From Animated Film to Theatrical Spectacle: A Semiotic Analysis of the Scenography and Re-creation of Beauty and the Beast (1994) and The Lion King (1997). It is being submitted for the Degree of Master of Arts (Coursework) in the Faulty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. ___________________________ Kirsten Laura Tait ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank the following people for their support, guidance, advice, assistance and patience: Mervyn McMurtry (my supervisor) Stanley Meyer Walt Disney Theatrical Productions Rowin Munsamy Harriet MacDonald Jenni Tait Larry Tait Judith Tait Jonathan O’Connor iii Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyse the re-creation and transformation of animated films into theatrical spectacles, by examining two Walt Disney animations and productions as case studies: Beauty and the Beast (1991 & 1994) and The Lion King (1994 & 1997), designed by Stanley Meyer (Beauty and the Beast [1994]) and Julie Taymor (The Lion King [1997]), respectively. Through a semiotic analysis of the productions viewed in the Monte-Teatro in Johannesburg (Beauty and the Beast [2007]) and the Lyceum in London (The Lion King [2010]), the scenographic choices of the designers are examined to ascertain the ways in which the re-creation and transformation from animation to theatre occurs.

How "The Lion King" remake is different from the animated version By USA Today, adapted by Newsela staff on 07.29.19 Word Count 854 Level MAX Image 1. Mufasa (left) and Simba in a scene from Disney's animated "The Lion King" which was released in 1994. Photo by: Disney Studios How does Disney tell the story of a lion becoming king in 2019? Well, largely the same way it did in 1994. This time the movie studio is using photorealistic computer-generated imagery (CGI). Jon Favreau's remake of "The Lion King" (in theaters since July 19) brings Simba, Nala, Scar and the whole pride back to the big screen with new voice talent but much of the original plot intact. Fans of the animated classic get those moments they love: Simba's sneeze, the cub's presentation to the kingdom, Timon and Pumbaa's vulture-kicking entrance. Even much of the dialogue is identical to that of the 25-year-old movie. But there are some changes that add a half-hour of running time to the story. Here are a few notable updates, aside from the obvious fact that the animals no longer look like cartoons. Be prepared for a different version of Scar's sinister song, and for new Beyoncé music. This time, Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) doesn't so much croon "Be Prepared" as deliver his signature song like a dark, militaristic monologue. In place of a catchy chorus and humorous digs at hyenas This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com.

This is a short version from the movie. It gives only a small impression of how the movie looks like. I really suggest you, if you didn't did this already, to view the movie ASAP!! Every morning, as the sun peeks over the horizon, a giant rock formation catches the first rays of light. This is Pride Rock, home to Mufasa and his lovely wife, Queen Sarabi. On a particular morning, animals from all the Pride Lands had journeyed to Pride Rock to honor the birth of their newborn cub, Simba. As part of the celebration, Rafiki had a special duty. He cranked open a gourd, dipped his finger inside, and made a mark on Simba's forehead. Then he lifted the future King up high for all to see. The elephants trumpeted with their trunks, the monkeys jumped up and down, and the zebras stamped with their hooves with happiness. Not far from the ceremony, in a cave at the backside of Pride Rock, a scraggly lion with a dark mane grumbled. Life's not fair. I shall never be king. This was Mufasa's brother, Scar, who was jealous of Simba's position as the next King. Moments later, Mufasa was at the doorway to the cave. Sarabi and I didn't see you at the presentation of Simba. Zazu, Mufasa's trusted advisor, also appeared. You should have been first in line. I was first in line until the little hairball was born. And with that, Scar stalked out of the cave. Before long, Simba grew into a healthy, playful young cub.

Meet the Robinsons The List: #100: Pokemon: The Movie 2000 (aka Pocket Monsters The Movie: Revelation Lugia) Year of Release: 1999 (original), 2000 (USA) Director: Kunihiko Yuyama The best of the Pokemon movies, Pokemon 2000 improved on its predecessor in pretty much every conceivable way, from the quality of the animation, to the epic battle in the endgame, to the music and the characters and pretty much everything else. I was very surprised to find out that critics hated it because it really is a quality film. In this film, the villain (Lawrence III in the American dub, Jirarudan in the original) attempts to capture the three legendary birds, which causes weather calamities all over the world. He's capturing them so that the mighty Lugia will emerge to quell the fighting and then he can capture Lugia as well. However, Lugia fails to stop the fighting and that's when Ash comes in, Ash has to gather the legendary treasures together (while avoiding getting killed by the birds and stormy weather) and use them (along with a special musical tune) to quell the birds' rage.

Simba’s life begins in a rocky outcropping of the African plains. His birth is announced in the opening sequence of the movie, which shows all of the animals of the African veld gathering to hail their future king while the cute cub is held aloft from a dramatic spur of rock. The young lion lives with his father Mufasa, the king of the Pride Rock, his mother Sarabi, and members of their extended family. Simba learns from his father that he has a distinct place in the circle of life as the future king.
