Roman Jiganchine and Aram Arzumanyan tied for first with 6.0 points each, Joe Roback was third. Photos Lions Chess Club Oregon Open (online) (September 5-7) The latest Pacific Northwest tournament to go online was the Oregon Open held in its traditional time slot over the Labour Day weekend. Apart from the regular six-round Swiss at 90 + 30 there were also scholastic, blitz, and bullet events. The field of ninety-four players was topped by a player who has become very familiar in these parts in the last six months, grandmaster Aleksandr Lenderman. He took two half-point byes but won the tournament nevertheless, aided by the other two GMs in the event (Jose Martinez Alcantara and Aleksej Aleksandrov) not completing their schedules. -

Galería de Maestros: Leonid Stein Por el GM Zenón Franco Tras la primera ronda del Torneo Interzonal de 1962, en Estocolmo, Fischer le propuso a Geller jugar partidas rápidas, Geller, que no había tenido un buen día, rehusó y le propuso que se le enfrentara al joven ucraniano que se encontraba a su lado, Fischer no lo conocía, pues no había asistido a la ceremonia de inauguración y ese día aquel joven había quedado libre, y sólo aceptó jugar si el desconocido recibía ventaja, en caso de obtener 2 puntos de 5, Fischer perdía el match, el soviético algo incómodo, aceptó, no estaba bien visto jugar por dinero, aunque fuera una cifra testimonial, pero no quería perder la oportunidad de jugar con Fischer, tras 10 minutos Fischer perdió la primera partida, la segunda la perdió aún más rápidamente, y así, entre las risas de Geller, Fischer conoció a Leonid Zakharovich Stein (1934 -1973). Leonid Stein Una vez granjeado el respeto de Fischer, continuaron jugando en igualdad de términos, frecuentemente durante todo el torneo, el score era variable, sin existir un dominador claro, y comenzó una amistad entre ambos que duraría hasta la muerte de Stein. La trayectoria de Stein está llena de puntos culminantes impresionante, como el ser 3 veces Campeón de la URSS (1963, 1964 y 1966), ganador de los 2 de los torneos más fuertes de los años 60 y 70, como son los torneos en homenaje al 50º aniversario de la Revolución de Octubre, Moscú 1967, (participaron 4 Campeones del Mundo) y el Memorial Alekhine, Moscú 1971 (con la participación de ¡5!
