WELLINGTON 1ST XV TRIP

Tauhara College are from Taupo and the two sides first met in 2009 at the Southern Skies tournament in Brisbane. Tauhara visited in 2010 and the first game for the Memorial Trophy was played. Caleb played for the RHS 1st XV in 2007 and was tragically killed in a car accident in 2009. Curtis Tui was a member of the Tauhara side but lost his battle with cancer in 2009. Both sides are keen to honour these players and build the ‘Traditional’ fixture between the schools.

The game, played at Mana College in Porirua, was played in windy conditions and Rangiora had the wind at their backs in the first half but were unable to take full advantage due to many handling errors and tough Tauhara defence. With the game in the balance at 3-0 to Rangiora a much stronger 2nd half effort was required. Leading from the front captain Kori Jones orchestrated a forward dominated game and patiently built pressure and territory. Two tries were scored as a result and the final score 13-0 to Rangiora. Try Scorers – Brandon Wentworth and Daniel Wills. Penalty to Freeman Eder.

‘It’s great to be building a history with Tauhara College. They are in a very similar position to Rangiora in that they are building a 1st XV and Rugby culture at their school. Both teams stayed together on the Marae and the experience gained was priceless’ said Manager Kerry Sullivan.

PRESS CUP – vs Waimea College 30/6 Waimea College set up their 13-5 win with a very good opening period in which they dominated possession and territory. Within the first 10 minutes they had scored through their hard working forward pack and banked a 3 point penalty as Rangiora again struggled to get out of first gear from the kick-off.

There were some bright patches in the first half but unable to get game patterns going the RHS side couldn’t hold possession for long enough to build any pressure and dogged defence from both sides meant that at times the game appeared very untidy.

After some strong words at halftime the home side up their efforts and began to look like a team as they strung together some good passages of play. With the forwards finally playing with some urgency the Waimea side began to go backwards and the result was a well taken try to prop Wiremu Puha-Tirikatene. At 5-8 the game was there for either side to take. Play centred on the middle of the field and defences held until Waimea took advantage of a defensive lapse that allowed their winger to score in the corner. 5-13.

With renewed energy Waimea were organised in defence and smart with ball in hand. As the clock ran down it was Rangiora who had to chase the game and although they looked likely to break the Waimea line on numerous occasions poor decisions and strong defence prevented this from happening.

Next game: Saturday 28th July, vs Nayland College at Nayland College, Stoke Kick-off 12 noon
