6 The Evangelical Quarterly O'Callaghan's Fragments: Our Earliest New Testament Texts? by Paul Garnet In recent issues we have made some editorial reference to the claim by Professor Jose O'Callaghan that he has identified portions of Mark and other New Testament books in the Greek fragments from Qumran Cave 7. Here an appraising look is taken at this claim by Dr. Paul Garnet, an evangelical scholar who once studied under the editor in the University of Sheffield and is now Assistant Professor in the Depart ment ofTheological Studies in Loyola College, Montreal. 1. Q'Callaghan's "Discovery" N MARCH of this year our newspapers published the exciting report I that papyrologist Fr. Jose O'Callaghan had claimed to have found a fragment of Mark's gospel, dating from about A.D.50, amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls. 1. Potential importance of the "find" If this discovery proves to be genuine, the implications would be of tremendous importance. No longer would our first-written gospel be dated A.D. 65-70, after the death of Peter and Paul, following the almost unanimous consent of New Testament critical scholarship. Instead, we would have to say that Mark was composed within 10-15 years of the events it purports to describe, within the life-time of most of the original eye-witnesses. Theories of a radically developing tradition before the date of writing would be exploded, for there would be not time for such a tradition to grow. Perhaps this is a good time to remind ourselves of the weaknesses in the case for insisting on a late date for Mark. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.28977/jbtr.2005.4.16.7 쿰란 사본과 성서 연구: 4Q285, 4Q448, 4Q246, 7Q5, 11Q13을 중심으로 / 송창현 쿰란 사본과 성서 연구 - 4Q285, 4Q448, 4Q246, 7Q5, 11Q13을 중심으로- 송창현* 머리말 20세기 최대의 고고학적 발견이라 불리는 사해 두루마리(Dead Sea Scrolls)는 1947년 봄 베두인 목동 무하마드 아드-디브에 의해 우연히 발견되었다. 그는 다 른 동료들과 함께 쿰란 근처에서 가축 떼를 돌보던 중 잃어버린 염소를 찾다가 동굴을 발견하였고 그곳에서 두루마리들이 발견되었다. 그 후 1956년까지 사해 서안 유대 광야의 여러 곳, 즉 키르벳 쿰란, 마사다, 와디 무라바트, 나할 헤베르, 나할 세일림, 나할 미쉬마르 등에서 발견된 고대 유대 사본들을 넓은 의미의 사 해 두루마리라고 부른다. 그리고 특히 사해의 북서 연안에 위치한 키르벳 쿰란 주변의 열한 개 동굴에서 발견된 850여 종류의 사본을 좁은 의미의 사해 두루마 리, 즉 쿰란 사본이라고 부른다. 쿰란 사본은 세 종류로 나누어지는데 즉, 구약성서의 사본들, 외경과 위경의 사본들, 그리고 쿰란 공동체와 관련 있는 사본들이다. 첫째, 쿰란에서는 에스델 서를 제외한 모든 구약성서의 사본이 200여 개 발견되었다. 이 성서 사본들은 레 닌그라드 사본(1008년경)이나 알렙포 사본(925년경)보다 1000년 이상 더 오래 된 것이다. 쿰란의 이 사본들은 구약성서의 정경이 확정되기 이전 단계의 본문으 로서, 마소라 본문, 70인역 본문, 사마리아 오경 본문 등과 함께 구약성서 본문 형성의 역사를 연구하는데 매우 중요한 자료이다. 둘째, 쿰란 사본의 발견 이전 에는 전혀 알려지지 않았거나, 그리스어, 에디오피아어, 라틴어 등 고대 언어의 번역으로만 알려졌던 구약성서의 외경(apocrypha)과 위경(pseudepigrapha)의 히 브리어, 아람어 원본들이 쿰란에서 발견되었다. 그리고 셋째, 전체 쿰란 사본의 약 삼분의 일은 쿰란 공동체의 조직, 생활과 사상을 반영하는 사본들이다. 이 사 본들을 통해 우리는 에세네파와 쿰란 공동체에 대한 더 정확하고 더 풍부한 지식 을 가지게 되었다. -

"Discovering the Dead Sea Scrolls on the High Street: Popular Perspectives on Ancient Texts" by Rev Dr Alistair I. Wilson, Highland Theological College, Dingwall Introduction 1997 marked (almost certainly) the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls, and so, once again, the significance of these ancient documents is a matter of great public interest. Already, volumes are being published to mark this jubilee in which highly competent scholars discuss questions of a technical nature.1 A recent (May 1998) international conference held at New College, Edinburgh, indicates that academic interest is as strong in Scotland as in the rest of the world. However, it is not only specialists who are interested in the Dead Sea Scrolls (hereafter, DSS). There is widespread public interest in the subject also, and this, in certain respects, is something to be warmly welcomed. This is true simply because of the value of the DSS to archaeology; they have been described as 'the greatest MS [manuscript] discovery of modern times',2 and it is always valuable to be aware of developments in our knowledge of the ancient world. However, the fact that during the 1990s the Dead Sea Scrolls have been at the centre of some of the most startling, dramatic, and controversial events imaginable, leading to massive publicity in both the academic and popular press, has surely added to the public interest in these documents. 