produce from their own Veggie garden. I look forward to hearing what other great future plans are ahead of us for the school. A credit to all involved!

when host Meri Fatin discusses The Windy Season with Sam Carmody.

A young fisherman is missing from the crayfish boats in the West Australian town of Stark. There's no trace at all of Elliot, there hasn't been for some weeks and Paul, his younger brother, is the only one who seems to be active in the search. Taking Elliot's place on the boat skippered by their troubled cousin, Paul soon learns how many opportunities there are to get lost in those many thousands of kilometres of lonely coastline. Fierce, evocative and memorable, this is an Australian story set within an often wild and unforgiving sea, where mysterious influences are brought to bear on the inhospitable town and its residents.

Sam Carmody is a real literary talent, with an artist's inquiring mind and a natural feel for the beauty and toughness of language. Now we just need these tourists to travel inland on their way back to Perth from Cervantes, to check out our wildflowers, granite rocks and very soon - ride on an old fashioned train! Nearly 80,000 international visitors came to "Australia’s Coral Coast", defined as the coastal strip between Cervantes and Exmouth, and spent $104 million in the year to June 2016, an increase of 47% .

The Member for Durack MP Melissa Price said the International Visitor Survey, just released, shows more international tourists are visiting the region of Durack and are staying longer and spending more. Produced by Tourism Research Australia, for the 2015-16 financial year, the survey shows 78,000 international tourists visited Australia’s Coral Coast, an increase of 25% from the previous year. Visitor nights also recorded growth, with international tourists staying 958,000 nights in Australia’s Coral Coast, an increase of 14%.

“This is great news for Durack and the 3,927 local tourism jobs. The survey shows Australia’s Coral Coast tourism industry continues to register strong growth – driving local jobs & economic growth. Tourism remains an important focus for the Turnbull Government, with our vibrant tourism sector forecast to continue its growth trajectory over the next decade.” Ms Price said.

To support the tourism industry to grow further the Turnbull Government has committed a record $629 million for Tourism Australia to market Australia overseas. Australia’s tourism industry is currently growing three times as fast as the rest of the Australian economy.

Warrior Wellbeing Article Too Strong and Too Silent

A very common issue I am called to help men with in the country is a seemingly “without notice separation” that leaves a dumbfounded male struggling to make sense of what just happened. Today women are more likely to be career orientated, more independent financially, more educated and empowered and divorce no longer carries the stigma it once did, and rightfully women no longer are as accepting of abuse or not getting their needs met.

Given this societal change there is even greater need for effective communication in relationships. Getting men to talk more is slowly changing, however, too often men tend to be stoic and un-communitive about how their relationship is going, “Too Strong and Too Silent”.

Relationships breakdown for many reasons for example: Emotional disconnection, differing views on finances; too much work; not enough time with the family; stonewalling; lack of respect; or not being appreciated; to name just a few.

If we don’t communicate what is going on within us, we are not resolving such issues and setting up our relationships to fail. A common quote is “ I tried but he just never listened” OR “I work hard every day, dawn to dusk to provide, I thought I was doing the right thing”.

If we talk about things as they arise, resolution is more likely. Men tend to be “ too silent” but again women can be as bad at communicating as well. I often hear comments like “if only she had said something” or “I didn’t know”. Chances are may-be we were told or didn’t want to deal with it or simply didn’t listen. We need to learn to communicate more and listening to your spouse or partner is paramount.

Here are 4 tips to improve listening to your spouse/partner:

Body language: you may say you’re listening to your spouse but the body language says otherwise. Body language accounts for 93% of communication. Face directly to each other, look into your spouse’s eyes. Be cautious about your pose, things like being fidgety or folding your arms, tends to give a message of disinterest.

Ask questions: asking questions shows your spouse you’re interested and heard what was said. eg. “so then what happened” or paraphrase “ so what you’re saying is …….”

