Everton Vieira Barbosa ..................................................................... 231-233 EDITORIAL É com enorme dedicação e esforço que a Revista história, histórias traz a público o dossiê "Quadrinhos em perspectiva histórica: temas e abordagens", organizado pelo professor doutor Ivan Lima Gomes da Universidade Estadual de Goiás (UEG). Reunindo 12 artigos de caráter interdisciplinar, esse dossiê revela o estado atual das pesquisas e discussões acadêmicas sobre as Histórias em Quadrinhos (HQ’s) no Brasil, na França e na Argentina. Trata-se de importantes estudos e reflexões sobre as dimensões históricas, políticas e culturais desse gênero discursivo. Na seção de resenhas, em sintonia com o tema desse dossiê, Ivan Lima Gomes trata do livro Comics and the senses: a multisensory approach to comics and graphic novels (2014), de Ian Hague; enquanto Maycon André Zanin trata do livro Representações do Feminino nas Histórias em Quadrinhos (2015), organizado por Amaro Xavier Braga Júnior e Valéria Fernandes da Silva. Encerrando este volume, trazemos a resenha de Everton Vieira Barbosa Correio sobre o livro Nas memórias de Aurélia: cotidiano feminino no Rio de Janeiro do século XIX (2015), de autoria de Samuel Albuquerque. O serviço de revisão dessa edição contou com recursos financeiros do 3 Departamento de História e do Programa Pós-Graduação em História da Universidade de Brasília. ISSN 2318-1729 APRESENTAÇÃO De mídia desacreditada à forma de expressão cult, muita coisa aconteceu com as histórias em quadrinhos (HQs). O fato é que a indústria cinematográfica, editoras e a internet se renderam aos quadrinhos nos últimos anos. E assim também a academia. Certamente tal fato não é de todo novo: desde os anos 1960 os quadrinhos já chamavam a atenção de nomes como Umberto Eco, Luc Boltanski, Marshall McLuhan e Pierre Bourdieu. Neil Gaiman relembra com certo cinismo e ironia “(...)[d]aqueles remotos dias de felicidade e prosperidade antes de cada Universidade ter um curso sobre „O Romance Gráfico‟1”. O estabelecimento dos quadrinhos enquanto tema de estudos na universidade é bem claro no hemisfério norte. Todos os componentes usualmente esperados para o reconhecimento acadêmico e social de uma área de estudos podem ser encontrados. Nos mundos anglo-saxão e franco-belga, encontram-se pesquisadores que se reconhecem como comics scholars e que integram uma comunidade acadêmica de comic studies, reunidos em associações2 e contam com uma série de periódicos especializados em HQs3. Em 2009 foi lançado o primeiro reader sobre o tema, logo seguido por outros4. Editoras acadêmicas como University Press of Mississipi, Routledge e Palgrave 4 Macmillian contam com séries exclusivamente dedicadas aos quadrinhos, contribuindo para boa parte da bibliografia sobre o tema que não para de crescer. Acima de tudo, o melhor é constatar o esforço pelo estabelecimento de diálogo entre ambos os mundos.     Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

    Jacaeber Kastor: Psychedelic Sun By Carlo McCormick In turns perplexing, disorienting, wondrous and utterly beguiling, Jacaeber Kastor’s drawings make you look, look again and then still more, trying to find your way in their miasmic magic until at last, well, you discover the special pleasure of being truly lost. And when you think you’re done, when you’ve decoded the esoteric and abstract, conjured all the forms and meanings from these oceans of latency, answered the call of otherness as if it were the sphinx’s riddle- turn the work or flip your head, around and around, because there is no single perspective to read Kastor’s psychedelic topography: it is an entwined and constantly unfolding omniverse that has no right side up or upside down. If, in the course of your wanderings through Kastor’s meandering poetics of line and space, you come across the unexpected, the oddly familiar or the impossibly alien- for indeed you surely will, quite possible all at once with overwhelming simultaneity- and you ask yourself how did you even come to get here, you might also ask how indeed did this artist arrive at just such a place him- self. Make no mistake about it, Jacaeber Kastor is an intrepid voyager of body and mind, an adventurer without destination or designation, a man without return for even when he has somehow been there before he understands it as different, everything nuanced with the subtle shifts of impercep tible change, actuality always just beyond the tiny grasp of appearance, reason or replication. His art, like the convolutions of a restless mind guiding the inspired hand of uncertainty, is the tracings of a mind- traveler, a map to the nowhere that is everywhere, something so personally idiosyncratic that it marks a shared commons where likeness meets in a zone of compatible dissimilarity.

On September 8, FWMoA will open Litmus Test: Works on Paper from the Psychedelic Era, followed by the opening of All Access: Exploring Humanism in the Art of Chuck Sperry a week later on September 15. The Psychedelic Era was, among many things, a cultural frontier for colors and imagery. Music, politics, and drugs ignited an unprecedented expansion of art revolving around these elements. From Berkeley College to the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, young idealists organized and the art of the era came to fruition. This exhibition will be our bridge to that time, showcasing a psychedelic era works on paper. The poster work and ephemera of Gary Grimshaw and the photography of Leni Sinclair will showcase the art that poured from that time and place. Blotter sheets from Mark Mothersbaugh, H.R. Giger, S. Clay Wilson, Chuck Sperry, and more will represent the creative fuel for many of the artists of the time. Also featured will be the work of the poster artists of the time: Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin, and Alton Kelley.
