B’nai B’rith InternaƟonal Sets Outstanding Example of Archival CollecƟon Stewardship

On the 17th of July, in an OpͲEd arƟcle for the Washington Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Jeī Rubin wrote about B’nai B’rith InternaƟonal turning over its historͲ ical records to the American Jewish Archives. Ten years ago, when B’nai B’rith sold its headquarters building in Washington, the records were packed up and stored. DaƟng back to 1843, the collecƟon comprises more than 1 million docͲ uments, stored in a space of 800 linear feet. What a wonderful way to be sure that these records will be preserved and made available for research!

The Savannah chapter of B’nai B’rith was chartered in 1860. We are proud to claim our own Savannahian, Dr. William A. Wexler, who served as internaƟonal president from 1965 to 1971. When he died, his family gave some of his papers to our Archives. Dr. William Wexler (JVM 003, no. 1688)

Although our Archives might not compare in size with the extensive collecƟon in Washington, we hold records of B’nai B’rith’s Aleph Zadik Aleph (AZA) Savannah chapter circa 1939Ͳ1975, records pertaining to B’nai B’rith InternaƟonal in the William A. Wexler papers, and B’nai B’rith Youth OrganizaƟon photographs. The Savannah Jewish Archives welcomes donaƟons of any addiƟonal material that you may have, and invites you to research our collecƟons.