Avoid one-upmanship: listen to the bad day story without jumping in with your worse bad day. Instead ask questions, listen and show interest, otherwise the message your spouse gets is you don’t really care.

Don’t try and fix it: this is a really good thing to remember especially for blokes. Men will often offer a solution to the problem and try to fix it. We really just need to listen and be engaged. Women prefer that blokes don’t jump in with their best solution unless asked.

Good effective communication is essential for a healthy relationship. don’t be TOO STRONG AND TOO SILENT

2016 Preliminary Final Dowerin V Calingiri

FIRSTLY! The weekend before last, Wyalkatchem hosted the Mortlock Medal Count for 2016… Wylie did a great job with a delicious luncheon and we came away extremely proud of our amazing Full Back Renae Pares who came away with Runner Up Fairest and Best for the Association. Congratulations ‘Paresy’ you are invaluable to our team! Fairest and Best for the Association went to Goomalling/Meckerings Erin Nielson.

To the Pre-Lim…Inspired by our AMAZING junior team…the seniors had some work to do to win against Calingiri on Sunday…

Calingiri and Dowerin drew twice in the home and away season, both teams offer a strong defence with some key personnel up forward. The scene was set for a great afternoon of hockey as Goomalling hosted the Preliminary Final for 2016 and both big cats lined up ready and raring to battle hard for a place in the big dance next week.

Dowerin took the centre pass straight into attack with the Tigers piling on the pressure early, with the sun beating down, a fast paced game ensued and a quick ball into the D found the stick of Nadine McMorran who struck it into the goals with serious precision - 1-0 to the Tigers but Calingiri weren’t going down without a fight.

The Cougars kept their heads up and some trademark big hits from full back Jocelyn King saw Calingiri’s forwards Blake and Debesha cause some headaches for the Dowerin backline but, Renae and Tayla had them all covered and the half time whistle came with some welcomed cloud cover and no further additions to the score line.

The half time Super Coach Jones distributed the jelly beans along with her words of wisdom…talk to each other, run hard and short passes….we were 1-0 up but we needed to cement our spot in the grand final– more goals were needed.

In the second half, the tables turned and it was the Cougars who came out firing, desperate to win that ball and even up the score line however Dowerin’s defence stood strong and some well executed passes and beautiful team work from each and every player, enabled the Dowerin forwards to go for a run, 2 goals in quick succession from Zjene Stratford sealed the deal for Dowerin and set the stage for a Grand Final rematch of 2015…but who will stand victorious?! –Time will tell! But the Tigers are 2014 hungry and ready to settle the score with neighbouring Goomalling BRING.IT.ON!

Thank you to all our amazing Dowerin supporters, we can hear each and every one of you and are proud of the sea of black and gold on the side line…what an amazing community we have. Best of luck to our fab team of Juniors in their Grand Final on Sunday as well as the A Reserves – let’s bring home 3 sets of winning medallions on Sunday at Wongan – GET YOUR GRRRR ON TIGERS!

You’d be forgiven for thinking Groundhog Day had hit Dowerin… Second Semi-Final, Dowerin takes on Goomalling, again. It seems to repeat itself this time most years, but given the nil-all draws from both encounters this season, the hunger certainly wasn’t lacking.

With field days done and dusted, either the volunteer recovery had improved or the Tigerette’s game preparation was on point with a bit more bounce in their step than previous years.

After a rugged-up warm-up, the girls took to the field looking to be aggressive on the ball and in the circle to gain the upper hand with early goals. After an initial turnover and a quick short corner for Goomalling, Dowerin reset and controlled the opening 20 minutes of the game, passing well into their attack and forcing some near misses and short corners which were unable to be converted. Defending the ball well kept it in Dowerin’s attacking half, however, after a clearing hit from Goomalling fullback, momentum swung and it was the Blues streaming down the field putting Dowerin on the back foot and the next 15 minutes were reversed with Goomalling’s near misses and short corners leaving the halftime score line at 0 – 0.

