Hindu Deities Common Hindu Deities There are many gods, or deities, represented in Hindu ideology. The gods are often portrayed with many arms and multiple heads. The reason for this is because Hindus believe that the gods are everywhere and they do things at the same time. These portrayals of the gods appeared in India more than 2000 years ago. Brahama speaks the world into existence “creates” Shiva has many personalities. Divine ascetic, lives in Himalayas, carries trident, ascetic’s water gourd & other things. • Patron god of dancers & musicians • Has a domestic side • Mahadeva “Great god” • Nataraja “Lord of the Dance” Vishnu or Narayan • Carries a discus, a mace, and a conch (military devices) • Sustains life in the universe during periods of time in which the world comes in & out of time periodically. • Idea of incarnation—the divine takes human form. Vishnu has many incarnations. Any time the world is in danger, Vishnu intervenes to save it by taking on the necessary human form. Rama is a blue god with a bow & arrow. He saves the world and has adventures. There are many stories about Rama that are told in the Ramayana stories, some of which see Rama as disruptive deity and people try to avoid him. Krishna Avatara • Krishna as divine child (butter baby) • Krishna as symbol of divine lover • Krishna as Sage‐Hero of Mahabharata, 2nd great Hindu epic DEVI: goddess ‐‐ Bodily connection to trees causing it to bloom • Incarnations as personifications of woman’s virtue Lakshmi: goddess of wealth Sarasvati: goddess of learning and arts; married to Brahma Women’s dharma is to submit to men; male domination. In art, male gods are shown above and standing out from the female goddesses, which are dimmer & in the background. Durga and Kali: Incarnation of feminine power (Shakti) • Durga is married to Shiva • Kali forces us to look at death directly & become in harmony with death • The theology of Kali helps to re‐center the harmony between male & female power .

Professor Pati’s photographs document specific places but also reflect a creative eye at work; as an artist, his documents are also celebrations of the particular spaces that inspire him and capture his imagination. Accompanying the images in the exhibition are beautiful textiles and objects of metalware that transform the gallery into its own sacred space, with respectful and reverent viewing becoming its own ritual that could lead to a fuller understanding of the concepts Pati brings to our attention.     Venkateswaran 1 Devi: An Exploration of Hindu Goddess Iconography Evyn Venkateswaran ‘Devi’ is a collection of illustrations that emphasize the unifying feminine power in Hinduism, commonly known as shakti. Portrayed within are several deities that have unique ​ ​ stories and corporeal forms, re-contextualized through a modern lens. The ways in which I have achieved this is through my depiction of each of the goddesses, featuring a separate culture or ethnicity found within the Indian Subcontinent. This challenges the current market of Hindu illustrations where all goddesses share the same facial-features, skin-tone, and clothing. In addition, each of the artworks contain compositions that are unique and break away from the typical forward-facing, subject gazing directly at the audience compositions found in the aforementioned illustrations. Lastly, when creating my illustrations, I strove to capture a story or a meaning that would distinguish the identity of that specific deity. Initially, the technique in which I completed this project was through using either oil pastels or nupastels, later adding a layer of digital paint with Photoshop. However, due to different situational changes, I have finished my last images utilizing Procreate on my iPad Pro. With both situations, I focused on impressionistic mark-making, using several colors to create an iridescent quality in each of the pieces. Within my color palettes, I used golden-yellow in each of the pieces to draw significance between the goddesses, for example using the most amount of gold in Durga to emphasize how she’s the ultimate ​ ​ form of shakti. ​ My intent of displaying these images is through posters that can either be used as iconography within worship or hung up as decoration.

    CATHOLIC SHRINES IN CHENNAI, INDIA: THE POLITICS OF RENEWAL AND APOSTOLIC LEGACY BY THOMAS CHARLES NAGY A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Victoria University of Wellington (2014) Abstract This thesis investigates the phenomenon of Catholic renewal in India by focussing on various Roman Catholic churches and shrines located in Chennai, a large city in South India where activities concerning saintal revival and shrinal development have taken place in the recent past. The thesis tracks the changing local significance of St. Thomas the Apostle, who according to local legend, was martyred and buried in Chennai. In particular, it details the efforts of the Church hierarchy in Chennai to bring about a revival of devotion to St. Thomas. In doing this, it covers a wide range of issues pertinent to the study of contemporary Indian Christianity, such as Indian Catholic identity, Indian Christian indigeneity and Hindu nationalism, as well as the marketing of St. Thomas and Catholicism within South India. The thesis argues that the Roman Catholic renewal and ―revival‖ of St. Thomas in Chennai is largely a Church-driven hierarchal movement that was specifically initiated for the purpose of Catholic evangelization and missionization in India.
