A Phenomenological Study of Animals As Cartographic
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE TERRAIN OF THE SELF AND THE OTHER: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF ANIMALS AS CARTOGRAPHIC TEACHERS AND HEALERS Debra L. Goulden, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Francine H. Hultgren, Professor Department of Education Policy and Leadership Using the metaphor of a journey, the phenomenon of companion animal caregiving is opened for appraisal. Companion animals are revealed as metaphoric cartographers or mapmakers, creators of guides of carin g. Through these guides, we are called to care through the task of exploration of the inner terrain of the Self as well as the intimate terrain of the Other. Hermeneutic phenomenology as the mode of inquiry for this study uses the framework of six methodological guidelines described by van Manen (1990). The voices of six nurse educators provide narratives of the lived experiences of being-with a companion animal. These narratives are generated through the use of various texts for examination: conversations, art or photographs, and written life stories. Developed from narratives, significant themes of companion animals are identified. These themes are viewed as the lived language of soul, a felt connection to the Other, an ontological communion or attunemen t that reveals mystery, spirit, and an enhanced awareness. This experience of soul in its essence reveals the terrain of the Self and the Other. These themes of soul become known through the lived existentials of spatiality, corporeality, temporality, and relationality (van Manen, 1990). These intertwined themes are manifested as animal love, generated through deep connections or soul-mates; senses of animal soul by which intimate terrains are revealed through touch, vision, and hearing thereby offering an authentic knowing by the heart of a companion animal; animal courage, the terrain in which we are tended and mended through presence and compassion; and animal havens, a felt terrain of homecoming. -

Six Questions for Jane Mayer, Author of The Dark Side By Scott Horton, HARPER’S, July, 2008 In a series of gripping articles, Jane Mayer has chronicled the Bush Administration’s grim and furtive dealings with torture and has exposed both the individuals within the administration who “made it happen” (a group that starts with Vice President Cheney and his chief of staff, David Addington), the team of psychologists who put together the palette of techniques, and the Fox television program “24,” which was developed to help sell it to the American public. In a new book, The Dark Side, Mayer puts together the major conclusions from her articles and fills in a number of important gaps. Most significantly, we learn the details on the torture techniques and the drama behind the fierce and lingering struggle within the administration over torture, and we learn that many within the administration recognized the potential criminal accountability they faced over these torture tactics and moved frantically to protect themselves from possible future prosecution. I put six questions to Jane Mayer on the subject of her book, The Dark Side. 1. Reports have circulated for some time that the Red Cross examination of the CIA’s highly coercive interrogation regime—what President Bush likes to call “The Program”—concluded that it was “tantamount to torture.” But you write that the Red Cross categorically described the program as “torture.” The Red Cross is notoriously tight-lipped about its reports, and you do not cite your source or even note that you examined the report. Do you believe that the threat of criminal prosecution drove the Bush Administration’s crafting of the Military Commissions Act? Whether anyone involved in the Bush Administration’s interrogation and detention program will be prosecuted is as much a political question as a legal one. -

THE CHRONICLE REVIEW How RightWing Billionaires Infiltrated Higher Education By Jane Mayer FEBRUARY 12, 2016 If there was a single event that galvanized conservative donors to try to wrest control of higher education in America, it might have been the uprising at Cornell University on April 20, 1969. That afternoon, during parents’ weekend at the Ithaca, N.Y., campus, some 80 black students marched in formation out of the student union, which they had seized, with their clenched fists held high in blackpower salutes. To the shock of the genteel Ivy League community, several were brandishing guns. At the head of the formation was a student who called himself the "Minister of Defense" for Cornell’s AfroAmerican Society. Strapped across his chest, Pancho Villastyle, was a sashlike bandolier studded with bullet cartridges. Gripped nonchalantly in his right hand, with its butt resting on his hip, was a glistening rifle. Chin held high and sporting an Afro, goatee, and eyeglasses reminiscent of Malcolm X, he was the face of a drama so infamous it was regarded for years by conservatives such as David Horowitz as "the most disgraceful occurrence in the history of American higher education." John M. Olin, a multimillionaire industrialist, wasn’t there at Cornell, which was his alma mater, that weekend. He was traveling abroad. But as a former Cornell trustee, he could not have gone long without seeing the iconic photograph of the armed protesters. What came to be known as "the Picture" quickly ricocheted around the world, eventually going on to win that year’s Pulitzer Prize. -

So I guess they’re called arcades, but recently I have been hanging out more at some of these barcades popping up lately, they’re basically craft beer and classic arcade machines. Then there’s an arcade out in Brookfield called the Galloping Ghost Arcade, and I’ve been there a lot because I’ve been shooting my documentary there. I believe it’s actually the largest arcade in the world, I think they have over 400 arcade machines there. -

I like to start these virtual sessions with recovery stories where they give us hope. In March of 1995, I was giving a speech in Downers Grove, Illinois. That's a suburb just west of Chicago. And there was a woman sitting in the front row-- African-American woman sitting in the front row center aisle seat who asked if I was the same Mark Sanders who worked at a detox center in 1985 a decade earlier. I said, yeah, that's me. She said, I was a patient on the detox unit. You were my counselor. I don't always remember names, but I remember stories and faces. So here's her story. She was addicted to cocaine and heroin, and she supported her drug habit through prostitution. In fact, she sold her body not too far from our detox facility. And some evenings, as I was driving home, I'd see her standing on the corner. She left detox and went back to selling her body. She looked really bad to me. You know how when a person stops-- starts using drugs, they stop eating, they lose a lot of weight. So I remember looking at her some evening and saying to myself as I was driving, well, she looks really bad. I don't think she'll ever recover. Am I the only one listening to the sound of my voice who's ever worked with a client that you thought would never recover? See, that's why I'm convinced that computers will never be able to do your job. -

Rock Music in Video Games
These three very different video games illustrate some of the many ways rock music has been incorporated into ROCK MUSIC recent video games. In the early days of video games, technological limitations prevented the use of prerecorded music: games simply didn’t have the necessary memory IN VIDEO space to store it, and consoles or computers didn’t have the hardware capabilities to play it back. But now, in the era of DVD and Blu-Ray discs, massive hard drives, and GAMES cloud computing, the amount and sound quality of game music is virtually unlimited.