The second half repeated the first with a see-sawing of opportunities coming from both teams but the attacks being ably defended by the other, finishing the game at 0 – 0 and setting it up for 7.5 minutes each way of extra time.

The desperation did not cease, but when you want to score as much as defend goals, nothing will give and without a goal being scored in extra time, the goalie and 5 players who take the penalty stokes are put to the test.

Goomalling’s goalie too good on the day and even with some great and close saves by Bree, Dowerin were defeated 0 – 4 in the penalty shootout.

Our focus now shifts to playing Calingiri this weekend, again with 2 draws on the board this season, it’s sure to be a great game. And as our finals experience shows, Dowerin evidently place a high value on a prelim game in place of an additional training run

See you on the sidelines!

(Previous Week’s) Dowerin/Wyalkatchem News RESERVES 2nd Semi Final vs. Gingin (Game Played 28th August) DWFC 4.4.28 def. by Gingin 9.10.64 GOALS: M. WARD 2, T. MORRELL 2 BEST: M. COLLARD, R. CARMODY, J. NAUGHTON, L. OLIVER, J. NELSON

I usually like to try throw a few jokes in and give a fair reflection of the game in this weekly column. If I were to do that today I would have submitted a blank page. Instead I was allowed to focus on why I thought it went so wrong. If you aren’t a player spare yourself 5 mins and don’t read any further. The previous 14 games are nothing more than a filter to separate the rubbish teams from the reasonable teams. Finishing top two entitles you to a second chance in case of a screw up on game day, and screw up we did on every level.

Finals are the reason you go through the preseason (some) and the regular season matches. On Sunday it was as if that had not registered with some players. You need to remember it is not a right but a privilege to wear the Yellow n Black Jersey. You aren’t just representing yourself, you are out there representing the 21 other blokes around you, the players who missed out, the support staff and the DWFC as a whole. The jumper should be worn with pride and I think there are some players who have to concede they perhaps did not do so.

Walking into the rooms Sunday I did not get the vibe I expected being a semi-final. I also feel that there was complacency, blokes thinking “oh so’n’so will win it for us”, or “we have a good team on paper we will win”. That attitude is bull$*it and will get us no where, there can be no reliance on certain players come finals, all 22 have a role to play and should find that bit extra from the standard they deliver during the year. there were some mitigating circumstances pre-game that did throw the plan into a little chaos, with potentially two of the more influential names being ruled out (due to some rather tardy organisation in the lead up) but that is another story for another day, it doesn’t mean that the 22 that take to the field cannot get the job done, of course they can, we have beaten these blokes twice in 6 games. That being said they didn’t finish top of the ladder by chance, and we knew they would be out to square the ledger.

Now on to the game, I haven’t got a huge amount to say positive from the match. I know the backline saw a truck load of the ball and some decent performances down there. And baring the 2nd quarter with the aid of a strong breeze where we kicked 4 goals 3 out of our 4.4 for the game, we were horrible. No you don’t need to wipe your glasses or have eyes checked, you read correctly. 1 point in 3 quarters of football, including not a single solitary score in the second half. Guys panicked under pressure giving away unnecessary free kicks, fired off errant kicks and generally fumbled the ball. I even saw people not commit to contest, no room for that in this team. Some guys who I thought were admirable in defeat were Luke 'Kimbo' Oliver who shouldered the ruck all day and fought hard, Mitch Collard was solid through the middle (no pun intended) and the geriatric coach toiled hard up forward with limited opportunity. Besides that there was no talk, limited pressure and a lack desperation to win each contest.

Honestly last Sunday was an embarrassment on so many levels. Now on the positives, we played well for periods during the season to finish top two and get an opportunity to redeem ourselves this weekend coming. Let’s not screw this up boys. Let’s have a solid week on the track and come Sunday to Goomalling (a happy hunting ground in recent years) fit and firing, lets earn our way to the Grand Final. Go Tigers!!!
