RHS RUGBY NEWSLETTER I S S U E 3 6 : 5 JUNE 2013 PRESS CUP Saturday 1 June 2013 RHS 1st XV vs St. Andrew’s College, Southbrook Park Following a disappointing performance against Christ’s College the preparation for this game was good and players responded well to the pressure put on them by the coaching team. This was a must win game for both sides and it was the home side that got off to the better start. Early pressure didn’t result in points and St Andrew’s showed their ability to score from long range following an excellent break by dynamic first five Martini Talapusi. Repeated infringements resulted in St Andrew’s having a player in the sin bin for ten minutes although Rangiora were only able to add 3 points during this period. A converted try to each side with Rangiora’s Makea Tupa scoring the first of his two tries (converted by Scott Allin) leaving the score 10-12 at the halftime break. The second half was equally tight with St Andrew’s threatening with a strong running game but Rangiora were up to it defensively and defended their line impressively. Rangiora’s backline finally put together a sweeping play with fullback Cameron Millward breaking on the outside and putting winger Louis Hermann-Watt into space from which he sprinted into score. St Andrews responded soon after to regain the lead and at 17-19 it was anyones game. The Rangiora forward pack were enjoying themselves by this stage and determined to get on top of their opposition drove from a lineout for Makea Tupa to dot down for his second. A pressure conversion was calmly slotted by first five Scott Allin and going into the final 10 minutes it was Rangiora ahead by the narrow margin of 22-19. St Andrew’s then threw everything at Rangiora and were unlucky not to score. Held up over the line and frustratingly close it was ultimately the Rangiora defence that would determine the final result. A tackle turnover gave possession back to Rangiora and play moved to the other end of the field where St Andrew’s gave away a penalty from which captain Brandon Wentworth took a quick tap and burrowed his way over for the final try. FMG Player of the Day went to Makea Tupa (in action above) who was outstanding throughout. The Principal’s Pin was awarded to Tom Taylor for his excellent work on and off the field throughout the week. Every player involved stepped and played to their potential today. They worked well as a team and deserved to come away with the victory. Captain Brandon Wentworth worked tirelessly through the week to build his team up for the game and backed this up with an outstanding performance on the field. ‘This is a big result as the boys now know they can play to this standard and win. More importantly it gives them first-hand experience of what it takes to win rugby games at this level. They were all exhausted at the end and had put everything into this game. The next challenge is to maintain the standard for next Saturday s game against Shirley Boys.’ Final Score: RHS 29 St Andrew’s College 19 Next Game: vs Shirley Boys , kick-off 1.15pm@ Mandeville RHS Rugby is extremely grateful to NZ Community Trust for their recent grant of $4000 towards regulation goal posts for the main rugby field at the school.
