When Jesus heard of the death of , he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” [Jesus] said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over- twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once [Jesus] spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. 4 2. EXPLORE IT!

Previously in Matthew Chapter 8, there was a story that is similar to today’s Gospel, but this time their roles are reversed. When Jesus calms the storm and the seas in the earlier gospel, the disciples do not show fear until Jesus has walked on the water towards them. However, in today’s Gospel, Jesus does not calm the storm or the seas, but it is the sight of Jesus that they fear. Jesus calms their fears and tells them to be not afraid. As Peter seeks to come to Jesus, he steps out of the boat and walks on water towards Jesus. However, when Peter focuses on the strength of the storm, he began to sink. It is then that Jesus saves Peter and both arrive in the boat.

5 Jesus Praises the Canaanite Woman’s Faith

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is? They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. 9 The Conditions of Jesus’ Discipleship

WEEK A-22 MATTHEW 16:21-27

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. 3. CONNECT IT!

Jesus is teaching us about forgiveness. To ask for forgiveness for ourselves, we must also forgive others. WEEK A - 25 Matthew 20:1-16

Jesus told his disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’

When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? God will look upon people of all nations, and He will separate them as a shepherd separates sheep and goats upon their return from the pasture. The Son of Man will judge all people on how they treated others and whether they carried out acts of mercy to the least fortunate among them—the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the ill, and the imprisoned. Indeed, Jesus, who suffered on the Cross, identifies Himself with the least ones.

Recall the parable of the talents, which taught us that the gifts God gave us are so that we can be of service to others, especially the least among us. God will judge us not only on how we have used these gifts and talents, but also on how we have extended ourselves in service to those most unfortunate in our communities. Indeed, Jesus tells us that whenever we have served the least fortunate, we have served Christ himself.

Jesus is the Good News

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.’” John [the] Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Following Jewish law and tradition, Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem. Two special people, Simeon and Anna, were also at the temple that day. They were both very devout and faithful to God. The Holy Spirit had already revealed to Simeon that he would meet the Christ before his death. So when the Holy Spirit urged Simeon to go to the temple that day, he recognized Jesus as the Christ as he held the baby in his arms. Anna was a very old prophetess that never left the temple, and also came to recognize Jesus and spoke about Him as the Savior to all those around.

Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

46 It was prophesized that the Christ, also known as the Messiah or the King of the Jews, would one day come to lead Israel. Among the people waiting for his arrival were the magi, who studied the stars. When they saw signs that Jesus was born, they made the long journey to Bethlehem to honor the newborn king. King Herod felt threatened when he heard that another “king” was born and tried to learn more. The magi followed a star until they found the baby Jesus and his mother Mary. They presented him with expensive gifts fit for a king: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
