With David Miller leaving the Mayor’s position, the race was wide open. There have been a preponderance of right-wing candidates proposing tax cuts, elimination of public service jobs, contracting out and privatization in the guise of “cost efficiencies”, and numerous other wild schemes that do not bear up under scrutiny. Calm.ca Yet, the public seems to have ridden a wave of general disgruntlement, and shown support (to date) for many of these negative, harmful campaigns. ETT, as part of the larger collective, the Toronto & York Region Labour Council, has chosen to endorse Joe Pantalone for Mayor . Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone is a veteran of municipal politics and has played a key role in promoting and shaping the Toronto of today, with so many of its progressive measures. Joe Pantalone continues to promote a positive vision for this city. Joe has earned our support! ETT members should familiarize themselves with the endorsed candidates for councilor and trustee, as well. Make sure to vote on Election Day, or at an Advance Poll. Make sure that your friends and family know who the endorsed candidates are, and encourage them to vote. Help get these endorsed candidates elected by assisting in their campaigns. Volunteer some of your time for canvassing, phoning, packaging or sorting or mailing flyers, or ask for and put up a lawn sign (available after October 3rd). This site is designated “Employment Area” in the Toronto Official Plan. The proposed business operation does not fall within the scope of this land use designation, and the proposal therefore does not maintain the general intent and purpose of the Official Plan. The site is zoned General Industrial (MG) and Vehicle Service (VS) in the Golden Mile Employment District Zoning By-law. The site is also specific Exception120 that overrides the uses in the Vehicle Service zone. This zoning omits Vehicles Sales Operation from the list of permitted uses. The requested variance therefore does not maintain the general intent and purpose of the zoning by-law. The variance is also not desirable for the appropriate use of land.     Contested Streets: A Case Study Approach to Understanding Bicycle and Car Politics in Toronto, Canada by Jennifer Tannis Hill A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Geography and Planning University of Toronto © Copyright by Jennifer Hill 2010 Contested Streets: A Case Study Approach to Understanding Bicycle and Car Politics in Toronto, Canada Jennifer Tannis Hill Master of Arts Department of Geography and Planning University of Toronto 2010 Abstract Using qualitative interviews, this thesis examines bicycle and car politics in Toronto, Canada to understand: i) how automobility affects those engaged in contesting and supporting cycling initiatives; ii) why the installation of cycling infrastructure has been politicized; and iii) whether strategies used by cycling activists are effective. The paper concludes that contemporary cultural and economic values surrounding automobility are visible in those engaged in bicycle and car politics. Findings suggest that the politicization of efforts to install cycling infrastructure arise due to how these values manifest themselves in the political realm, and the interrelationship between a lack of coherent transportation policy, the institutionalization of automobiles in planning and a ward-based decision-making system that entrenches suburban and urban biases.