1 One of the first of these is the important volume The Scrolls and the Scriptures, edited by S. Tyndale Bulletin 46.2 (1995) 251-285. THE DATE OF THE MAGDALEN PAPYRUS OF MATTHEW (P. MAGD. GR. 17 = P64): A RESPONSE TO C.P. THIEDE1 Peter M. Head Summary This article considers Carsten P. Thiede’s arguments concerning the date of P64 and suggests that he has both over-estimated the amount of stylistic similarity between P64 and several Palestinian Greek manuscripts and under-estimated the strength of the scholarly consensus of a date around AD 200. Comparable manuscripts are adduced and examined which lead to the conclusion that the later date is to be preferred. I. Introduction This article is a response to the arguments of Carsten Peter Thiede which were re-published in the previous issue of Tyndale Bulletin.2 The most significant and controversial of Thiede’s findings was that the Magdalen Papyrus of Matthew was written sometime before the end of the first century. This conclusion, and the palaeographical basis of Thiede’s arguments, will be the focus of our response. Introduzione La Grotta 7 di Qumran, esplorata nel Febbraio del 1955, conteneva ventuno frammenti di papiro e tre frammenti di argilla recanti l’impronta inversa di un papiro scomparso (7Q19,1,2&3) originatasi a causa del prolungato contatto del papiro con il blocco di terra solido. Una delle caratteristiche peculiari della Grotta 7 è che tutti i frammenti in essa rinvenuti sono scritti in greco (1). Questo è un dato piuttosto singolare in quanto tra tutto il materiale ritrovato a Qumran non ci sono che altri sei frammenti soltanto scritti in greco – tutti rinvenuti nella Grotta 4 – a fronte di centinaia e centinaia di documenti scritti in ebraico od aramaico. Nella Grotta 4 soltanto due dei sei frammenti ritrovati sono scritti su papiro, i restanti quattro sono su cuoio. Gli unici frammenti in greco provenienti da Qumran che sono stati attribuiti con un certo grado di sicurezza riguardano passi dell’Antico Testamento, secondo il testo della Bibbia dei LXX. Despite postal problems, not to speak of the political and military disorder, Fares Melki has never relaxed his efforts through lectures and leaflets and exhibits, to bring to his compatriots the true and lasting "Good News" figured on the Holy Shroud. This small book is the first of its kind in Lebanon. Its aim is objectively to present a general overview of scientific research that has been conducted up to the present. Five chapters follow a brief Introduction: A description of the Shroud as seen by the naked eye; Travels of the Shroud; Concordance with the Gospels; Scientific research; Position of the Church. In the Conclusion is a summary and two wishes: 1) permanent exhibition of the Shroud; 2) activation of studies by Eastern researchers. Jesus and Gospel
This page intentionally left blank JESUS AND GOSPEL ‘Gospel’ initially referred to oral proclamation concerning Jesus Christ, but was later used to refer to four written accounts of the life of Jesus. How did this happen? Here, distinguished scholar Graham Stanton uses new evidence and fresh perspectives to tackle this con- troversial question. He insists that in the early post-Easter period, the Gospel of Jesus Christ was heard against the backdrop of a rival set of ‘gospels’ concerning the Roman emperors. In later chapters Stanton examines the earliest criticisms of Jesus and of claims concerning his resurrection. Finally, he discusses the early Christian addiction to the codex (book) format as opposed to the ubiquitous roll, and under- mines the view that early copies of the gospels were viewed as down- market handbooks of an inward-looking sect. With half the material previously unpublished and the rest carefully gathered from sources difficult to access, this is a timely study with broad appeal. Graham Stanton is Lady Margaret’s Professor of Divinity, University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College. His publications include Gospel Truth? Quanto c'e di vero, di realmente accaduto in quello che riportano i Vangeli? E quanto è stato aggiunto dai loro autori per scopi pedagogici, o semplicemente propagandistici? Per chi sostiene la piena credulità storica dei Vangeli, Marco, Matteo, Luca e Giovanni scrissero in anni vicini ai fatti che raccontano, quando i testimoni oculari della vita di Cristo erano vivi e potevano smentirli, chiudendo definitivamente il conto con la neonata Religione. Tutto questo, però, non è successo, nonostante il clima ostile, 1'ambiente avverso, la persecuzione in corso. Segno che chi scrisse i Vangeli era consapevole di dire cose realmente accadute e non temeva di essere sbugiardato. La datazione dei frammenti antichi genera contrasti fra studiosi. Il fatto è comprensibile. Che i vangeli siano stati scritti in epoca vicinissima ai fatti che raccontano, quasi fossero una cronaca, mentre testimoni oculari erano vivi, è un dato che gioca certamente a favore della loro credibilità storica. -
