Macdonald (University of Oxford) Abstract Literacy was widespread in large areas of ancient Arabia, as shown by the huge numbers of graffiti by both settled people and nomads. But, it isstill extremely difficult to establish a reliable chronology for the literate periods of pre-Islamic Arabian history. This has led to a misuse of palaeography in an attempt to create chronological sequences based on letter forms from undated inscriptions and documents, on widely different kinds of surface, with different purposes, and often separated by large distances. This prac- tice is not confined to Arabian inscriptions but is widespread in Semitic epigraphy. -

Stokes (University of Texas at Austin) Abstract This article is an edition of an inscription in a variety of Thamudic that contains several glyph shapes that have not been found together in the same inscription, and are typical of inscriptions from central and southern Arabia. Interesting glyph shapes include the glyph shapes for ʾ, w, and g. A personal name formed on a morphologically H-Causative verb, familiar from the South Arabian, as well as Dadanitic inscriptions, is attested in this inscription. The formula found in the inscription is paralleled most closely by those typical of Thamudic C inscriptions. Finally, the article discusses the implications of the combination of these features, typically associated with different scripts and geographic distribution, for the field of ANA epigraphy. -

chapter 16 Ancient North Arabian m. c. a. macdonald 1. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS In the western two-thirds of the Arabian Peninsula, from southern Syria to Yemen, in- scriptions testify to the use of a number of different ancient languages and scripts. In the southwest, these inscriptions may date from as early as the thirteenth century BC and con- tinue up to the seventh century AD, while in central and north Arabia they seem to be concentrated in the period between the eighth century BC and the fourth century AD. Some languages, like Aramaic and, later, Greek, came to the region from outside, but the rest were indigenous tongues expressed in scripts developed locally. Literacy seems to have been extraordinarily widespread, not only among the settled pop- ulations but also among the nomads. Indeed, the scores of thousands of graffiti on the rocks of the Syro-Arabian desert suggest that it must have been almost universal among the latter (see Macdonald 1993:382–388). By the Roman period, it is probable that a higher propor- tion of the population in this region was functionally literate than in any other area of the ancient world. 1.1 North Arabian The ancient languages in the southwest of the Peninsula are known as Ancient (or Old) South Arabian (see Ch. 15), while those in central and northern Arabia and in the desert of southern Syriaare classed as North Arabian. This latter category is divided into two subgroups. The first of these is Arabic,which is subdivided into (i) Old Arabic (that is Arabic attested in pre-Islamic texts which have survived independently of the early Arab grammarians, thus the Namarah¯ inscription but not the “Pre-Islamic poetry,” see Macdonald, forthcoming); (ii) Classical and Middle Arabic; and (iii) the vernacular dialects. -

Fokelien Kootstra Leiden University [email protected] Abstract This article will discuss the dating formula in the Dadanitic inscriptions. So far, some of these have been interpreted to refer not only to the reign of the local king (mlk lḥyn), but also to another political official called rʾy.The article will discuss the merit of this interpretation based on both the ques- tionable etymology of the term rʾy and the problematic interpretation of the terms following this word as personal names. Instead, a new interpretation of this formula as a reference to a local calendar will be explored in light of the occurrence of a similar word rʾy in Safaitic dating formula, and comparison to other ancient methods of time reckoning in the region. Introduction Dadanitic is the name of the script used to carve inscriptions attested in and around the ancient oasis of Dadān, modern-day al-ʿUlā, in the north-west of the Arabian Peninsula.1 Just under 2,000 Dadanitic inscriptions are known so far, about 1,500 of which are informal graffiti.2 It is generally assumed that these inscriptions were carved between the sixth and first centuries BCE.The exact dating of the inscriptions is problematic, however, and mostly based on out- side references to Dadān (see Rohmer and Charloux 2015 for the most recent overview and discussion of the evidence for dating the inscriptions). -

ISSN 1065-9366 (print), 2168-3158 (online) Abstract Wellington and Potter offer their own reconstruction of Lehi’s journey through the Arabian Peninsula as recorded in the Book of Mormon. After stressing the necessity of following the frankincense trail in order to obtain enough reliable water and food, the authors show that a branch of this trail does indeed skirt close to a good candidate for the Valley of Lemuel. Using an Arabic derivation for the meaning of Shazer meaning “a valley of area abounding with trees and shrubs,” they locate a lush oasis valley along the trail that would provide a natural resting place for Lehi’s party. -

Pre-Islamic Arabia 1 Pre-Islamic Arabia Pre-Islamic Arabia refers to the Arabic civilization which existed in the Arabian Plate before the rise of Islam in the 630s. The study of Pre-Islamic Arabia is important to Islamic studies as it provides the context for the development of Islam. Studies The scientific studies of Pre-Islamic Arabs starts with the Arabists of the early 19th century when they managed to decipher epigraphic Old South Arabian (10th century BCE), Ancient North Arabian (6th century BCE) and other writings of pre-Islamic Arabia, so it is no longer limited to the written traditions which are not local due to the lack of surviving Arab historians Nabataean trade routes in Pre-Islamic Arabia accounts of that era, so it is compensated by existing material consists primarily of written sources from other traditions (such as Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, etc.) so it was not known in great detail; From the 3rd century CE, Arabian history becomes more tangible with the rise of the Himyarite Kingdom, and with the appearance of the Qahtanites in the Levant and the gradual assimilation of the Nabataeans by the Qahtanites in the early centuries CE, a pattern of expansion exceeded in the explosive Muslim conquests of the 7th century. So sources of history includes archaeological evidence, foreign accounts and oral traditions later recorded by Islamic scholars especially pre-Islamic poems and al-hadith plus a number of ancient Arab documents that survived to the medieval times and portions of them were cited or recorded. Archaeological exploration in the Arabian Peninsula has been sparse but fruitful, many ancient sites were identified by modern excavations.
